My husband was out in Bakersfield, her a cycling race and decided to treat me to a spa day during his ride. This was not what I expected. This is a place that offers massage and facials, but doesn't have any spa amenities. Furthermore, they have a skeleton staff. My facial was canceled hours before the service because the esthetician got sick. This is understandable with the state of the world. However, they didn't have anybody else to provide the service. Well, no problem. Let me still get my 10 AM massage. I get to the salon at 10 AM. Yelp, says they open at 9 am but nobody is there. I say at about 10:01am Karina shows up. She needs about 10 minutes to prepare before we can start the massage. I'm not in a rush, so no problem. My 90 minute massage was cut down to probably about 75 minutes. When I confronted her about it, she did takeoff $10. But many people would not say anything at all. I found this to be unethical. The whole thing was rather disappointing. read more

I have been here three times: a facial and two massages. I've had a few facials from different estheticians in town and this was my least favorite, but that could have been that particular gal and not a reflection of their business. But let me get to the real deal: massages! I had my first one two days before my wedding. My masseuse was phenomenal. It was the perfect combination of soothing and relaxing mixed with deep tissue to help me destress before the big day. Unfortunately she left. I went with the receptionist's recommendation to try Nicole and I'm so glad I did. Not only are her hands made of pure gold (or possibly steel) but she made me feel comfortable and casually gave me so information on muscles work, proper stretching, etc. I left feeling more knowledgeable about my own body and not overwhelmed, which can happen when a masseuse talks nonstop through the hour. Nicole even texted to follow up with me the following day. She was amazing even though I was sore the next day. But don't fret, intense deep tissue was my own choice! Dishonest and flat out lied ! I guess honesty and morals dont mean anything! I don't recommend if you are paying cash or credit card! Please let me explain. I called about a month ahead and got a quote for 360.00 which included all services listed and cupping. Here is the services I received: acrylic nails full set 45.00, madheri pediatric 40.00, back to basic massage: 70.00, 60 min. Classic facial: 75.00 and a sugar scrub for 70.00 dollars. I did not receive the cupping as the massage therapist indicated she was not yet certified for cupping. FULL Charge of 310.00 for services. However, my husband drove down from lake Isabella to pay the bill in full due to the card we used being declined. So, the front desk lady charged my husband 360.00. He handed her 4 - 100.00 dollar bill's. She handed him 40 dollars as cash back. He even gave her an extra 20.00 to tip for the ladies who worked on me. So total cash given was 380.00. After I finished I asked for a written receipt. The receptionist that helped my husband had left for the day. The receipt I received was for 310.00. My husband was waiting in the car and when I showed him the receipt he stated" he paid 360.00 plus a tip of 20.00 extra" on top of what I tipped for our credit card declining in the first place." I went back in and spoke with the front desk. They stated the money in the register was correct and matched the receipt. They tried calling the original front desk lady, however she did not answer her phone. My receipt giving was $50.00 shorter than what we paid in cash. So, i asked if the extra charged was for the cupping (which I didnt receive). The lady said that we weren't charged for it. I stated my husband paid $360.00 and gave an extra tip of $20.00 dollars. What happened to the extra money given? They stated, "What extra money! The extra $50.00 and the extra $20 was not there. They said to call back on Saturday, the same front desk lady will be working. I called Saturday and spoke with the front desk lady. She stated they could only offer me another facial, no store credit. I didnt understand since we paid over the amount charged. I asked for a store credit so I could get my nails again. She declined and stated again only a facial. So, when I asked where the extra money went she stated my husband only paid $310.00 in cash and implied she gave him 90.00 dollars cash back. His word against her word, I'll let you decide. So sad... it took a while to save up for my birthday surprise. read more

