Just started my pilates/barre journey, and love Pure Barre! Great for a recovery class from lagree/solidcore or strength training as each class stretches your body out extremely well. The space of the class brings your mind to a soft meditative focus. They have a variety of classes from classic (medium difficulty), define (greater focus on core and strength), and align (stretch/recovery). I've gone to the trifecta of locations (Greenwich, Flatiron, and Williamsburg), and I think this location is one of my favorites with proximity to Union Sq trains and the open space of the studio. Awesome instructors who are very supportive. Class goes quickly since it's mixed with regulars who have often gone to Pure Barre in the past, but usually if you're newer the instructor pays more attention to your form and helps. After a few classes, you learn the regular moves + positions and you're able to get a grasp much better on how your form should be. Flatiron Pure Barre is paired in a space with Cyclebar and has a massive selection of lockers + showers, Williamsburg has great lockers (both locking and shelves) but is smaller, and Union Square has nice locking lockers and changing areas. **NOTE: MAKE SURE TO BRING GRIPPY SOCKS (barre socks) or else you'll end up paying ~$20 for the socks they have in the studio (which are nice but let's be real no one should be paying $20 for grippy socks) read more

Went for the introductory class. Although it was a truncated version of the regular sessions, I got a good sense of how classes would go. For an absolute beginner, the class moves quite fast, and although I was able to keep up, there were some instances where I was a bit lost. The entire class was new, and I noticed the same thing with a few of the other participants. Otherwise, it is a good class, and I was thoroughly sore the next day (a good sore). This class works you out very well. If you have injuries, just let your instructor know, and they will show you alternative movements. It's worth a test run. Just get your heating pads, icy hot and aspirin ready. read more

Love Pure Barre and this studio is great. I originally signed up for my membership here and with the unlimited you can go to various studios across the city. Very convenient and you get to do various classes and instructors. This location has three changing rooms and two restrooms with a huge lobby/waiting area. The instructors are all so friendly and helpful when you haven't tried a class before. I love that the classes are different even when you think you know what's going to happen, there is always something new to learn. They keep the format dynamic, and I can tell the difference in posture and overall body movement. Doesn't seem like a serious workout...but it works! read more

Went to a trial class. They forced me to buy grip socks even as it was a class requirement (feels like a stretch). They didn't have Apple Pay and asked for my account and routing number (a bit inappropriate for the setting if you ask me). I was shocked to see they charged me $20 for them without letting me know the price beforehand. I should have asked myself, but i definitely think a business should let you know before selling you a severely overpriced item. Class wasn't for me personally, might be for others, just beware to bring your own grip socks if you are going to try them out. If you're looking for a workout that's low-impact, has mostly female members, and don't care about locker room amenities, then you should try Barre. However, I preferred the West Village Pure Barre location versus the Union Square one, so I would recommend that over this one. The service here wasn't as friendly or welcoming as I would have liked, the teacher wasn't as helpful or effective, and the workout was simply better at the West Village location. Also, the class I took here was more dance-themed versus strength-focused, so I didn't walk away feeling like I got a good workout in or challenged my muscles. This location is also much bigger with twice as many more people in class, so you're going to get less attention. Overall, I still got a good Barre workout in, but the instruction, workout, and customer service weren't up to par. read more

This is probably my favorite pure barre studio in the city. The reception/retail area is so large and welcoming, which I've found to be rare at Pure Barre studios in general. There are lots of places to sit and chill while you wait for class to start. I love just walking in. Lots of changing areas and bathrooms I never feel rushed heading into class. I bought a new client offer at the Columbus Circle location and today I came to the Union Square one for the first time --the two locations belong to the same owners. I must say I love it here better: It was an empower class, so more cardio-based, and there were only six people in class. The teacher was very clear and the front desk was nice. The studio space is beautiful! They have a lobby/lounge area with carpet and a couch and full of natural light. I also love that there were no poles or pillars inside the classroom, unlike the UWS Columbus Avenue location that I went to once on ClassPass or the Exhale Flatiron location--those things divide the room up and annoyingly obstruct views, so I'm happy that it isn't the case here at Union Square! They also have more changing rooms and on-site restroom compared to the Columbus Circle one. If I could change one thing I would say the class times don't fit with my schedule perfectly. The 7am ones are too early and the 8am ones are a bit late. That's the reason why I'd only take Empower at 8am--because the class is five minutes shorter. Some studios have two classrooms offering classes both on the hour and on the half hour. read more

