They seem to have gotten over, or gotten past some previous biased treatment of non-White teens or at least the man working the counter doesn't share those regrettable values. I'm not sure the sense of humor required for this shop will be understandable to those under 50, but it might be fun to try some intergenerational shopping. Very tight, don't wear a knapsack in here, or if you do, try to be very careful when you turn around. Park out in front, eat at Katy's Dumplings, stop by here on the way back to the car. Or, if you live in the Chicago area, take the train, this is right by the Oak Park downtown stop. read more

Really fun, amusing, and unique toys and gifts for kids & teens, maybe up to young adult. I buy cards, fridge magnets and some books for myself, too. My kids love all the tiny treasures and fidgets. It's a tightly packed space so can get a bit smushy-feeling if super crowded so I try to visit during the weekday when it is quieter. Staff is always super friendly. Seems like they enjoy being there and that always makes for a positive shopping experience. Metered surface lot parking can be tricky to score but there is a village parking garage about a 3-block walk. So many neat little shops & restaurants on the Marion Street mall too so give yourself some time to walk around. read more

My daughter spent $10 on a blind bag Toki Doki yesterday. Low and behold it was defective, it was missing the hair. She tried to return it but the staff refused. The thing that made it worse was that they knew about the current defect, and still continue to sell these blind bags. Very sad that this business would do something like this. Not a good way to get return customers. read more

Uncle Fun, you've got competition! Pumpkin Moon in charming downtown Oak Park, is a great little store for old timey toys, Elvis memorabilia, adult birthday cards and campy fun, super balls, magic tricks, magnets, wind up toys, vintage-style robots, t-shirts, and everything in between. I regret not visiting Pumpkin Moon before St. Nick's Day, because it's perfect for cheap stocking stuffers for kids, and the kid in us all. Parking in the public lot at North and Marion is easy, and I'll certainly be back for birthdays and for stocking stuffers next year! read more

Pumpkin Moon is, like other reviewers say, comparable to Uncle Fun in Lakeview. From novelty gifts to seasonal decorations, the store is packed with inexpensive (and a few not-so-inexpensive) items. Do you need Communist Breath Mints? They have you covered. Looking for a humorous or offbeat birthday card? They are in stock here. Did you just use up your last rubber chicken? Pumpkin Moon has three kinds. Don't even BOTHER shopping someplace else for things that look like poop but really aren't! Parking around here is usually pretty good. It's certainly cheaper and easier than parking in Lakeview, and there's a lot of other stuff to do in the area. It's a great place to kill time if you're early meeting somebody for lunch or don't feel like going home yet after your doctor appointment. Of course, I also love that the staff laughs at my jokes. One of the perks of shopping at a small local business over a chain is that they hire people who want to be there, and you don't have to deal with robo-clerks. Whether they are cackling along with me because I'm actually funny, or if it's more of a, "Wow, this lady is totally nuts" kind of thing is anybody's guess, but it's still nice to see a little life and personality. This shop has kid-friendly stuff but also more risque items, because again, they are independent and not mandated to stock or not stock things by a corporate board. This store is therefore not for squares, prudes, or people who think candies shaped like butts are offensive. The silly, the inane, and good-old fashioned nerds will feel right at home, though. read more

My sister is in love with this store. She described it as a toy store - a quirky one. I guess that's true, but I would describe it differently. I think it's a shop of gags and laughs: whoopee cushions, tins of breath mints inscribed with the words "Happy Pills," and Dr. Who figurines. The store is teeny tiny and cramped full of stuff. A lot of it is priced between a buck and $10. I went in for Christmas Stocking stuffers (like a tasteful tin of toilet seat covers) but ended up coming away with a great white elephant gift too! Get excited my friends - you might unwrap a package of bacon wonderland! That's right - among other bacon themed items, I got one lucky recipient a dashboard pig that appears to slice bacon from it's own midsection! You'll thank me later. The owner himself unlocked the door for me the blessed day that I went to Pumpkin Moon. He handed me a basket (that ended up getting filled up despite my original intention to only buy one or two items) and offered me help. He was friendly, but in a quiet sort of way. He told me about their new store (Scratch n Sniff) and the reason behind the name Pumpkin Moon (it comes from the star shape you get when cutting across the stem of a certain orange colored squash). I wish I had known about this store sooner. No. That's a lie. I knew about it but I didn't understand it. I wish I had grasped the glory of Pumpkin Moon sooner. Gosh, it could have saved me a frustrating Amazon dot com ordeal when trying to find glow-in-the-dark stars in August. read more

