I will try…read moreand be as brief as possible in restating my encounter with Mikeal Ostrander, the owner/optometrist. It's been awhile, but I will never forget the horrible treatment I received here. It left an impression. I had an eye appointment and immediately upon entering the office, I presented my insurance card and a copy of my eyeglass coverage. They appeared to make copies of those items. I assumed (incorrectly) that they would run things through my insurance. When choosing glasses, I presented the insurance coverage document to that person as well. She assured me that if I had coverage and their office was paid again, they would reimburse me for what I was paying out of pocket that day. When I found out they didn't submit the items to insurance, I asked them to pay the amount insurance would have covered, had they done what they were supposed to do in the first place. I was told they weren't required to submit to my insurance. Then why take my insurance documents and make copies? What's the point, if you're not submitting it to insurance? The optometrist/owner didn't care about the fact that his staff dropped the ball on their end. He was extremely unpleasant and unreasonable in working with me to fix the situation they caused. Countless unpleasant interactions later, the owner/optometrist would not reimburse me for the $75ish they were supposed to repay me. They were standing by their mistake. I now go to a different eye doctor in Hayward (Northview). The staff actually look up your benefits and tell you specifically what is covered. They are wonderful to deal with. REPLY TO "TIM F's" COMMENT: Ironic that Tim F. was not involved in this dispute but you're writing using his name. You are not Tim F. Yet another questionable business practice. My original review, under my name, was up for the majority of the last few years. It recently disappeared and not because of some fake name. I had watched it through the years and it had been read by many, many people. You could learn a lot from Northview Eye Clinic. I walked in, presented the same information I provided to your staff, and by the time my exam was done, they told me exactly what I would be paying for glasses out of pocket and what my insurance would cover. It went off without a hitch, as it should. I didn't mention this in my first review, because I didn't know at the time, but the prescription you gave me for distance was not correct. I wondered why I couldn't wear those glasses without getting a headache. Now I know. It was off by quite a lot. Northview fixed that as well. Bottom line, I presented all my insurance information to your staff, and you didn't run it or tell me you wouldn't run it. Eventually, my insurance did get involved at MY prompting. I reported you to the State of Wisconsin as well. Insurance said you could run it through correctly and then they could cover it. You refused. You should have done the right thing and chose not to. You still would have gotten your money from my insurance company. You dug in your heels and chose not to run the claim correctly. All I can do is inform others of the truth, which hasn't changed since it happened years ago. I had sincerely hoped you would have learned by now that treating the public the way you treated me, is not good for business. Sadly, it seems you haven't. Also, replying to my review with outright lies doesn't boost your credibility with anyone. You messed up. We all do, but you need to admit it and move on.

10-year-old me would have loved this shop. When I was young I went through a rock phase -- as do we…read moreall, I'm sure. I had my rock collection, kept in an army green tackle box, which included pretty gems and stones bought at stores and others I found that I thought just looked pretty. I know what you're thinking: Yes, I was one of the popular kids in school. ;-P Anyway, decades later, I still get a bit giddy when I come across tiny boxes with miniature cards in them with the scientific name of a newly polished rock originally found in nature. Hematite's pretty tight, amiright? So I was excited to stumble upon Jack Pine Rock Shop while on vacation in Hayward. This shop packs lots to look at in a small space. It has the boxes with different stones and crystals classified, along with the woo-woo mystical traits they supposedly possess. It also has some more artistic and carved pieces in glass cases to gaze upon. There were some marble items that would look pretty on a bookshelf or table as a statement piece. The prices seemed to range from inexpensive to luxury. It was fun to peruse it all, and I hope my son is as totally cool as I was when he grows up and that I can take him here to get a few rocks for his special collection.

The Jack Pine Rock Shop offers a really nice variety -- from rough stones that are just a dollar or two to large, expensive polished rocks and other pieces (most recently I had to stop myself from buying a $300 lazy susan made of the most beautiful marble). There's lots to touch and talk about, which makes it a great stop for kids. And the staff is extremely welcoming and knowledgeable. They always indulge our family with advice, tidbits and a wealth of information about their products. This is a must-stop place for our family each summer when we visit Hayward. Though I rarely buy anything, many of my family members look forward to bringing home a little gem from the rock shop each year. One other thing to note: they do an extremely good job wrapping the items you buy -- something essential to getting them home in one piece and definitely not to be overlooked.

Their address doesn't load right in Google Maps, but that isn't their fault. The receptionist was cordial and friendly. The optometrist saw me quickly and did a thorough, competent job finding my new eyeglass prescription. We were both happy with the results of my exam. The appointment quickly devolved from there when I was directed to the opthamologist. When he came into the exam room I thought he was possibly another patient or maybe a janitor. No professional demeanor or clothing. He looked to be about the same age as Dr. Doogie Houser. He was thoroughly confused by my prescription and made several ridiculous suggestions like, "Just go to the grocery store and get some reading glasses". I've been wearing prescription glasses for about 14 years. My last optometrist suggested that it was almost time to switch to bi-focals. This clown thinks that I can wear the same over the counter prescription in both eyes even though my right eye sees almost perfectly. I tried to explain this to the doctor but he has the bedside manner of an engineer. I've never had a harsh word towards a doctor, nurse, optometrist, or anyone else in the health care field in my life and this guy really made me angry. In the end he wouldn't give me the prescription because he wasn't "comfortable" giving it to me. UN.B.LIEV.ABLE.