I buzzed up at 4pm when my class time started. By the time I got up to the studio, the teacher had completely kicked off the class (it was 4:01). And the woman at the front desk would not let me into the class, and couldn't give me any help whatsoever I'm terms of cost because I had booked through ClassPass. This was my first workout class I was able to go to after COVID, and I was so looking forward to it. A huge bummer that they would be so unhelpful. Make sure you arrive at least 5 minutes in advance. DISCLAIMER: I am not athletic, but like to try new things. For example, I will hike a challenging trail on accident, but if you tell me a bunch of rules I have to follow including how often I have to drink water and what should be in my fanny pack before we can start--I'm done. I must warn you... I did not have the pleasure of stepping foot into the classroom so if that is the intel you are looking for, you should not read any further. But if you are a NEW client thinking about signing up--you should DEFINITELY READ ON. I was SO excited to try this class at this location--last week I tried to sign up the day before to find out I would be #12 on the waitlist, unlikely to get on, but wouldn't get a phone call until right up until the class started (I was envisioning flying standby in yoga gear outside the studio--not my cup of tea). I ask, what's your advice for me, how many days in advance should I call? She says 2-3. OK, I can follow instructions, or so I thought.... Let's start from the beginning: I am coming from midtown east around 32nd st, take the 6 to union square. I get out and try to find my bearings as I've never been before (admittedly I have no sense of direction) but I have a few minutes until it is 5:30 (when the class starts) so I think I am alright, so close, won't be a problem! I look around and see 80 fifth ave, but not 78. I guess we can boil it down to me being an idiot, but really, how late will I be? I finally see it, get off the elevator--SO excited--to be greeted by a receptionist who asks me my name, which I tell her slowly and spell out. She finds me, then looks at me and says "Is THAT what you're wearing for the class?" "Well, actually I was planning on ch..." "Nevermind, it doesn't matter anyway, it's 5 minutes past the start time, they are about to plank, which means you can't go in anyway. Shall I schedule another appt for you?" I'm shell shocked, in disbelief-- greater than 5 min and the doors close, sorry for your luck---what plan are you on? A good question I say, I don't know exactly the details of my pass as I was told I would get an email and I never did. She slowly reads my email to me (as if I might be challenged), yes, it's correct. You probably got the free one week promotion. Again I become flustered--I PAID money for 5 classes and I was told they were good until Dec. This woman so matter of fact made me feel like I must have misunderstood--"this was on the website, clear for everyone to see" I guess I must have this issue because I did everything on the phone? "No, that shouldn't be any different" So clearly... the only person at fault here is me--even though I had no clue about this 5 minute rule or even what type of pass I signed up for? No worries, we allow the first class miss without penalty--I'm going to put a note on your profile that says you understand the cancellation policy now so that NEXT time you will get the $20 penalty email. Thanks. Thanks alot. What happened next was so unpredictable, I'll spare you the gory details. Basically, a student in the class I "missed" bumped her head on the stereo shelf resulting in a gash just next to her eyeball and gushing blood. As fate would have it, the first aid kit was missing all the supplies to manage a cut "because we never have accidents here" Rita would tell me, and I tried to do some damage control while she was on the phone with her boss figuring out what to do. I try to convince her to go to the ER because it's always better to be safe than sorry when your face is concerned, and I really hope she decided to go that route. I wouldn't know as I had enough excitement and disappointment in 20min to want to waste anymore time-- I did race out of work to try to get there on time--not because of the threat of the 5 min penalty since I didn't know about it yet--but bc I actually love yoga barre and was really excited to spend every minute of the class enjoying it. So, I get why the policy exists, but I don't know if this is the right way to deliver it. And the way the receptionist made me feel was really--uncalled for. I REALLY wanted to ask for my money back and was seriously considering eating what I paid just bc I couldn't see how there could possibly be any value in an institution that would have such rules and condone such interactions with patrons. But that's just me. She did so graciously point out that "it's only 5 classes, just take them here or at the other 2 manhattan locations and then you can try out the brooklyn location if you like. I think there's two, I've never been." Thanks again. So, will I go back? Well yes. I did pay and I can't get a refund, it's too much money for me to just give away. So I will go and hopefully not miss the 5min rule. At least now I know the threat exists--finding out unexpectedly was really tough. I get that the demand is high, but I don't know if you can use that as an excuse to be condescending or make people feel like you're doing them a favor. read more

