The members small, but very good. The cocktail menu was quite expansive and also good!

In a word: funky…read more Zyankali Bar was most unexpected. On the lookout for a cool bar, my colleague and I asked the taxi to pull over when we saw this one, a bright yellow beacon in what looked like a residential area. We bumped into the owner himself as we walked up the steps, a kind man with a mustache, wearing bandana and FiveFingers shoes. He informed us that it was a special night: they had a guest bartender from Russia who brought cocktail recipes from home. The decor was haphazard, 70s grunge slash broken down hospital slash botany lab. In the basement, behind the winding stairs, there is a pinball machine and a small dark room with DJ booth (no DJ at that moment) and disco lights. We sat down on hospital beds on the top floor, in front of the plant wall, and ordered Russian cocktails (I have to admit I didn't understand half of the ingredients, but a French waitress indicated her favorites). At some point, the owner came by with a small film crew and spoke to them about the plant wall behind my head. He prided himself on their upkeep, and used them in cocktails when possible. The cocktail I tried was too bitter for my taste, and we switched to beer shortly after (served in 1L glass mugs). We stayed until closing and, beers unfinished, the owner gave us paper bags lined with plastic, poured our beers into them, popped in a straw, and pushed us out onto the street. It sounds unceremonious, but it was not unkind. Then he hopped on his bike and bid us goodnight.

Love it. Hipsterish, sure, with clever decor, drinks served in beakers, animal skulls in cases,…read moreseats as hospital beds, cutesy signs. But the lighting is unique too, and the cocktails are really original, with root and leaf flavors, and high end spirits and absinthes also available neat, and a very, very good value for the price, which is rare among bars serving exotic cocktails. The owner's fashion sense is 30 years out of date, but unlike so many other bars in Berlin, his drink menu isn't - and he's as much of a mad scientist with his flavors and ingredients as the place would suggest. VERY deep menu, and there's so much to try here that it's well worth repeated visits.
