Closed on wine and chocolate weekend?!? Seriously!! Don't add your winery to the list of participating wineries and make people drive all the way to your winery to find a "closed" sign! Definitely will not return to taste this wine any other time due to this experience. Multiple drivers/cars were also there making u-turns due to the winery being closed. read more

Okay now if your in the area this place is a must stop if you like sweet wines they also have there red moscato for purchase at Bevmo but if you get the chance to make it to there tasting room you must get a wine slushy!!! Super tasty and perfect for this valley heat i recommend this winery to everyone and supper friendly staff read more

Headed up north for the heck of it, about a year ago I wanted to try this wine country out which I finally did. This winery stood out the most for me. I ended up going to 4 other wineries this was my second winery out of 5 Took home 2 bottles and an olive oil Give this winery 10/10 If I come pared this whole area to Temecula valley I would say these wineries beat Temecula. Had a great time here with a group of friends. Michael, our pourer (?), was incredible! He really made it a fun experience. He gave us each a sheet of paper to follow along with what he was pouring and went over the qualities of each wine. They make all sweet wines, which we all loved. I believe we tried 7 wines and best of all there was no cost for the tasting. After we tasted all the wines Michael made us wine slushies that were great. To top it all off he served us vanilla ice cream with a chocolate wine sauce that was INCREDIBLE!!! Quady is my new favorite winery! read more

Great spot to have dessert and aperitif wines. Wines were great, they even had slushies and spritzers on hand. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable, especially Melissa who was very attentive and polite. We had a great time and will come back for more, with more people! read more

If Fäsi Estate Winery, with its Argentinian Malbecs, organic Syrahs, and Sierra Foothills white Rhone blends, represents something of the innovative, outer edge of the Madera Wine Trail, then Quady is the dependable heart and soul of the place: a real center for what winemaking in this part of central California has long been about. The Quadys are port, sherry, and vermouth specialists with a very profitable line of sweet Moscato wines - red and white - that moves a lot of inventory and enables the winemakers to craft several excellent higher-end bottlings ($20-30 range) in the process that are much more time- and cost-intensive to produce. These delicious wines are generally aged for 3-5 years at the winery and released periodically in numbered lots. The amontillado-style sherry, called "Palomino Fino" is made with biodynamically grown grapes and truly has distinctive character. It's a California classic, as is Quady's "Batch 88 Starboard," a blended port wine using Madera estate grapes that mimic the Portuguese style but give it a uniquely Madera touch. We loved both. The Red Electra - a 5% alcohol slightly fizzy blend of Orange and Black Muscat fermented cold to preserve a fair bit of residual sugar before an early bottling, is a great summertime sipper and deserves a taste, even if you're a more discerning wine drinking type who generally prefers drier or more weighty wines. Part of the coolness of a visit to Quady is how up-close and personal you can get to the winemaking operations. The tasting room is housed inside the winery, which has bottling lines, packing rooms, fermentation vats,and barrel storage facilities that you can probably get permission to visit, if your pourer isn't too occupied behind the counter. The winery building was designed by a prominent San Francisco architect who garnered critical praise for the structure. It's beautiful in a Bauhaus sort of way: vaulted ceilings, wood suspension, rose-colored poured concrete: a Wal-Mart warehouse this definitely is not! The opening hours at Quady basically follow the working hours of the winery, so Quady is a perfect stop during the week, even before 10 am, if you're passing through the Madera area en route to other destinations. We visited on a Monday around 11 am, got an impromptu tour, and left with bottles of port, sherry, and a chilled Red Electra, which we kept very cold in a Yeti cooler until reaching our campsite in the Sequoia National Forest. And believe you me: that bottle hit the spot after a long drive in 100 degree heat! Should you have plans to visit southern Oregon - the Medford area - you can also visit Quady North in nearby Jacksonville, overseen by the son of the founder, where similar unlikely wine tasting adventure surely awaits. Unless you're a Madera local, a visit to Quady will seem a little different from the typical California wine country experience, if by "typical" you mean something like Sonoma, Santa Barbara, or Napa. A lot of the grapes grown in this area are destined for inexpensive jug wine (Mission Bell is just down the street), so Quady is really a bit of an eccentric outlier. Visiting Quady is a chance to take a small risk and indulge your experimental side, to see what wines really do well in this part of the state and how, with luck, skill, and persistence, you can create some very distinctive wines that reward the adventurous at heart who don't shy away from sweet and fortified styles. And by all means give Palomino Fino a try! It's made in traditional Spanish sherry style in very small production (ca. 85 cases/year) and truly a great partnership between the wine grower and the wine maker. It's worth the effort to come out here, and if you happen to pick up a sweet Moscato or vintage port along the way: so be it. With a quirky-sounding name like "Quady," you just know that strange (and wonderful) things are in store for you, if you open your taste buds up to the possibility of a new, palate-pleasing sensation. This is my favorite winery not just for the wine but the customer service I always feel like I'm on "cheers" they all know me when I walk in. When we first started coming it was Jesicca and Melissa the two sisters then they had the guy to filled in before they got the new girl they have now. Five stars, hands down. Visited the tasting room today and was so pleasantly surprised. The wines are delicious, the guys working were fun, knowledgable, passionate, and GENEROUS with their free tastings! ;) I've been obsessed with Quady wines for awhile (select varieties are sold at Bevmo and various other shops), and am so glad I finally got to visit the winery. It's a lovely space, too, and is currently under expansion. Overall, this was a wonderful experience and I can't wait to feature Quady wines at my wedding in 2016. read more