First time barre class, signed up for free as the studio was having a promotion. This location is very assessable. The studio is very clean. I love how they offer scrunchies at the front desk. There were lockers with keys for us to use and changing rooms fully stocked with body wipes, facial wipes, lotion, and spray on deodorant. The class instructor came around and corrected our form. We got a good moderate workout in and a good cool down. I just wish we had not rushed through the stretches. I love how the mural gives off great vibes. read more

I am glad that other people here have commented on the smell! For the first few minutes I thought someone near me had passed some gas and then I thought it was me who smelled! So glad to find out it was neither, but the downside is that means it's the studio... I've taken barre at Chelsea Piers, Flybarre and Exhale. I've been dying to try Pure Barre for months and finally able to and it was a disappointment. First of all the room was really warm and I started feeling a bit sweaty very quickly which I didn't like. As a first time pure barrer I didn't really know what was going on and I really needed to see what was going on. The instructor did come around a few times to help me but it happened so fast and was not particularly helpful. She kept saying tuck but I couldn't get a sense of what she meant by that. The whole class also felt very hectic and the music was very loud! Like very loud! I did not like it. As for other things: no showers in the studio, one bathroom, a few changing rooms, lockers with keys, fruit for grabs, and other usual stuff you expect - hair ties, bobby pins, etc... I would give the Williamsburg location a shot, but probably wouldn't return to this union square one. read more

You are not allowed to be in class if you are 5 minutes late even if you came *right at the 5 minute* point. I signed up for the 9am Saturday class on class pass and came to the class exactly at the mark 9:05. If I arrived at 9:06, I would have accepted my lateness. The email says you won't be admitted to class if you are "over" 5 minutes late. But I came right at 9:05am. The location was hard to find - there's no storefront that signals the studio and the doorbell sign was smudged and hard to recognize. I've been to at least 10 different classes on class pass at various studios in NYC and most of them are very lenient on arrival times (considering the traffic in NYC). If they have strict rules, they would send out a *separate email* reminding the students, instead of relying on the general email sent out by class pass. In light of all this, the lateness policy seemed to be too unforgiving. read more

My first impressions: The studio smelled gross. For an early morning class, there might have been 1 previous class - how does the carpet already smell like sweat and feet? We started off with core work, which quickly put me into a sweat and then moved through the exercises. Overall, I wasn't as impressed as I have been with other classes. I love Exhale Core Fusion classes, and I also enjoy classes at Physique 57 and Flybarre. Pure Barre didn't match up to the other barre classes - there was some but minimal correction, and there was even someone who was going to be a new instructor taking this class. Her form looked solid but she didn't even look like she was moving. I know there is an emphasis on micro-movements but she literally didn't look like she was even pulsing. The Union Square studio has small digital lockers, some changing rooms and a bathroom. All in all, I am not sure I would come back - would prefer the other barre classes. Also, note, they won't let you in 5 minutes after class starts. read more

When I came here the first time I felt like I didn't know where anything was and the receptionists were not helpful nor have I felt particularly welcomed on repeat visits. The studio has very bright white lighting whereas I prefer softer lights. This location does not have facial or sweat wipes and I'm not sure if they have tampons or not. One benefit is the lockers. The workout does maintain the same pure barre standard that you find at other locations. It would be nice if this location had showers, esp. since no sweat wipes here and the location is larger. read more

Pure Barre is a great workout and the music is upbeat and fun. I have been to a few classes here and they have been good. I find that sometimes the teachers can be a little unfriendly but generally a very positive experience. Bring water and sticky socks so you won't have to buy them there. Also, leggings are the only appropriate pants to wear. read more

First time attending a session. I've had a smooth transaction with the receptionist; the trainer was friendly and made sure you had all you needed. The changing room area was neat and stocked with dry shampoo and deodorant for after. The trainer ( Christine) was informative and even made sure she was informed of any injuries her new students may have before session started and advised accordingly. It was an continuous fast paced core intensive workout with short breaks in between. Suitable for those looking for a jump start in the morning or anyone who'd like to try something different. I have waited to write this review but feel it is time as I keep getting emails inviting me to come back. The studio is in a highly concentrated area that includes universities, tech companies, mental and other kinda of health providers as well as shopping. I am in my late 40's, a heath provider, athletic with money to spend. I took a few months of classes and decided I'd like to commit to a year membership and continue. I was excited! I had arranged my work schedule to make the classes and teachers I had grown to love. And yet a week into my year membership they changed the entire schedule. I was no longer able to take many of the teachers and classes I had grown to love. When I asked about why they had changed the schedule I was told (by the new manager) they were trying to capture a different demographic. I asked what demographic where they trying to capture, without skipping a beat she said a younger demographic. So, I took my business else where. read more