**Disclaimer - I have no idea what this place does other than the one service I get, so this is more of a review for Kristina Black than the spa.** I typically make it a point to get a massage every few months, but I recently tweaked my back somehow and needed one bad. For anyone that's searched around in Bakersfield for a good Massage therapist, it's hard to find a reputable place here in town that doesn't have that creepy vibe to it. No thank you, I don't need you to "finish" my massage for an extra $20. When I read the earlier reviews for Kristina, I was optimistic. Yay, an actual professional! I arrived for my appointment a few minutes early, and after she was done with her previous customer, I was shown back to her room. Her work space is clean, quiet, and decorated about like you would expect. She came in a few minutes later and went to work on me. Two things made it better than normal - 1) this lady has death grip strong hands. 2) she doesn't clam up and work silent the whole hour. She's friendly and makes polite conversation if you like. Her massage was relaxing and thorough. I walked out an hour later feeling much more relaxed. Granted, I knew I would be sore today from it, but that will pass along with the knots she worked out. Oh My Goodness! It's as if I was in the desert and I came across an oasis! I've been traveling up and down the central valley for the last 4 weeks and my body was s-c-r-e-a-m-i-n-g for some care. I was in town on business for just 24 hours. Highly stressed I Yelped day spas in Bakersfield and came across this one. I was looking forward to giving it a try just based on the friendly crew picture and the few, but good reviews. I booked a massage . I was a little surprised when I wasn't really asked anything on the phone even after saying I had never been there before. I filled the girl in on my needs ( I don't remember her name) honestly, she didn't seem too interested. Since I was new to the area I left my hotel early to make sure I wasn't late. I got there really early figuring I'd just relax in a relaxing room before hand. I was a little surprised that they didn't have a relaxing room, just a tiny little space with really old magazines and lukewarm water for tea.Oh well, it was half the price of any day spa in the bay area that I come from so I was OK with that tiny room. Pretty soon my appointment time comes (4:30) and goes so I step out into the reception area and asked something , I don't even remember what but the girl behind the counter said something like "he will be right out". "He?" I didn't know it was going to be a man. I've NEVER booked a massage and had it be a man.There was just no way I was going to get a massage by the man that just walked out of the back that very second calling my name. I'm sure he was nice and all but I just couldn't believe that girl didn't say anything on the phone. Especially after I told her it would be my first time there. She said I could reschedule...for TUESDAY, and it was WEDNESDAY. I told her on the phone I was there for 1 day and in person that I was just there for the day. I told her that she should have told me on the phone that it was going to be a man then I just left. This is the only place I truly I miss since I moved out of Bakersfield! I would make it a point to treat myself at least once a month. They offer just about every treatment you can think of. I have always had my facials done by Rosemary and my massages by Samantha. Rosemary can specifically tailor your facial to the needs of your face. I can honestly say my complexion has improved 100% since seeing Rose. She is very gentle yet thorough and my face always felt fresh and had a wonderful glow afterwards. Samantha always gave wonderful massages. I even got a scrub from her. Amazing. I think I might have fallen asleep a few times too! The spa itself is beautiful and is very relaxing. They sell different types of candles and the place always smells wonderful. I often would schedule my facial then have a light lunch then have my massage. (They have a local sandwich shop that you can order from) You can eat out on their serene patio and enjoy some sun before your next treatment. Bethany is so professional and sweet. Was really surprised by how AMAZING this place is. I couldn't get an appointment at any of my other usually spots so I thought I would try this place. I was a little worried, I hate going to massage places for the first time, however I was desperate for an hour long massage so I gave this place a try. I am so happy I did! There is plenty of street parking by this place, and they also have a small parking lot. Inside the spa is clean and decorated "spa like". They had some hot tea and cupcakes for in the waiting room. My only suggestion or reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of the waiting room. To me half of the spa experience is the ambiance. Ideally I have also found it easier to relax before my massage if the room is located away from the cash register and people finishing up. I know its not a big deal at all, and like I said that was the only minor minor thing! Cecei was my masseuse and she was great! She was so friendly and made me feel right at ease. My favorite part of the massage was that the massage beds were heated. Yes you ready that right HEATED! It was heavenly. Another thing I really enjoyed about the massage was how knowledgeable Cecei was. Before we even started she had me place my legs "like a frog". This reduced any stress on the back and really changed the massage. One of my biggest complaints about massages in the past have been that they sometimes just get right into it without warming your muscles up. Then you are a lot more tense and its harder