Went in for a very painful tooth from a botched filling by another dentist. When I expressed concern w/Dr. Brooke Adler's recommended treatment plan, and wanted to discuss it some more, Dr. Adler became frustrated and lifted my seat and took off her mask and said "it seems like you don't want to follow through with my recommended treatment". I explained that I did desperately need to be treated, because I was in a lot of pain and my insurance, which covered the cost of the treatment, was expiring that week. Then she said that there wasn't time to do any treatment that day (even though she had just told me she could treat me and I had confirmed multiple times before when setting up the appointment that there would be time). All of this happened within the span of about 5-10 minutes. I said that I had made an appointment specifically for treatment that day (and had taken the time off and moved things around for the treatment). Then Dr. Adler said she would go talk to her office manager. When Dr. Adler came back a few minutes later, she asked me to get up and follow her. I asked if I was going to be treated, and she would only answer "The office manager will explain everything." When I arrived at the manager's office, Dr. Adler quickly left me there. The office manager handed me a referral from Dr. Adler to go see another dentist. I told the office manager that I had told Dr. Adler I did want to move forward with her treatment plan, because there wasn't time to go see another dentist that week. The office manager was arrogant and rude, and refused to help me be seen before my insurance expired. I was so devastated. I had never experienced a doctor or dentist refusing to treat me, or someone acting so petty and smug about withholding treatment from me. This was all bad enough. But then 2 days later, I received a 'Cease and Desist' letter from Pure Zen's attorney stating that if I didn't remove the negative reviews I had posted on Yelp and Google following my experience, that Pure Zen and Dr. Adler would SUE ME for defamation and 'emotional distress' caused by my bad reviews. This added insult to injury, as I was the one who had actually been hurt by this whole situation. I was (and still am) the one in pain and Pure Zen are the ones who were in the wrong. If anything, I should have been suing them! But I had wasted enough stress and mental energy on them already. I responded that I knew my rights and the defamation laws and that businesses cannot win lawsuits against consumers for recounting true experiences with them online. Their attorney began to argue back and forth with me about this via email for several hours the evening before NYE, and stated that if I did not remove the reviews, then they would sue me and I would need to hire a lawyer to defend myself. They were basically trying to bully me with the threat of significant legal expenses to take down my review. When I continued to refuse, citing that my statements were true and that I would defend myself in court if necessary, Pure Zen's attorney replied that she's "looking forward" to suing me and that she may also pursue defamation charges against her law firm (Taft), though I had not mentioned her law firm anywhere online before this. This put me under tremendous stress and anxiety that negatively impacted my holiday weekend, and has continued to stress me out these last few weeks. Ordinary people should not have to worry about companies and medical practices making them go broke if they refuse to allow their right to free speech be taken away from them. It's a form of legal extortion that is wrong and something I would never expect from a medical professional. So far, I have not received any court filing notice, so hopefully this group has come to their senses and dropped their outrageous legal threat against me. It is amazing to me that they didn't just apologize, own up to their mistakes, and work with me to come up with a resolution to get me treated. That's what any good practice would have done. I just hope that no one else has to go through this. read more

I would absolutely recommend getting a second opinion before getting any dental work done here. Back in 2018 I had one filling done while pregnant. I was surprised I needed a filling cause I had no tooth pain but trusted the dentist. Got it filled and since then have had on and off dull tooth pain at the filling site. Was always a bit confused by this. In 2019 I went again (probably nine months after delivering my son) for a cleaning. The dentist comes in after and sits in the corner, elbows on knees, and in a serious manner asks if I had a lot of morning sickness and throwing up while pregnant. I replied "no, why?", feeling confused. He then tells me that I have ten cavities. Ten! I My mouth dropped open as I have never in my life had that volume and my mouth was in no pain what so ever for having that many. I ask questions, trying to understand the shadowing they (hygienist) is showing me. Well I had to get a second opinion. If I was going to have ten cavities filled it wouldn't be here because I did not like the result of the first one. In fall of 2019 I go to IU Health dental school and explain my experience and pure zen and needing a second opinion. They recommended six fillings. Ok, and a couple watch spots but could not justify 10. Well covid hit and I never got them filled. Fast forward to now September 2021 (I still have no tooth pain from these cavities and have maintained oral hygiene) and I have found an exceptional dentist who confirmed IU health's dental school conclusion, with six fillings. We will do four this fall and then wait till 2022 to fill the others. I've done a lot of reading and talking with dentists since this experience. There are different theories of how to approach dental care. Some dentists are more aggressive in approach, more drilling, sometimes unnecessarily. I wish I had never had this dentist fill the first "cavity" as it created more problems after then before. I would not ever recommend this dentist and if you are considering extensive dental work recommended by them please pay out and get a second opinion. read more