Despite trying tons of barre classes around Manhattan, including Exhale, Pop Physique, Physique 57, and Barre Method, I only recently tried out Pure Barre at their Union Square location. The reception area is very large, and despite it being my first class and getting a notification to please arrive 15 minutes ahead of time, I was running a bit late. Next time I'll try to get there a bit earlier to take advantage of the lounge area with magazines and clothes to browse through.The kind woman at the reception desk helped me check in and got my equipment (weights and a ball) laid out for me so I was ready to go after throwing my things in a locker. My instructor was upbeat and encouraging, and the 55-minute long class went by quickly. They had three changing rooms, plenty of lockers, and a bathroom stocked with deodorant, face wash, lotion, etc. in the back. read more

I have been a member for over 5 years and I still have a strong love for Pure Barre! It is the first work out that I consistently get up at 5am for and that I am actually EXCITED to do each day! I am in the best shape I have ever been (other than grade school-and maybe even then!). I love that there are different formats of classes and that you can adjust each class to your needs-more of a workout when you want it and modifications for days that things just aren't feeling quite right. I am nearing my 500th class and I have no thoughts of stopping! read more

Three stars is "A-OK" and that's exactly what it was. Not awesome, totally fine. But after reading all the great reviews of the barre workout I thought this had to be grueling, mind-blowing... to me, this was just another new way to work out. And I don't workout a lot. I've been to yoga like four times this year. And it's September. At $30 plus I'm going to just continue yoga and maybe some dance classes. Mostly I felt my top of thighs burn. I was shaking sometimes during the class, and the abs workout was difficult, very difficult. But all in all, not as amazing as I thought it would be from so many reviewers saying they were addicted to this after never liking working out. Nice place, very friendly and personable teacher and front desk person. Amateur tip: don't wear regular socks- you'll slip frustratingly without socks with sticky pads on the bottom of them. Next day update::: I swear to Gawd I was in the shower and clenched my ass in the "tuck" thing that barre class makes you do, and I felt something solid there in my side ass, something I had never felt before. I believe this thing I felt was muscle. Very interested in investigating developmental possibilities for said muscle, and its symmetrical buddy on other side of ass. Will probably go back to barre class maybe 1x a week. I feel new muscle (not new, just previously horridly neglected) after ONE class? Intriguing. INTRIGUING! I have hope for my ass to be the beacon of ass-ness it once was. read more

Was lucky enough to try out pure barre through classpass, after staying up till midnight a few nights in a row to nab a spot. Wish I went to bed when I wanted to and taken a different class. While I'm not new to barre (I love Physique 57, core fusion) I found this to be completely impossible for a newbie. Why? Here's my assessment: The instructor does not do the moves with you. She demonstrates for about 3 seconds the first move, and then just tells you to "tuck." Tuck what? I understand the tiny movements in barre classes but for a lot of the moves, you could barely see what anyone was doing. This is where the instructor is supposed to come in and help. She only came to help when I was visibly exasperated and had to call her over. To make matters worse, everyone in the class is at different levels. Meaning, No 2 people are doing the same move. When the instructor isn't doing the moves, and everyone is doing something different, it's impossible to determine what you're supposed to be doing. Then, if it wasn't difficult enough, they turn the lights off at the end (while still doing moves, not for a cool down) so now you can't even look at the 5 people around you who are all doing moves differently. If you're looking for something new, at their prices, I highly recommend trying physique or core fusion... While you might not be able to get through every pulse, at least you'll know what you're supposed to be pulsing. read more