to relax. Cecei was great at warming my muscles up before trying to get knots out or getting more tough. This was prolly the best leg massage I have ever had, I'm not sure what she did, but it felt wonderful. Also the shoulder and head massage is perfect, she does a great job with that as well. For the first time ever I had my face massaged, it was weird at first, but I really liked it. This place was absolutely amazing! After calling around to multiple places, they were the only spot able to get me in quickly, without having to go to a cheapy foot massage place. The receptionist was super friendly and spoke with me the whole time, while I waited for my room. Nicole handled my massage. She asked me about problematic areas before we started, and made it a point to focus on a huge knot I've had in my neck and shoulder for the past few weeks. Before she did anything that she thought would be painful or uncomfortable, she gave me warning. I was able to move my neck and arm for the first time in over a week when she was done! She knew the different muscles and gave me recommendations for at-home care and stretches. I was really impressed with all her knowledge and the focus she put into helping me feel a little less pain! Apparently everything is always booked a month in advance. After going back and forth about an appointment and her being completely unhelpful and inflexible, she asked me for my credit card numbers I hold the appointment! For a gift card!! When I said I didn't feel comfortable giving my card info, she was very rude and unprofessional. This business needs to train their receptionist on proper phone etiquette and customer service. I asked before spending $134.00 dollars that I could return the product. Upon walking out and going on my phone I found cheaper price elsewhere and so o literally turned around went back inside and was told no I could not return the product. I even asked if I could at least but two and get the 3 free. I was told nope and the front staff was inexperienced and was Mis informed. I've gotten a few massages done by Kristina B., and they have been some of my best massages! I have some problems with headaches and have been to many massage therapists to try to help with this problem, and though the massages were all nice, they didn't really help with my headaches. When I went to Kristina, I told her my main reason for coming in, and she she actively worked on the spots that could be causing my headaches. This was the first time I felt that a massage therapist cared enough about me and why I was there, to try to help me! I also sometimes feel awkward of talking to the masseuse while I'm on the table, but Kristia is so nice and easygoing I was put at ease right away. I have been having prenatal massages from Kristina Black weekly since I was almost 30 weeks pregnant. I cannot tell you the difference it has made in how I have felt in the last stretch of this pregnancy! Kristina provides a soothing environment that smells and sounds relaxing upon entering her room. My biggest issue has been hip and back pain- I walk in aching and walk out feeling like I've never had any pain. I have had many prenatal massages over the course of my 3 pregnancies from various local therapists, but I can confidently say that prenatal massages with Kristina are the best I've had and have made life more bearable as a working mom who has 2 little ones to care for at home. Kristina is respectful if you are there to relax in silence, but I have never been able to make it through a session without chatting because she is so easy to talk with and likeable. I also love the lotions and relaxing mists she uses throughout the session. I have referred every pregnant lady I know to her. She is amazing and worth every penny. I used to work in a spa and I've had every type of massage by many different therapists over the years. Kristina Black is one of the best I've been too. I started going to her in my 2nd trimester and have seen her every month thereafter. I have an SI joint issue and she does fantastic massage/stretching for that area. With only 4 weeks to go I can't wait for her to start trigger points on me to help start labor. She has great strong hands and always asks what areas need focus, if I need to just relax and get some quiet time, or if I'm in a mood to chat. I really appreciate that. Her room is quiet and peaceful. I recommend the extra body scrub you can add for 10 bucks...especially when she has the chocolate scrub...yum! I went to Pure Essentials to get a Brazilian wax. I was impressed by the calming and tranquil atmosphere when I arrived. However, my experience waxing was not as tranquil. It took two hours (YES - TWO HOURS!) to complete the wax! The esthetician wasn't sure whether or not to use hard or soft wax and took a long time to decide which one to use. She left me with doubts about what she was doing and her waxing abilities. I have not used Pure Essentials' other services, but I think I will be looking elsewhere for waxing services. I've had waxing done before and this was the most painful experience I've had. read more