The office is beautiful, warm, and comforting. Each exam area has its own TV, comfortable chair, and a zen-like atmosphere. The staff is very welcoming and friendly. Overall, I had a very pleasant experience at Pure Zen. Here is my problem ... during my visit, I was told that I had 9 (yes, 9!) cavities that needed to be filled. It had been awhile since I had been to the dentist, but I was still shocked that I, a person who religiously brushes and flosses, had 9 cavities. It was going to cost approximately $600 (after insurance coverage) to have them filled over the course of 2 separate visits - each visit lasting almost 2 hours. After advice from my wise mother, I decided to get a second opinion. I went back to my old dentist who did a thorough exam and found only ONE cavity. He even had another dentist in his practice do an exam as well. Needless to say, I will not be returning to Pure Zen. While the atmosphere is pleasant, their ethics are not. They seem to care more about making money than the best interest and health of their patients. read more

I am very disappointed to have chosen Pure Zen to do some needed fillings. They are now extremely sensitive and have caused me lots of pain since having them done. I went in for a follow-up and after explaining my situation, was told that "they didn't see anything" but would file down some of the filling in case it was affecting my bite. Well, I knew right then and there that's probably not the case. My bite felt fine, and the pain is deep below, under the actual tooth. It's not surface discomfort, and the pain occurs randomly throughout the day, not just when I'm not eating. I explained this, but they kept telling me to come back when the pain gets worse. (That doesn't seem like an effective preventative healthcare strategy?) The dental assistant preceded to put the drill in my mouth, often slipping and not even hitting the fillings but instead applying it upon my actual tooth. It wasn't ten seconds before she caused me instant-tears-pain that was some of the worst pain I've ever felt in a dental chair. She seemed irritated that I was in tears because of how much it hurt, and at that point, I had had enough and decided not to come back. When I got home, I could feel with my tongue a slight external crack on the inner side of my tooth that wasn't there before. I'm almost 100% positive it was because of this careless employee. I'm about to go back to school for my graduate degree and the last thing I need is to worry if my healthcare is in the right hands. This is a dentistry that really just doesn't care, but the "zen-like" atmosphere cozies you up to believing they do. I'm so saddened by the lack of patient responsibility that this practice has exhibited that I'm just going to find a new dentist elsewhere. They have sucked the energy and care out of me that I'd rather move on and never look back. It should have been done right the first time. And when it's not, it should have been corrected the second time. But instead, they only made the problem worse. Based off my opinion and experience, this is not the place to go if you want appropriate dental care. read more

Very disappointed with the new ownership of Pure Zen. My son, my grandfather and I have been visiting this practice for a few years now and since new ownership have seen things change. My 88 y-o grandfather and son recently went in for their 6 month check ups. My grandfather had some concerns about his denture slipping. The dental hygienist told him the dentist would speak with him, and he did. And charged my grandfather $54 for a "consultation". I must be missing something, because the former dentist and even the dentist we visited for years prior, always did a dental and oral health check once the hygienist was finished with the dental cleaning. Never a charge or fee. Would discuss his denture, partial, oral health all as a part of the 6 month visit. Will he making a change if this type of pricing and service continues. read more

I'm a new patient at this place and I'm gonna say that this has been the best experience I've ever had at a Dentistry. The staff are professional and courteous and the Dentists are very meticulous. I just had two wisdom teeth extracted and it was the most seamless and painless procedure I've had. Their prices are very reasonable and they accept most insurance policies. I'll be going back to have my teeth cleaned in several weeks and I'm looking forward to it. It looks like I have a new set of teeth in my mouth :-)! read more

When I first went here I thought it wouldn't be bad but, after continual conversations of mixing me up with other patients I was done. When I'm asked if I'm canceling both my tooth extraction and Invisalign consultation, another time was asked if I needed to reschedule my tooth repair, they don't seem to be able to keep the schedules straight especially after you just told them who you were. While the dentist was nice I really want more one on one experience with my dentist. I felt like a child in the chair with the hygienist because I was continually scolded for not flossing. I really wish they would of listened to me better since I'm now going to a dentist that is trying to repair my jaw issues. But really what broke the camels back and caused me to look for another dentist was the scheduling staff continually getting me mixed up with other patients, or giving me a time for an appointment and then another time at the reminder call. Apparently I'm not the only one that has had issues after reading reviews. read more