I'd like to apologize in advance for this essay. If you don't feel like reading this - basically I really liked Pure Barre and do it again if I could afford it and actually knew my daily/weekly schedule. I heard a lot about barre and how amazing it is - so when I saw that Pure Barre had a new client special ($150/unlimited month) - I took it. It's close to the office and was on summer hours, so I could go to the studio for the 6:30am class and be at the office and ready to work by 8. But please note that there isn't a shower - so either live near the studio, or bring wipes. Also, I ended up buying grippy socks because I heard they'd help with the 90-second plank and with any move where we had to be on our toes - and I thought they really helped. But, they tend to be hard to remember to bring... and they're $13/pair. Just a note. And there's a fountain next to the lockers - just bring a water bottle. But there's also only one bathroom, so either get there early or leave the class a few minutes early so you can use it without waiting on line. Since this was my very first time, I was half scared and half excited. My friends all said that I wouldn't be able to walk the next day, but they also said I'd love it. And I did love it - but I wasn't too sore the next day. Maybe I didn't do it correctly... Anyway, for complete barre newbies like I was, I recommend going to a class (super early) taught by either Abby or Jessica. I've found that they really take their time to explain exactly what a "tuck" is (Jessica likes to say it's like pulling up your zipper - which totally helps) and to make sure that you're doing the move correctly. While it is an all levels class, I think it's pretty easy to see who's more advanced - and I tend to follow them, especially if I'm confused and didn't really watch or understand what the teacher said. And just a tip - definitely stick with tiny movements, no matter how tempted it may be to use bigger movements. You definitely see results if you do barre often enough - my seat, abs and arms were more defined after just a month SO, let's talk about teachers. I only had a few during my one month (I'm waiting until my busy season is over so I can go and start a membership) but here's what I thought of them (if I took more than one class with them): Abby - Probably my favorite (but I definitely had three). She's so spunky and fun and enthusiastic, and I like that she spent a good few minutes with each newbie (including me!) before the class to make sure we understood what a tuck was and to tell us where to go if we wanted to see her better. Abby also played Jesse McCartney in one of the classes, which kind of makes her automatically awesome. (Don't judge my poor taste in music, thanks.) Jessica- My other favorite! She's so fun and she really makes sure that you're doing each move correctly. Plus she really helped me with my tuck - the "pulling up your zipper" phrase really helped. And she's the one that tends to introduce new moves (at least to me) in class. So awesome. Lauren - My third favorite! She's just a really great teacher. I always had fun in her class - and she's always smiling and has tips for getting into certain moves. And she always demonstrated each move so I wasn't too confused (as I would be if I just listened to instructions). Shari - Super spunky & always high energy. I always felt like I needed coffee before her class, just to be able to be on the same energy level as her. Meghan - Really great at helping you adjust if you're doing it wrong. And at demonstrating each move. Overall - I really enjoyed going to Pure Barre, and I thought it was a great way to get introduced to barre. Also, Union Square PB spoiled me - I visited one of the DC PB studios and was like "What?! No free tampons or facial wash or bobby pins or hair ties or spray-on deodorant or dry shampoo?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PLACE." (Yes, Union Square Pure Barre has all of this stuff in its bathroom. So it basically has everything except a shower.) If I had a more set schedule, I would've signed up for a yearly subscription - but I never know when I"ll have to be at or leave the office, so I'll just wait for my slow-ish season to start. read more

I purchased a class pack, and when checking my account online I realized that the Union Square location had charged classes to my pack--for a day when I wasn't even in New York. When I brought this to the attention of the management, they told me they couldn't do anything because the pack had expired. They totally missed the point that any time they charge a client erroneously, it's their responsibility to resolve it. Also: What kind of system do they have if it's that easy for them to make a mistake in which account they bill something to? Overall, I'm very disappointed in the level of customer service at Pure Barre in NYC. read more

I think it would be a great workout if I understood what the instructor was telling us to do. I've been taking Pilates, yoga, and barre classes for years...I've never spent such a confused hour. There was a lot of direction to "lift" without specifying what we are lifting. There were few corrections. Worse, the instructor did not model the exercises, or did so for such a short period of time it was hard to see her. I'm stuck with a $150 trial month I bought before my first class, so I'll keep with it. Maybe another instructor can teach me the correct form so I don't waste another hour. But than the (lack of) instruction was not the worst part of my morning. That honor goes to the airline-inspired extra charges for...everything. Want a sip of water? There's no fountain, but they'll sell you a bottle. Forget socks? $13. Apparently, their socks are made of unicorns. Finally, the studio smells like the carpet has been steeping in the sweat of random strangers for decades without a proper cleaning. Which surely has. read more

I took a class here this evening and had a great workout. Upon exiting the elevator I was greeted by the receptionist and the instructor of the class that I was taking. Both were super friendly. The space: there's only 1 studio, 3 dressing rooms, 1 bathroom (no shower), and a area with electronic cubbies (to hold your purse. They're super small so that's all that they can really hold). The class: was great and went by so fast! There were around 17 people in the class with just enough room for all of us move around without hitting each other. There weren't any surprise moves - most barre classes are essentially the same..... My only complaint is that the studio (workout room) smelled.....like sweat and feet.....I've taken barre classes at other boutiques and their rooms never smelled. They need to seriously air this room out throughout the day - as in crack a window and freeze for a little while so the funk can flow out! read more

