We just had an outrageous experience. We had my son's hockey skates sharpened and Pure Hockey broke the blade but denied it!! My son skated last night. The skate was not broken. The broken blade was shiny and polished so they had obviously sharpened it and broke it in . The store took no responsibility and charged us $100. I was offered to use the Bauer 3D Skate Lab foot scanner for sizing and based on my results the staff picked four different pairs of skates for me to try on. For each pair, I got to lace them up, stand up/walk around in them, and try them with insoles. When I finally chose a pair staff offered to have the skates baked, molded, and sharpened all for no additional cost. I went to Pure Hockey to get my son fitted for goalie pads. I walked around for 10 minutes and asked 3 people working for help. Finally someone was able to help me. He was a "goalie specialist." He eyeballed my son and said he was likely a 24 inch pad. When I asked if we could try on some pads, he provided us with a 23 inch pad and tried to walk away. I pressed him that it would be ideal if the store had a pair of skates my son could try on with the pads so we could see how well they fit. He said the store did not have goalie skates in his size (size 1) and that a normal skate would not fit the pad (ridiculous statement). I was looking for goalie equipment hoping to grab a new chest protector at the pro hockey store in Glenview it appeared on their website that they did supply goalie equipment so when I got there I saw what I wanted and when getting to the check out the clerk told me that they do not sell the goalie equipment it's there just to try on for sizing I thought that was odd the clerk was very nice and I know it wasn't his fault I wish pro hockey's web page would do better at letting customers know of this I mean it cool they have it there for sizing but pro are going to do that regardless might as well sell it. They recommended a CCM stick for $175 for my daughter. After 4 weeks that stick shredded and I asked to replace it. They did it with another one. Today we went back with the same problem ( after two months) and the manager said that it depends on the care you have of the stick... seriously? It is a hockey stick used only on the ice by a 14y girl and online is packed of bad reviews that this CCM stick falls apart. Why does Pure Hockey keeps selling this stick that has something doesn't work and everybody knows it. No more. I was a devoted fan of Total Hockey at this location (above the other TH locations even, and any of the local pro shops - and I've been to them all). Now, they use automated sharpeners, and have sharpening staff that aren't interested in customer service or performing repairs (looking at you Larry). So for the fun of it, I took my skates to Jerry's at MPIA and a) got the repair done inexpensively and quickly, and b) actually got a lesson on skate sharpening from the guy working there. And guess what, the sharpening was the best I've ever had. Never again Pure Hockey. At least not for service regarding my skates. read more

Please do not take your skates here to be sharpened under any circumstances! We dropped our son's skates off for sharpening before a hockey game. Went to pick them up and the store had given them to away to someone else. They had no way of tracking down who had our skates because they don't keep any records. The sharpening process is set up for failure. Apparently they don't mark the skates before sharpening them. There is always a long wait because of the demand. Then when the skates are ready, they are just placed out on a bench for anyone to grab. So the whole thing is just a sh*t show. To add insult to injury, the store first tried to convince us to take the pair they had swapped for our skates. But they were clearly NOT our son's skates as they were a different size and we couldn't even lace them up all the way! Then the store finally admitted to us that it was the second time that day they had accidentally swapped skates. Lesson learned, we will not be dropping our skates off here in the future. UPDATE: Was able to talk to district management and they are reviewing their skate sharpening processes so hopefully this won't happen again.... read more

I asked them to install it but they were too busy( 3 other customers in the store). They were smug and not very helpful. I was told it would be easy.It wasn't and returned it the next day. Called Pure Hockey. They didn't hesitate to install.Pure hockey will be the sole supplier for my seven year olds hockey needs for as long as he plays hockey. read more

