I literally had the entire state park to myself yesterday, Tuesday, in the middle of summer. I was…read morehiking and there were no other cars there. The night before it was me and one other camper in 10 sites. We have 10 walk in tent sites. You need a reservation. It's $15 a night for up to six people per campsite. There's a picnic table in a fire at each site. There are pit toilets. There is no electricity anywhere in the park including no lights even in the parking lot. It's awesome. Great to see the night sky. On the east side of the park there is a picnic pavilion and several picnic tables with a charcoal grill On rainbow lake. Straight Lake has a boat access so does rainbow lake, but you have to carry the boat from the parking lot. Non-motorized boats only Like canoes and kayaks. Several miles of singletrack hiking trails as well as the Ice Age national scenic Trail which transects the park. I had trouble finding firewood in the area so I could not have a campfire. You're supposed to bring it in from only 10 miles away and the gas station in Frederick and Luck did not have any and I didn't see any roadside stand selling wood. I booked Tom Boley last summer for a half day guide with my son. I called the week before to…read moreconfirm and all was good. I wanted to make sure he was meeting us at the resort so I called 2 days before our trip to confirm that but he never answered. I left a voice mail but it wasn't returned. I tried again the next day and the day of the planned trip, nothing. I asked the resort owner and he said that Tom should pick us up at the resort, as they normally do. Well, needless to say, he never showed. This guy is a joke and I'd never try to hire him again. I talked about the problem at 2 different resorts, just this weekend (May 2016), and they both said they don't recommend him anymore because not showing up seems to be his thing, they've had heard the same complaint from a bunch of people. I don't know how this guy stays in business but he's extremely unprofessional and a real jerk for not even calling to say he couldn't make it. If you need a guide, try Dan Seibert, Deano, Ty Sennett or a couple others but pass on Tom Boley.

Currently the visitors center is closed for the season but the trails are still accessible. We did the glacial potholes trails which was full of rock climbers. Great views of the St Croix River. Probably spent 15-20 minutes at this trail. Then we did the Walter F Mondale trail till we decided to turn back. Lots of nature to see including hawks, robins, chipmunks, squirrels, etc. Lots of great photo ops too! Probably spent 30-45 minutes on this one. Also they have port a potty's at the parking lot which is helpful while the restrooms are closed for the season.

You can rent pontoons and fishing boats directly from the resort and prices are comparable to other local suppliers. The fact that they're onsite and convenient just adds to the value. You can even buy live bait onsite if you need it. We enjoyed seeing some of the wildlife in the area as well. Pheasants stroll the grounds and eagles are common along the southwest side of the lake. The flower garden is beautiful and has a path going through it so you can get a better view. Prices for cottage rental were either comparable or better than the other resorts nearby. And the staff is really friendly and helpful. An all around great experience and we already plan on coming back next year.

You don't really want to touch anything. You cannot lock the toilette stalls and the doors just swing open. This goes for both the mens and women's bath rooms, I guess the only thing good about it, is that its free.

There is also a picnic shelter with tables under it, nice hiking trails and a restroom facility. It is very picturesque and touts a bat hibernaculum to beautiful scenery. I would suggest bringing and putting on some bug spray when you visit here. The bugs were feasting on me. The Kettle River is easily accessible from this park. They have a boat launch there that you can set off on your kayak excursion. Robinson Park is an all-season park that offers ice and mixed climbing in the winter and sports climbing and bouldering the other times of year. The park has hiking and some small camp sites that can be reserved that have campfires and picnic tables. There is also some benches that you can sit on that overlook the river. The park does not have a playground area, any green space, basketball or tennis courts, but is still a decent spot. It is a decent park, especially for you adventurous types. It is well off of the beaten path and is a very peaceful spot. It is well maintained and does not get much traffic. I enjoyed my time there and hope to make it back there soon.
