(it contributes to Howick's old fashioned feel) Cafe Paris is a hugely popular place due to its quality food and coffee, but quite pricey for what it is. It's also hard to find a seat, so you have to wonder whether they should expand somehow! Despite that, it's a handy place to meet if you live out east, and you can see much of the goings on of Howick if you enjoy watching interesting people walk past.

They have lots of offerings in the cabinet from filled rolls to little tartlets, and offer coffees and things as well. Make sure to grab some plain croissants on your way out, they are awesome as is, and I particularly like to fill them with lots of yummies myself for work lunches.

Being a local myself I have several wonderful food memories from this place. When I was growing up Dad and I used to stop in every Sat morning after netball to devour one (ok sometimes two) of their ham and cheese croissants and on weekdays I would often be late/disorganized just so that we would HAVE TO pick up one of their filled French sticks for school lunch. To this day, I love The Swiss Bakery and if it weren't for my 'real' job and slowing metabolism I'd be here every day of the week. Pop into The Swiss Bakery for afternoon tea and make sure you order a coffee - it comes with a wee heart shaped shortbread on the side...how sweet!

Pandoro also make cute little dinner rolls and mini loaves, the 5 grain mini loaf is very nice, sliced you can have miniature toast! The Normandy Rye is pretty spectacular too. The guys who work here are fantastic, always really friendly. If you're in central city this is the best place to come for bread, fresh bread from the supermarket bakery is not the same, I wouldn't buy it. You're better to pay the extra and get proper bread made from real ingredients without the 'may contain traces of milk, fish and nut products'. Gross. Someone brought…read morehome an olive bread from La Voie Francaise that got me hooked, so I decided to have a late morning pastry feast of my own. A raspberry chocolate croissant, a chocolate brioche, and a canele topped my plate. The canele was my highlight, crispy and sweet on the outside and gooey on the inside. The brioche was freshly warm and soft but not too rich. The croissant was on the verge, somewhat stale around the edges but still enjoyable. The ups: these pastries and the olive bread were delicious. Prices are very reasonable too, only $10 all up for the three sweets. La Voie Francaise also boasts an inviting atmosphere that's relaxing but well kempt. The downs: I'm not convinced by these tastings that La Voie is all the rage, but that's probably just because I've been spoiled by the French market in Parnell. I'll be back for a croque monsieur at some stage, maybe my mind will change.