Pure Barre has been a staple in my workouts for the past several years (see review of PB-Huntington Beach), and this studio would be a terrific one for anyone start or continue the Berk method. Almost every single instructor is sweet and cheerful, but these are the ones that have stood out to me. They teach at both the UWS and Union Square studios. Kaitlin. I'm partial to Kaitlin's classes, though they are definitely easier than the others. Sometimes they feel like throwback classes (using exercises PB used considerably a couple years back, but have since largely been replaced with more complicated movements) - IN A GOOD WAY. Her classes are simple, yet you very much feel the burrrrn, as long as you do the moves correctly. She introduces herself warmly to each and every client, enunciates like a pro (so we don't get the chance to get confused and lose our tuck because we're looking around), and just holds a very zen vibe throughout the class. I'm into it. Shari: spunkalicious and enterprising, and her classes reflect that. Sometimes she even sounds like a 5 year old making airplane and dinosaur noises - "aaaand squeeeeeeze your abs in like someone's PUNCHING you in the STOMACH". It's great. She talks crazy fast, but the energy in her class is through the roof, and she doesn't let you get away with *anything*. Meredith. Like a gentle but scrupulous daaahnce teacher, Meredith takes time to focus on each client at various times in the class, pushing you to the next level. Sometimes her icy stare can be intimidating - like she'll straight up stand 6 inches from your face to make sure your elbows don't drop below shoulder height, for example - but it's all for the best, amirite?, and ultimately she's quite the sweetheart. Brett. What is all the hype with Ms Barash? The one class I took with her wasn't particularly vigorous or avant-garde, and she exuded a slightly apathetic vibe, believe it or not. Could've been that one evening, who knows. I should come back to another one of her classes before I really judge. Rebecca. Did she snort coke before class? She talks a mile a minute in an insanely high pitched voice, and provides little to no corrections yet is for some reason always frantically scurrying about the room. Alana: Dull and uninterested, Alana provided zero corrections even when my neighbors or I were blatantly doing it wrong. Her descriptions of the movements were extremely vague, and unfortunately she made no attempts ever to clarify for the class what she had meant. I know that all PB teachers basically say the same things in class, even the same analogies (squeeze the ball flat like a pancake, like your highest set of heels, straight like a stick), but homegirl was legit reciting the script like a bored 10th grader. That's no way to lift/tone/burn... If I didn't mention a teacher (Cori, Laurel, Meghan, etc) it means they're fantastic but didn't make my top 3 (or the bottom 2). Regardless of the teacher, really, PB is a great workout and will produce results if you do it properly. I don't care to shower on the premises, but I do wish this studio had a mirrored area in the back locker room to swipe on some sunscreen & mascara after class without having to wait in line for the "pure potty". read more

I was one of those who could never understand why people would pay so much $$$$ for barre classes, but now I completely and 100% understand. I have become a Pure Barre addict. Is there a support group I can go to?? I've tried Physique, Bar Method and Pure Barre and of the three, Pure Barre is my absolute favorite. Each studio has their own style (noted below for those who struggle between which studio to try), is between 55-60 minutes, and is similarly structured where they focus on arms / shoulders, glutes, seat and abs. 1. Physique - Very fast paced. This class is for those who want to feel like they're working out in a club, have their heart race at capacity all of class, and get a good sweat going. It is a very cardio and strength intensive class. Sometimes the routines and its transitions were so fast that I felt like I didn't have proper form or didn't perform each exercise long enough to get the "shakes". Hence why, from my opinion, I worried about bulking 2. Bar Method - Slow paced. This class is for those who want a more calm and slow paced environment (I equate this studio's ambience to the lobby of a nice spa), and one that is strength focused. If you aren't a sweater, you won't sweat here, but don't let that fool you. You are still getting a good workout! This studio also incorporates a lot more stretching exercises to elongate the body As for Pure Barre, I feel like it's a great mixture of the other two studios in that it's primarily strength focused with a little cardio. There are some stretching exercises, but not as frequent as Bar Method. The routines comprise of a lot of small, subtle movements that are long enough where you get the "shakes" but not too long where you are too exhausted to complete the whole routine. I feel like I get the most out of this studio. For instructors, I love Rebecca, Lauren and Megan because they take the time to teach you proper form, fix your form and keep the energy and motivation going during class. The only downside to this studio is that 1) there's no locker room - e.g. showers (there are bathrooms and stalls for you to change at though and wet naps), 2) 12 hour notice to cancel class and 3) there is only one class going on in this studio at each hour which means classes get booked fast. You have to be pretty on top of reserving classes. Other than that, those are small nuances for an otherwise awesome studio!! read more

