I have had mix feelings for En Casa. A few years ago, it was the "go-to" Spanish tapas place in the city amongst our friends. However, we stopped going for a while after we had two rather disappointing visits in a year. We gave it another chance this year for my sister's birthday, and I was pleasantly surprised at the food quality. Unfortunately, service was a bit lacking. Nevertheless, in all fairness, the staff were all pretty friendly when they actually noticed/remembered us.

I liked the place a lot from a previous visit so i am excited to come back. Service was slow but luckily the food held the standards. I had the flatbread and the zucchini flower. Yum! From what i remembered, the mushrooms, patatas, and grilled octopus were all delicious! Had a glass of their malbec too but i'd stick to their sangria next time.

Truth is I visit this place at least once a year because its in the Entertainment Book and even though I can't justify buying the book, at least one of my friends has a copy of it and this one always get used. Hey if you use the voucher you can use the savings to buy more sangria! Ole! When I come here I order the tapas dishes, never a main because it lets you sample a greater range of dishes and share with friends. My favourites and ones which I love to have all to myself if I was allowed, are the garlic mushrooms & prawns (the garlic is strong yet so good!) and the chorizo. Other tapas that we usually order are the beef meatballs, patatas bravas (potatoes with garlic mayonnaise and spicy tomato salsa) and then a pizza. This is probably one of my favourite Spanish places in Sydney due to the food. In terms of atmosphere its quite dark and it get a bit stuffy and noisy. For atmosphere I would rather go to Spanish Tapas in Glebe but the food is not as good.

This was a favoured location for end of semester parties with my university Spanish classes. Located at the Haymarket end of Sydney's half-baked Spanish Quarter, Encasa (meaning "at home") is a great place to head with groups to take advantage of their banquet paella menus and easy to share sangria jugs. The atmosphere is warm and cosy, with latino-lookng wait staff surveying the floor amidst brick archways, yellow walls and simple timber tables that evoke summertime villas. They serve a range of the expected tapas, like king prawns with garlic and chilli oil, marinated white anchovies with a side of toasted bread and grilled baby octopus. Their set menus are available for crews of eight or more guests. We usually went for number four, a combination of tapas to start followed by seafood and meat paellas for a pretty decent $39 per person. To drink, order up big on their pitchers of 'white sangria' - a refreshing take on the usual red wine cocktail, made with prosecco, sliced apple and orange and spices.

The food, staff, and atmosphere here do not disappoint. It does get LOUD, though...very loud. Came here and tried the Canary Islands special as well as the banquet menu on a separate occassion and both visits were a great experience. The white sangria was to die for and defintely couldn't go back to drink the red one after we tried the white.

Exactly what it looks like - delicious shrimp, broccoli and pasta.

That said, for such a tiny space the selection of imported and gourmet goods is incredible. I know I can always stop by to grab some quality fruit and veg, and the brands stocked are more small batch varieties compared to what you'll find at mainstream supermarkets. This is a great place to pop into for picnic goods before heading down to Bradfield Park by the harbour - in the fridge you'll find Yulla dips and mini dessert pots (the vanilla yoghurt and chocolate mousse combo is a personal fave), Nudie smoothies and organic soft drinks; behind the deli counter, a solid selection of olives and cured meats that they'll slice to order for you; and they have a rotating selection of homemade-looking cakes and tarts. By the bread loaves you'll find kourabiethes (those little Greek crescent shaped cookies covered in icing sugar) and triangles of baklava packaged in pairs, which offers a great easy and cheap dessert option for two.
