I've been a student here for 4 years, and I graduate in 3 weeks. This school is so awful, that I'm not even walking for graduation because I don't even want to come back to the campus to do so.
I dormed here for 3 semesters. The freshmen dorms do not have air conditioning. Or a light fixture. Or wireless internet. You have to bring your own lamps, routers, and fans. Heat may come on in 80 degree weather and stay off when it's below freezing. Who Knows? Obviously not SUNY Purchase and their awful conditions for students. The dorms are also dated and filthy, and don't expect everything to be in working order either. I had broken blinds when I moved in, put in a work order, and was billed at the end of the semester anyways.
Now lets move on to the campus itself. Roughly a 15 minute drive from white plains, it is not remotely close to ANYTHING else except a liquor store in Connecticut. Probably the reason that everyone on campus is ab alcoholic. And there's also zero to do in White Plains at all. Like literally nothing except go to overpriced restaurants, or stay at a hotel. Yeah, it's got a train to Manhattan, except you either have to pay for parking, or wait for Purchase College's joke of a transportation system, "The Loop" which is notorious for coming late, leaving early, not showing up at all, and reckless drivers. The architecture of the campus is: Brick. Brick. Brick. pretty much all bricks, with a few scattered abstract sculptures, probably built by underpaid students. It's super gloomy and depressing, and the fact that it's literally NEXT DOOR to an airport only increases the feeling that this is not a SUNY school, but a prison on an air force base. Seriously. It's so bad that I decided to commute from an hour and a half away rather than dorm there for another semester.
The disciplinary system is also a joke, and they allow known sexual predators to remain on campus because the hypermasculine GI Joe state troopers that patrol the campus with AR-15's in their squad cars are more concerned with people going 2 (yes two) miles per hour over the speed limit, instead of people with multiple accusations of sexual assault. Seriously, the college just puts them on probation and shakes a finger at them.
Now on to the academics:
A lot of the professors are dedicated to what they do. Unfortunately, tenure allows many to remain at the college long after they have overstayed their welcome. I had one professor who openly mocked the disabled, and another who legally had to allow me to make up a midterm as I was serving in the army national guard and was called in on a Friday, which is not uncommon and he was made aware of this in the beginning of the semester, yet he told me if I didn't make it in, I would fail the course with no exceptions. The only reason I was able to get around this is because my advisor was fantastic, and the only reason I'm actually going to graduate from this college. Overall out of the 5 or so different sections I've covered, the professors are the only ones id rate higher than one star, as many of them in the journalism and history programs are qualified to do what they do. However, many gen ed professors either don't care at all or care too much. The mandatory science classes are rigorous as were the spanish ones, and then the Legal classes were a whole joke- easier than what I took in high school. I'd give the academics of this school a 3/5.
Oh and one more department- the technology of this school- they use this program called "Moodle" which is like an online hub for coursework- except most professors either don't use it at all and rely on emails, and the ones that do use it have never been taught how to, and completely jumble up everything on there, leading to missed deadlines and incorrectly completed assignments. The servers are also down pretty often, what actually prompted this review was me not being able to access my email account which I desperately need to communicate with the students in my class as a TA, and to email stuff for my senior project which is due in a week or so.
TL;DR- do not attend this college if you want to learn something, live in a comfortable environment, not be harassed by militarized police, live near civilization, or have any sort of modern technology like air conditioning or working internet. Seriously, don't go here. read more
