You will be disappointed…read more I have no doubt that students get a stellar education and an "incandescent learning experience" at any of the various Columbia Medical Schools. To work here, however, that's a whole another story. Let me start by saying that I loved my colleagues: a lot of cutting edge, exciting scientific discoveries happen every day here, and there's a climate of collegiality and collaboration that I really enjoyed. The real problems are with the support staff; that is, with people who are paid to help me do my work[1]. For example: when we first moved into a new state-of-the-art research center[2], my bay was without heating. We moved into the new space in October; in May the following year the plant operation staff finally showed up to discover that, during the renovations, they forgot to install a heating unit. Our darkroom would often break down/flood[3]. There is an emergency number to call for any issues concerning the darkroom. Too bad nobody ever (like, never ever!) picks up the phones, returns calls, or even check their voicemail. When I tried to politely bring the issue up with the administration, this is the reply I had from Ed Johnson, Department Administrator for the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics: "I am fully aware of what problems we had the room and I don't need to constantly reminded of them.". Wow... At the beginning of last year I was without salary and health insurance for 3 months. That's right: 3 months! My boss submitted all the documentations for the renewal of my contract in September; comes January I get COBRA documents in the mail, and immediately realize that something is wrong. The administration at the Pathology Department then asks my boss for all the documents again, and it takes 3 full months before the situation is rectified. Meanwhile nobody could give me a clear answer as if it was even legal for me to work there without a contract, or if I had medical coverage in case of an accident[4]. I could go on and on, but you get the picture. Any concern you may have is met with incompetence at best and indifference at worst at most, if not all, administrative levels, making doing your daily job here extremely frustrating. Moreover, nobody cares, and nobody is held responsible for any of these chronic, structural problems with Columbia administration. The motto attached in front of a couple of buildings reading "Amazing things are happening here" should read instead "Amazing: things are happening here!". --------------- [1] Except the two main administrators in the Center where I worked, who are simply awesome! In fact, they provided enormous help and support in clearing out a lot of the mess generated higher up in the administrative hierarchical chain. [2] They renovated lab space, but forgot about the bathrooms. Let's just say that, when we have potential donors visiting the center, one has to pray that they don't need to use the bathroom. I even saw a guy washing his feet in the bathroom sink. Twice. Check them out: P&S building, 5th floor. A true gem. [3] We're talking about toxic chemicals kind of flooding, here. In a room with no windows. [4] Having to deal every day with, among other things, toxic chemicals, biohazard waste, and radioactive material, this is a major concern.

I only say this because I've been a patient at a few different locations in the last few months and have not had the most pleasant time dealing with some of the staff. This is surprising to me considering all medical and support staff have to suffer through classes that are supposed to help improve interaction with patients, making them feel more important and less like cattle. I'm unaware if everyone has gone through the appropriate training and I'm sure they need to offer some refreshers because some of the staff I've encountered have been less than professional until I flash my ID badge so that they realize that I can hold them accountable. I often dread some of my appointments because I know I'll most likely be dealing with front desk personnel that will partake in inappropriate conversation at the desk whole people wait or just not take into account HIPAA regulations and patient privacy. It is what it is and that's way we have surveys. Please fill them out and send them back. Departments definitely take them seriously and strive to make changes.

With the exception of maybe one bad apple, all professors were clear and helpful in class and during office hours, as well as with internships and jobs. Everyone was receptive to both positive and constructive feedback. While I was on a satellite campus in Kip's Bay, I had access to some good and reasonably priced restaurants, and some nice parks, during study breaks. However, the building could have offered better internet access and more of a variety of snacks, however I still was able to get all of my work done prior to classes, as well as attend research presentations to network. I ordered the book on Amazon and I've read it three times. One of my favorite parts of SEP is part on Aristotelian world of shadows in the cave. SO DRAMATIC! Tragedy aND COMEdy at once, a perfect word. Prof Cyrus teaches about politics. Who to vote for? You might wonder, Pof. knows! Democrat, neoliberal, marks, capital, angles, you will learn it all. HUMAN RIGHTS!? Forget em'. Only problem with this excellente prof. Is handwriting too small. Can't see tiny letters on the chalkboard, and even smaller when he writes on paper. Maybe because of his tiny hands? Hard to tell if its "o" or "a" a lot. Locker Up! And I'll see u in class 101!

I attended Manhattan University (then Manhattan College) as an undergraduate approximately two…read moreyears ago, after being enrolled at the institution four years prior. During my time there, I was required to take a religious studies course taught by a professor who demonstrated a clear ideological bias. When I respectfully disagreed with her philosophical views, she responded by mocking me and ostracizing me in front of the class, using her authority as a professor to do so. After this behavior escalated, I disengaged from class participation. After I did this, the professor abruptly left the lecture. After she came back, she asked me to stay after class. During that conversation, I stated that I believed the situation warranted getting the dean involved. The dean told me that I should apologize to the professor regardless of whether I was right or wrong, which I did. The professor was not held to the same standard. A week later, I was given the opportunity to be transferred out of the course mid-semester. I found this unprofessional and disruptive, but I agreed to do so because the environment no longer felt safe or conducive to learning. The replacement course required me to complete all missed coursework independently, placing the burden of the situation entirely on me. This experience reflected a broader pattern I observed at the institution, a lack of concern for students well being and a tendency to treat students as obstacles to administrative efficiency rather than individuals. Based on my cumulative experiences, I would strongly caution prospective students to consider other options.

The alter is from the original St Patrick's Cathedral, and the stained glass windows were made in France for St Patricks, but due to a measurement error they were given to Fordham. The wedding mass was beyond lovely.
