I was a bridesmaid at a wedding at Quartz Hill Estates, and unfortunately, what should have been a beautiful experience was overshadowed by poor preparation, maintenance, communication, and execution.
The property is beautiful, and the rustic foothill backdrop is clearly part of its appeal. With a property like this, it is reasonable to expect dust, occasional rodents, and other natural elements. That is not the issue. The issue was the lack of preventative maintenance and preparation.
The house provided for the bridal party was especially concerning. The bathroom sink was severely rusted, was not properly attached to the wall, and leaked badly. A bucket had been left underneath and had to be emptied frequently, including while we were already dressed in our bridesmaid dresses preparing for the ceremony.
The house also had what appeared to be a significant mouse infestation. Droppings were found along walls, thresholds, counters, inside cabinets, on beds, inside the tub, and inside the sink. It was difficult to believe the house had received a proper cleaning, walkthrough, or inspection before our arrival.
There were also numerous issues with the wedding setup. Details that had been specifically selected and planned beforehand were incorrect or not executed:
Planned tablescapes were not set out.
Reception draping was incorrect.
Chairs were incorrect.
Cushions were incorrect.
Real candles were specified, but battery-operated candles were used.
Centerpieces were completely different.
Napkins, plates, and chargers were different from what was selected.
The ceremony aisle was supposed to be lined with flowers, but each row had only one or two stems at the end.
The grass areas where guests were expected to walk and mingle were not properly mowed, and there were numerous holes throughout the grounds. This is not only unattractive but potentially a safety concern for elderly or disabled guests.
The bride's bouquet also contained flowers that were already browning. While some natural variation is understandable, this should have been caught before the wedding. The issue was corrected only after we noticed during photos and we saw other flowers being brought past the window and ran to stop them. Had we not noticed, it would have not been fixed.
The MC/DJ did a good job keeping the energy going, but it was unexpected to have him randomly singing throughout the reception, which was not part of what we anticipated.
These are only the issues I personally witnessed, among many others.
It is extremely upsetting to pay thousands of dollars for a wedding venue and have so many agreed-upon details either changed, substituted, or simply not executed. Mistakes happen, and unforeseen circumstances happen. What matters is being transparent about them beforehand and making a genuine effort to correct problems.
Unfortunately, the experience after the wedding was just as disappointing. The bride made multiple attempts to contact the venue, discuss the issues, review the contract, and reach a reasonable resolution. She has also emailed. To date, no resolution has been reached, and Jess has avoided addressing her concerns.
A venue does not have to be perfect. But when couples spend thousands of dollars on one of the most important days of their lives, they deserve honest communication, attention to detail, accountability, and an effort to deliver what was promised.
I consider myself an honest person who tries to do right by others, and I respect businesses that do the same. Unfortunately, this experience did not reflect that.
Beautiful scenery cannot make up for inadequate preparation, poor maintenance, failure to execute agreed-upon details, and a lack of accountability afterward. This was disappointing and, in my opinion, bad business.