However, I was impressed to find that the store associates were all around and easily available to help answer any of my questions. HUGE selection, and because they apparently do a lot of online business, prices are as competitive as you'll ever see -- plus, you actually get to try stuff on before you buy it, unlike online-only retailers. The Breakaway program pays for itself if you're going to spend a few hundred bucks anyway, so do it -- it includes perks and free returns online, as well as free skate sharpening depending upon the level of membership. If they don't have something, they can usually get it from another Total Hockey store at no cost, which is more palatable to me than buying something online you're not sure about. I wish I could give it 3.5 stars, because it's not quite 4. The perks and selection are worth making this your go-to store *IF* you actually know what you want or are comfortable figuring it out with minimal assistance. The staff could be much more knowledgeable, and they're not very patient when one wants to take more than 10 seconds to mull over the pros and cons of a fairly large purchase. If they're not socializing amongst themselves (with liberal use of the f-bomb, I might add), they're doing side work so they don't have to stay long after close instead of helping customers. Gunzo's or Perani's is a much better bet if you actually want help. I get that bricks-and-mortar stores have to compete in an online world in order to survive (I still can't believe that Gunzo's doesn't have a price-match guarantee, for example), so Total Hockey is doing many of the right things. I just wish the staff were better trained and more conscientious. read more

*This review is about the Total Hockey franchise, not just one particular location. Total Hockey going out of business for this reason. I just mail ordered something and they dropped the ball on that. 3-day shipping turned into one week+. These guys try to make up with an expensive looking store front and interior what they lack and in actual hockey knowledge and experience. Most of the skate sharpeners tend to be high-school stoners who know zilch about actual craftsmanship. I even ordered a high-ticket item from these guys once and they charged me more than what the sticker said! Lol. I know bc the sticker was still attached when they arrived at my doorstep. Went in today and worked with a salesman who clearly knew next to little about hockey. He was able to check the price on items, but that was the extent of his knowledge. A few years back when I just started playing a salesman sold me a pair of skates a size too big and a stick with way too much of a curve. Today (Sunday) they were super busy but seemed to only have one salesman (previously mentioned) on the floor. Wilmette bike and sport or gunzos are better options than this place; you may save a few dollars here but it's not worth it unless you are an experienced players who knows what she/he wants. read more

Had a fantastic experience there on my first visit to the store today. Went to get gear for our son who's signed up for a beginning hockey class. I was clueless as to how to pick out equipment and asked for help. Nick was incredibly helpful. He helped us pick out skates, shin guards, elbow pads (which he's ordering because they didn't have a small enough size) and a helmet. Was really great with the helmet. My son was a little scared putting it on and Nick did a bunch of stuff to calm him down, including opening up the area where the chin strap snaps on by a bit so that way we don't have to press so hard to get it on. Again, really great service and Nick was so good in patiently taking us through the process of getting everything. The prices were very reasonable (about $125 for all the equipment) and the service was excellent, especially knowing that my expenditure was very small compared to what most people probably spend there. Will definitely go back there if my son sticks with hockey. read more

Great selection, friendly (yet sometimes unknowledgeable) staff. However, DON'T GET YOUR SKATES SHARPENED HERE OR AT ANY OF THEIR LOCATIONS. Brought in two pairs to sharpen and both pairs got screwed up on the tips/rockers because the twerps doing the sharpening were in too much of a hurry. Go to Jerry's or Gunzo's for that. Otherwise an OK store for finding great gear of all levels at good prices. Plus ordering on-line and easy in-store return is great. COMPARE ON-LINE PRICING BEFORE YOU GO THERE THOUGH. Their site often has lower prices than what you pay in the store. They'll adjust the price, but only if you ask them to. read more

I have been a loyal Gunzo's customer for almost the full 5 years that I have lived in Chicago. I live in the city and after they closed the Johnny's East location, I still took the time to drive to the Dempster St. location in Morton Grove because I felt that they were the best option for sharpening and small accessories. I recently purchased a nice pair of Bauer skates online and went to Gunzo's today to have them baked and sharpened. The gentlemen there told me it would be $65.00. I laughed until I realized that he was serious. He told me $15 for the FIRST TIME sharpening (normal is $7) and the rest for the baking. Needless to say I left. I drove further out to Total Hockey in Glenview and the wonderful people there charged me $6.00 . That's right, SIX DOLLARS!! I tipped the sharpener for the first time in my life. If they would have charged $40-50, I would have then understood that the normal price must be somewhere around what Gunzo's was asking. Obviously this is not the case. I will never visit Gunzo's again and will take the extra 15 min each way to go to Total Hockey now that I know how greedy Gunzo's is. Total Hockey also had waxed laces for $3.99 ($9.99 @ Gunzo's). Pretty bummed but glad I found out before wasting any more of my money there. I also bought my brother a pair of skates from Total Hockey and the staff is extremely helpful read more