I bought a Gilt City 10 pack of classes. But I've never done a barre workout before so I wasn't sure what to expect or if I'd be able to handle it. So I inquired to find out if they did private training sessions so that I could meet with an instructor one-on-one before embarking on my class package. From what I've heard/read about barre workouts, they can be intense and you really need to use the correct techniques and postures, not only to maximize the benefits of each move but to ensure that you don't hurt yourself by doing things incorrectly. I have a bad back and bad knees so I'm always very careful before trying out a new workout or fitness regime that I am fully informed of the program and what it entails so that I can make sure that I take care of my knees and back and don't do myself any harm or injury. I went for a private training session this past Saturday at the Union Square location with Meaghan C. She was fantastic. Very energetic and a ray of sunshine on a chilly day. I had just spent the previous 6 and a half hours attending a lecture uptown so I honestly wasn't feeling up to working out when I got there. But once I stepped into the studio, it was very clean and well-lit and has a great sound system with great music. And Meaghan was there and smiling and very warm and welcoming, so even though my energy level wasn't all that high, her positive attitude and the energy she radiated definitely helped me feel better. So after briefly explaining the layout of the studio to me, I changed and met her inside and we spent the next hour going through what a typical workout would be like. She was great. She did all the exercises with me, pointing out all the little things I should know and emphasizing all the proper posture and techniques. Making little adjustments and corrections as we went on. I made sure to tell her of my back and knees issues and she was absolutely fantastic in breaking down all the moves and offering various modifications on each move to ensure that I didn't tax my lower back and that I didn't hurt my knees. The workout is very challenging! At least for me. I was super sore the next day and I wasn't able to keep up with some of the moves but Meaghan assured me that if I kept up with it that in time I'd get stronger and more fit and be able to keep up with the pace and intensity of the classes. But she also said that it was totally fine to make modifications and go a little slower/easier if necessary on certain moves until I built up my strength. She was just very encouraging and she made the whole process less intimidating. I enjoyed my time with Meaghan and will probably see her again for more private training. But in the meantime I am looking forward to my classes now that I know what to expect. It is a great and challenging full body workout. Lastly, one of the owners Kaitlin called me to follow-up right away the following weekday to make sure that I had a good session and find out how everything was. I appreciated her taking the time to call me to make sure I was ok and happy with how everything went. She was great and very enthusiastic about my great experience with Meaghan. I am looking foward to continuing on at Pure Barre and will post an update after some of my classes. read more

I hate working out. But I've become addicted to PureBarre. I got an introductory offer of $150 for one month of unlimited classes. The first class was hard but felt good. The second one was hell. The third and fourth I felt like I was getting the hang of it and I'm already noticing how much better I feel and that I'm getting slightly stronger (speaking as someone who has zero flexibility and upper body strength!) The atmosphere is super friendly and not intimidating, which I really appreciated - both staff and clients, it feels like everyone's there to get stronger and not to show off or make you feel like you're hopeless. This is probably the first exercise program ever that I could stick to. I also really like the online booking system which really helps you commit to going and plan classes around your super busy New York life. The ONLY downside - the exorbitant prices. I can't see how I'll ever be able to afford going even twice a week, which I think is probably a good amount, so one star off for that :( Update: Brett Barash is a really great teacher, if you're trying to pick a class here! read more

I have tried a few different barre classes using Class Pass, and even a few different Pure Barre studios. To be honest, I was much more a fan of Exhale (omg, so hard) than Bar Method or Pure Barre UNTIL I came to this studio. Teresa is definitely my favorite instructor. She's peppy (but not obnoxious), gives really clear demonstrations, and comes around and makes helpful (quiet) adjustments so that you really feel the burn. In the other Pure Barre class that I went to, the instructor did not stop to talk to newbies about the different lingo. Teresa really made sure to ask if anyone was new before class, to introduce herself one on one and explain "tucking" and the different Pure Barre terminology. She also asked about injuries and made really helpful modifications for people throughout class. I also love that her routines are a little bit different each time I take her class, so it never gets boring or mundane. If you are interested in barre class, definitely check out this studio, and make sure you take one of Teresa's classes! read more

