By no means am I a chocolate connoisseur - meaning that, frankly, you stick candy in front of me, I'll eat it. I know what I like and what I don't, but that's about as far as it goes. One of my colleagues surprised me with a box of the sea salt caramels recently and I wrote him an email that read like this: "Mother of God. These chocolates are amazing. Thank you so much...I want to hate you for introducing me to these, but they are so good, I can't." That pretty much sums it up. I don't even want to try anything else because I'm not sure that it can get any better than those sea salt caramels. They are little pieces of confectionery heaven and I'd go to church if they were served for communion. read more

This candy shop is an encouraging reminder that there are still small, local, family-run companies that take enormous pride in their work, have a great product and give superb customer service. Puopolo Candies is one such shop where the delicious assortment of chocolates and candies are almost all made on site and are made by hand. To shop here means you are dealing directly with the owners and candy makers. This is not at all like purchasing a box of chocolates from a corporation such as the one that owns Godiva...ugh. These are made from all natural flavorings and ingredients and no preservatives. You can get all the choices in either milk or dark chocolate. If you're in a rush you can pick up a pre-made up box but I think it's infinitely more fun to make up your own assortment. It's the grown-up version of going to the corner candy store and picking out your bag of penny candy choices. I'm not sure I can pick just one favorite here because I love just about everything but the chocolate bark with cranberries and pistachios comes to mind as does the buttercrunch. When I'm here, I'm pleasantly reminded of the service in local village shops in Italy where even the smallest purchase is often given great care by being wrapped nicely in pretty paper. Similarly, at Puopolo the staff will box and wrap and ribbon whatever it is you're buying. The result is that you feel great walking out of here with your delicious and pretty chocolate treasures whether it's for you or for a gift. You can have special orders made up too so just tell them what you're thinking about doing with chocolate and they'll help you execute your desire. I love this shop and the people who work here. Making chocolates by hand is an art and Puopolo does it beautifully and tastefully. read more

I love the chocolate but the service has been horrible lately. The website is not updated, the selection in the store is horrible, and the hours are not convenient. When I go to the store there is no selection and I have stopped visiting my favorite place for chocolate. read more

I never expected to have the opportunity to review these chocolates. I read Alexandra's review w/ vicarious pleasure and imagined their taste, but don't anticipate going to Massachusetts anytime soon. Alexandra surprised me. She and I were discussing books and she offered to send me the Tracy Kidder book she was reading when she finished it, an offer I happily accepted. A few weeks later the package arrived and inside was not only the book, but a beautifully wrapped box of assorted chocolates, chosen, I know, by Alexandra herself. This was no standard assortment. There were turtles in milk and dark chocolate, there was dark chocolate bark w/ cranberries and pistachios and an occasional note of salt. There was something like peanut butter enrobed in milk chocolate and something w/ a liquid center I couldn't identify. There was a milk chocolate covered piece that reminded me of the slender, chocolate covered honeycombs that came in threes in the See's box and a dark chocolate covered piece, sprinkled w/ crushed almonds, that reminded me of the See's English toffee my dad used to buy for my mom for special occasions, except that was milk chocolate. This was in the days when See's was a small local concern rather than a conglomerate. And there were dark chocolate covered dried apricots. What an assortment! I couldn't write a review until I had tasted everything and I dole good chocolates out sparingly, so it took a while. I loved everything. Dark chocolate is my favorite, but I like milk chocolate too. There was no white chocolate, which I don't recognize as chocolate anyway and won't eat. If I had to choose a favorite it would be the chocolate bark, which was so complex and interesting. It was like a celebration in my mouth. There is a second piece of the bark I'm saving for last, another quirky habit of mine. This was a wonderful gift and I have taken great pleasure in it, almost as much pleasure as I have taken in our blossoming friendship. read more

I don't write reviews too often, but this chocolate is beyond amazing. I highly suggest the salted Carmel chocolate- it is one of the best chocolates that I have ever had- and I eat a whole lot of candy! I have only received this company's product as a gift but I do look forward to stopping by the store at some point. I've been a faithful client for 10 years and based on the amount of chocolate I've purchased, I should weigh 500 lbs! Simply stepping inside the store is enough to make your mouth water, the aroma is fantastic. My monthly visits are actually for dark chocolate business cards that Richard pours only to order for me. Upon Debbie Puoplolo's suggestion, we had a mold made of our logo and the cards are a hit wherever i go. Everyone asks where i got the chocolate, which is fine, but it's not usually because of the novelty; Rather it's the quality of the product. I have been eating their chocolates since I was a little girl growing up in Hingham, and I always looked forward to a box for big holidays...birthdays, Christmas, Valentine's, Easter.
