I sent my son to this daycare for 4 days and had a less than pleasant experience. Back at the end…read moreof March, I contacted the owner. She had expressed that she has experience with children that fall under the Autism Spectrum. I thought that would be a great fit as son was to be evaluated for possibly being on the spectrum. We met at length, and later signed a contract to send him there for the summer. Once school started, my son would be given before and after school care. We brought my son there a day in May to get acquainted and meet some of the other kids. There was no cause for concern then. On the first day, my husband and son were greeted with a less than enthusiastic demeanor. I overlooked it being first thing in the morning. That afternoon I picked my son up, I was handed a print out of a handbook page to amend what we already signed a contract for. It was a shock that it said in bold print that she could terminate care for any reason at any time. I'm well aware a contract can be terminated for non payment or safety issues (for other children and the childcare provider), but not blindly for just any reason. The only indication of any challenges with our son is that he was difficult for breakfast a couple days, and that he was stubborn to pick up toys, and even cried for a bit. He was given cold cereal and oatmeal. My son is just picky about the texture, and I told her about that. I said he will eat anything else for breakfast as it is his favorite meal of the day. The only other issue was that he refused to pick up toys and that he got upset crying. I suggested a typical of idea of putting him in time out to remedy the situation. What really surprised me is that she said that she only puts a child in time out under extreme circumstances. Fine, that is a different point of view, but still a red flag. The biggest issue I have is that she only gave him 4 days, and was aware of him possibly being on the spectrum, pending official diagnosis. I didn't even get a chance yet to fill out a special needs form, while waiting for the diagnosis. One of the common traits being on the spectrum is a child needing time to adjust to change. That is the case with my son. After the encounter on the last day, my husband and I discussed that we were not comfortable in sending our son back there. When I reached out to agree that my son would not return, I was promptly given a refund for the week ahead that I had already paid. In the end, I am happy we could send my son back to his original daycare, but this abrupt change caused logistical concerns and more planning for the upcoming school year. That could have been planned better if the owner was up front about the contract changes before he started. We would have never sent our son there in the first place, given the blunt wording in updated handbook. As it stands now, I'm glad things happened now, and not any later to make planning for school harder. At least my son is back where he is comfortable.