Terrible experience! As a person who frequents group fitness class this was hands down the worst managed business I've seen. I was put on wait lists for classes without the studio notifying that they not only charge for no shows, but also for being on the wait list! Checked my account to find $80 of charges that the studio fought me on refunding saying it was their right to charge bc they are allowed to add you to a class minutes until the start time. As someone who frequents Soul Cycle I'm very familiar with cancellation policies, but never have I seen a business run this way. I paid for the $150 trial and I was so upset by the way I was treated I won't go back. Save your money and go to Physique57 or The Bar Method, much better studios! read more

I highly recommend Pure Barre Edgewater. They have created a really friendly, supportive environment. Your first class is directed towards teaching you how Pure Barre works, the flow of most classes, getting you comfortable with the movements, etc. All the instructors I've taken classes with have been great--upbeat, kind, helpful if you're struggling at all. The classes are all low-impact, with options for making it harder for yourself if you'd like. When I ran into a scheduling issue, they were responsive and helpful. If you're on the fence about trying Pure Barre, I recommend going for it. I certainly have no regrets! read more

Had a very positive experience at Pure Barre. This location is a block from my apartment and I always walk by it. Finally got to check it out through classpass! I attended a 5:45a class with Jamie, who was very encouraging. She started the class by making sure she knew everyone's name and setting expectations for any newcomers. Throughout the class, she walked around making minor adjustments to form. Occasionally it was hard to know exactly what to do since she demos very briefly (I often found myself looking around trying to find her amongst the rest of the class) and the movements are so minute. I feel like they say classes are ok for beginners, but I'm always clearly struggling (not just the shaking they want you to have) and I'm ignored by the instructors. I also feel like this location has really bad facilities. No showers, only one bathroom and super narrow hallways where the lockers are. Out of purebarre, the bar method, exhale and physique this is by far my least favorite. read more

Pure barre is very different from other barre class. Focus on more small movements of your body, which in a ways it's harder. It's really challenging for me as I'm not good as sensing my body parts. It's really good though! read more

Pure Barre is a great studio and workout. The instructors are amazing. I am not a person that works out at all. However with Pure Barre I have found a place I can workout while having fun and feel comfortable. They all make you feel very welcome and they help you out. The routine goes quickly and it takes a while to pick it up and even then they always find knew moves to make you shake. The workout is intense for me without killing my joints or causing me severe pain like other gyms and classes. I do feel the burn and walk slower after but Pure Barre does not leave me bed-ridden which I appreciate. With the help of Pure Barre I have lost 36lbs. The location is nice and big. I personally like their Columbus Circle studio but I like that they have another studio especially when their classes fill up so quickly. read more

I have meaning to write this review and was very excited to write it because of my new found love for Pure Barre. I started PB in October with a 1-month unlimited new member package and liked it but not enough to go back. Then I tried The Bar Method for 1 month - just so I could compare the 2 and finally pick my choice. After comparing the 2 I just wanna say- PURE BARRE WINS BY A MILLION- so i decided to go back again and things have changed since October (I NOW LOVE IT) the exercises are a lot harder but better and all in all the place improved for the better. I am in love with Pure Barre because as a hater of Cardio exercises this place does exactly what needs to be done.. and boy let me tell you ... YOU SEE RESULTS... oh yes.. off course (as long as your are eating fairly healthy and maybe doing some cardio on the side) I am fully addicted to Pure Barre so I would try to go atleast 6 times a week because I loved it so much.. I never got bored of the exercises because every class in itself was a challenge for your mind and body which is why I love PB soo much. As far as the teachers go... I love them all. they are extremely nice,sweet, down to earth instructors with such good energy -Shout out to the teachers classes I took (Meaghan Cleary, Megan Starr, Shari Katz, Danielle Mooney, Jessica Spear) that it makes me want to go back over and over, Unlike the Bar Method, that had 1 or 2 of the snotty teachers. Each teacher has her own style of teaching and off course some are more tough than others but I will admit that there is not one teacher that I can say was bad (at all.) The teachers are always there to help you, although I feel like there could be a little more correction at times, they do there best with trying to modify as many students as they can. I really do love PURE BARRE and recommend it if your looking to shed a few inches. read more
