We have all seen a meme or heard the adage that the best places for tacos are in the baddest…read moreneighborhoods. Well, Super Mercado Las Americas in Columbus, Georgia is a great example that that particular trend of good tacos in not so good neighborhood. The restaurant is located in the back of a time worn market. The furnishings, plates, knives and forks are all bargain basement or dollar store quality and the market is located next door to a place that sells new and used tires. But the food, as the memes and adage imply, is solid. I definitely have had better, but this place produces a fine product. I found the tacos better than the pupusa in the full entrees look pretty good, as well. Service is friendly, but I would not say that it is very professional. It appears to be more that they brought in family and friends to run food out to you. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it bears mentioning. All in all, this was a great stop for lunch.

Having grown up in Los Angeles, I can offer my expertise. The tacos are alright, with massive toppings piled on open-faced tortillas. The thinly-sliced radishes, cotija cheese, and street corn slaw are highlights! But the chicken isn't the best quality, the pickled onions completely disappear, and the chicken mole poblano taco doesn't have a hint of poblano nor mole. The mayonnaise on the street corn on the cob is far too overwhelming. The mayo should be a lot more subtle, or replaced by Mexican or Salvadoran crema as we do at our house. So the end result is corn that would never compete with the best elote in Los Angeles. All that said, it's a decent stop if you want Mexican food in the Deep South and don't have any sort of expertise in Latin cuisine.