Dr. Hein is one of the best dentists I have ever had. He is very knowledgeable with his work and will make sure to not only get to know you on a health based level but also a personal level. It is very reassuring to have a doctor like Dr. Hein in the area. Hands down, my recent visit was the BEST I've had in decades. The front desk staff was friendly. Kristin my hygienist was AMAZING and performed quick, thorough cleaning of my teeth, and did not use that electric zapper thingy (Ive always hated that!). She's the best hygienist I've ever had. Dr. Hein took extra time with me to discuss my overall dental health and disease prevention, and about life in general. As I was leaving, I realized it felt just like a family reunion in there! This was truly the best dental experience I've ever had! Dr. Julia is amazing!! The staff is very professional, polite, helpful, and knowledgeable. Pure Zen is exactly what you feel as soon as you walk into the office. I called 4 people as soon as I left telling them to make an appointment. The technology is off the charts...I am a patient for life. What my insurance won't cover they gave me options and made it affordable to get my perfect smile back that I lost in a car accident . If you haven't booked an appointment do so ASAP! The "free" consultation is exactly that no hidden cost and with Dr. Julia. She didn't rush through or treat me like "awe your just a freebie and will never be back not gonna waste my time", she was very informative and took her time. I had an absolutely terrible experience. Lindsay and Dr. Shalit tried to convince me that I had previously had 2 fillings for cavities, when my dental record shows I have never had a cavity. What they were seeing were sealants, as I tried to explain, but they would not accept that and continued to tell me that I was simply not remembering having 2 fillings for cavities. A call to my former dentist confirmed that they were sealants. Dr. Shalit wanted to do 3 fillings on cavities. A visit to my former dentist for a 2nd opinion showed no signs of decay or need for fillings. It is disgusting that someone in a position of trust is extorting money from patients for procedures they do not need. It is disgusting that a caregiver makes their patient feel confused and anxious to obtain consent for said procedures. My former dentist is quite the drive from me now, but I will gladly make the drive to continue to see her rather than a dentist who is only concerned about the bottom line. Having the latest technology and fanciest office does you no good if you are lying to your patients and performing unnecessary work to afford it. read more

Excellent place, I went in to ask about Invisalign a year ago and they booked me in immediately. After my consult they got me scheduled right away to start the process. They've always been very good about scheduling me in and they've worked with me when I moved to Chicago so that I could continue treatment. Would totally recommend! read more

Horrible experience. I was told I had to get old fillings replaced even though they weren't even bothering me...and now the new ones are causing me a lot of sensitivity. I had to have three shots to numb a tooth, which has never been necessary in the past. When I felt sensitivity, the dentist seemed irritated. The assistants however, were nice. My next appt (to replace more fillings), I asked for gas (since they got me so stressed out at the previous visit). I have never used gas and I had 4 root canals as a child. They made me wait so long with the gas mask on, I got sick to my stomach. By the time they finally did the work, I was only on oxygen and still had to pay for the gas. Each appt was suppose to be an hour long and I was there both times for over 2hrs. I do not recommend this dentist office. read more

I recently had a less than positive experience with the dental care that I received from Dr. Julia Shalit at Pure Zen Dentistry. What was supposed to be a procedure that would alleviate my concerns with a small space between my two front teeth became a much longer than expected, distressing, and humiliating process leaving me with an end result of veneers that look tremendously worse than what I started with. Not only do they look horrible, the process became DANGEROUS when Dr. Shalit dropped a veneer in the back of my throat as well as the numerous times the temporaries came off while I was sleeping and choked me. Dr. Shalit has done nothing to make this situation right. I absolutely would not recommend this office for your dental needs. Horrible, horrible experience. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! I contacted Pure Zen Dentistry on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, to reschedule my appointment on Monday, July 21, 2014, at 9:00 AM. My initial phone call went unanswered, so I called the office back. This time Val answered the phone. I informed her that I needed to reschedule my appointment. She rudely informed me that the office was closed and would take my information. Well, since you answered the phone, I think you could go on and change the appointment. OH, NO!!! This must be beyond her duties!!! She was very RUDE!!! She acted like no one should be calling. Well, I'm sorry, but 1) I didn't know the office was closed and 2) since you answered the phone just change the appointment. Consequently, they lost a patient today because of VAL. read more