Slushees were great! But customer service was definitely lacking. Full disclosure: we did get there 10 mins before closing on a Sat., but this was our first time on the trail; we hadn't anticipated for the wineries to be so far apart. The lady probs in her 20s with short brown hair was pretty rude to us. She made some back handed comments to us about next time being better with time management and just treating us like we were an inconvenience to her. Well... that's just a bummer because we were really looking forward to this place. I think it would have been better just to say sorry we're closed. We def. apologize about being late but, we wouldn't have stepped inside had there not been like 10 cars in the parking lot so we'd thought we'd try our luck to see if the place was still open. She didn't even pour one of our cups all the way and still charged $4 each. Sad to say we won't be returning to do an actual tasting. read more

History

Established in 1977.

The Quadys left crowded southern California to pursue their dream: a non-urban way of life making wine. Andrew graduated with a Masters in Enology from UC Davis. In 1977, the Quadys settled in Madera in California's Central Valley, where they built a small winery behind their country home and made port on evenings and weekends. Quady Winery continues to produce exciting dessert wines, including Essensia, Elysium and Electra.

Meet the Business Owner: Andrew Q.

Andrew and Laurel Quady left crowded southern California and their jobs in pyrotechnics and merchandising to pursue their dream: a non-urban way of life making wine. Returning to school, Andrew graduated with a Masters in Food Science-Enology from UC Davis and Laurel became a licensed CPA. In 1975, at the urging of friend Darrell Corti, they made their first port from Amador County Zinfandel at the now defunct Lodi Vintners where Andrew was working as an assistant winemaker. In 1977, settled in Madera in California's Central Valley with Andrew working at Heublein, they built a small winery behind their country home and made port on evenings and weekends.

I'm not a big wine fan so usually I'll do the slurp thing to taste the notes or take a sip or two and then pass my glass off to my husband, rather than dumping it. I've been to umpteen wineries around California, the US and internationally. This winery gives, hands down, the stingiest pours I've ever experienced. I could maybe get two sips out of a pour. And yet this tasting was $15 for 4 wines, but if you're a party of 6 or more, the fee for the same tasting goes up to $20 per person! Since when does pouring maybe a half ounce into more glasses warrant everyone in the party being charged $5 more bucks a piece? It feels stingy. I went to 4 wineries in the same weekend I visited Crū. J. Lohr in Paso charges $20 per person for 6 generous pours and a free pencil with herb seeds to plant at home. Eberle Winery in Paso does free tastings and yet have generous pours, free bottled water and a free tour of the underground storage facility. Quady in Madera charges $5 per person for a tasting and not only were the pours generous, we tried 7 wines, got to double back on our favorites before we ordered a half case. The server was nice and personable. I have no complaints about her. Overall it doesn't feel like a fun wine tasting experience when it seems like they're rationing their wine. While not the end of the world, there isn't much of a view for the outdoor patio because the tasting room patio is between the building and a fence with a road on the other side. If you're wanting to see vineyards while you sip, this isn't the spot for you. There was also a couple with a toddler at a table - with an iPad, playing a video outloud without headphones - while the parents were wine tasting inside, so just know that kids are allowed if that matters to you. Once my husband and I went in person we knew that it was the perfect venue as it was open and inviting. Not to mention the staff was fantastic and made us feel so welcome! I also appreciated their quick communication. The day of the event was just perfect! Their staff was so helpful and accommodating. You can tell our guests really enjoyed themselves especially having a host bar. Our event was in the spring, so even if there was a risk of rain having a covered heated patio space gave us peace of mind. I can't thank San Joaquin enough for all of their help and would highly recommend them to our family and friends!

The staff was as friendly and knowledgeable as we remembered, making the tasting experience both enjoyable and informative. The port wines were excellent, and the fact that there's no tasting fee was a nice bonus. Also, they are dog-friendly! We enjoyed the visit so much that we joined the club, which includes three bottles twice a year (April and October). We purchased the April 2025 club shipment, featuring the Special Reserve Tawny, Adagio Port Blanc, and Roriz Vermelho Ruby. We are looking forward to the October Club release. I don't drink alcoholic beverages so I will take our groups comments as a beverage review. The sangria was good and refreshing. The red Cabernet wine was full bodied, dark, not too dry. The servers were kind and attentive. We will be coming back better prepared and ready to listen to some good live music. Good times!