You can mingle with FL Wright tourist groups, the stroller brigade and the occasional visiting family. This is the place to go for strange silly gifts. I know that you were recently thinking...."Where can I purchase fart bombs, fake poop and a greeting card?" Here is your place. Things I have purchased for myself or other people at this store include (but are not limited to): Old fashion wind ups, a remake of an old school Robot toy, a slingshot that shoots little plastic babies, Obama action figure, super cool magnet sets for children, sticky notes/magnets/patches/stickers/notepads with ridiculously funny and inappropriate sayings and pictures, crazy books, old school toys, fart bombs...and so much more. They have really good greeting cards here if you are looking for a sarcastic alternative to Hallmark. It is always overcrowded with too many people but you can't leave without buying some kind of joke for one of your friends or family. The guy who owns the place is very friendly and his staff is too. So much fun. For ten years this is where I shopped for my husband's birthday and Christmas gift. He grew up on comics and cartoons so along with his very adult cigar I wrapped a comic t-shirt from Pumpkin Moon. Before heading for the t-shirts I always perused the shelves and smiled as I remembered Popeye, Betty Boop, blue tongue turning gum, soap tasting gum and Felix the Cat. There are lunch boxes, clocks, tattoos, postcards, calendars, watches, rings, posters and magnets. We're now separated, my husband and I. His birthday is coming up and though he didn't get me anything for mine, I'm thinking I'm going to have to go to Pumpkin Moon for him. I need a new Betty Boop key chain after all. My 800th review is dedicated to my little boy so of course, it's going to be for one of his favorite stores. Pumpkin Moon! We come for he superhero stuff. Others come for the superhero stuff too, but there's tons of other things that make this store fun. Dr. Who, T-shirts, magnets, playing cards, candy, gag gifts, lunchboxes, finger puppets, wind up toys, marbles...one can't simply list the inventory, you just have to experience it. PM is definitely for the young and young at heart. Last visits we stumbled upon some Green Lantern and Flash Pez dispensers-- are those even very popular superheroes? They are to my son so we scooped them up in a Flash (sorry). They also have some great light weight superhero T's that beat what we've found in big-box stores. They also have cute zip pouches and trinket boxes that made good stocking stuffers this past Christmas. Really there is too much to even talk about with this store, just go and experience it. It's a small, cramped shop, just keep walking around because you'll find something new each turn. Staffers are nice. It's downtown Oak Park, what's not to love? read more

This place is pretty awesome. They carry a lot of vintage toys and the prices weren't that bad. They had some t-shirts (ex. Superman, Hello Kitty, etc), practical joke items (ex. fake vomit), and toys. They didn't have a selection like Toys R Us, they have a selection more for those that grew up in the 70's and 80's era..... you know when you used your imagination when you played with your toys. I like the fact that the staff are very knowledgable and they will demonstrate so you know that what your buying really works. This is a great little toy shop right off the Harlem Green Line or Metra Oak Park Stop. Also in the heart of downtown Oak Park near plenty of reasonable parking (lot and metered). As far as toys go, everything from super kid friendly wind up toys, plushies, puzzles and coloring books to wacky and sometimes rare and pricey collectors items for the kid in all of us. They also have greeting cards (all kinds, even the evil kind that make you cackle and buy it anyway), pez dispensers, finger puppets, magnets, stickers, soaps, gag gifts, some candy, you could wander in that little place for an hour! The people that run the place are super friendly to boot, the kind of people you WANT to give your money because they truly love working there. And really, I often see stuff I spied online or in catalogs like ThinkGeek, Perpetual Kid, etc. but hey no shipping! Prices are very reasonable. You won't find much for under a dollar (though are are a few little things), but most of the stuff you get here isn't going to break before you get it home either. I particularly love some of the vintage lunch boxes, retro tin signs, things that remind me of when *I* was a kid. Definitely worth stopping in, if for nothing else but to be reminded of what it was like to be excited about a $3 wind up ninja toy or a bag of fake plastic poo. I was surprised by how many reviews Pumpkin Moon has on here already. I used to come here all the time just to peruse all the goodies. They have a ton of nostalgic toys and memorabilia in this store. Everyone is always super friendly and willing to help you find the perfect gift. They also have more current toys and "memorabilia" (I put that in quotes because I do not know what to call items from current TV shows and movies). I got my sister some Family Guy themed items here and I bought a girlfriend a cigarette extender... yes it is a very eclectic shop. I try to stop by every time I am in the Oak Park area... I stumbled on this fun little novelty shop after I took a wrong turn getting back to the Green Line, it drew me in right away with the crazy fun window display. This is one of those places for every age, gag gifts mixed in with clever insults, disgusting candy/food ideas, and hilarious accessories or gift cards. You can browse for quite a while, there is a wide variety of stuff, a lot of it that I have seen elsewhere but it is rare to find a place to find all of it at one time. read more

This place is awesome! If you're looking for entertainment in Oak Park, no matter how old you are, you will love this place. There's something for everybody in here. It seems like a children's store, but there are quite a few adult-humored items as well. I got all my nephew-to-be's Christmas presents from here this year and he loved everything! Also, if you're looking for something awesome from your child-hood (80s babies) you just might find it here. I did. I gifted one of those little plastic confetti wands to my niece-to-be and just like me when I was her age, it's now one of her favorite toys. I almost just bought one for myself... The only reason I give it a 4 instead of a 5 is the prices are a little steep and the store is a little crowded. Regardless of your age or humor, you should definitely try this place out. Never coming back. Followed throughout the whole store by the white female workers, despite the place being full. My friend and I were the only poc there. Made for a really, really uncomfortable shopping experience. Everywhere we turned, one of the workers was right behind us. Used to come here all the time as a kid and was never treated like this. This is a really great quirky store. They have a lot of classic movie merchandise like Star Trek for example and plenty of items that take a jab at politics. I'll admit what I bought, I bought a Star Trek coffee cup and vintage clock, both of which were pretty cool. Its a great place for very unique items, I've bought Elvis stuff there for my mom and she loved it. Shame on the owner of this store. Was just in there shopping and witnessed her harassing a group of black teens. She had been following them around the whole time they were there, and when they left decided to show her implicit bias. She followed them out and accused them of stealing. She herself said she had no proof and hadn't seen them taking anything (per what she said to another employee and customer). However, because they were people of color and young men she had this pull to accuse them. For contrast, a group of white teen girls were in the store at the same time and she did not feel the need to follow them. I understand shoplifting is a real issue for small business owners, but teenage girls are just as likely to shoplift as anyone else. read more

There's plans in the making for a Pig Off in Hong Kong and they needed the pigs to roll. I know they make them there, but can anybody find them? China is a BIG place... So, Pumpkin Moon to the rescue. I know it's weird, but what's a poor gal to do? I brought 16 at .65 cents each. When looking for oddities that the American Science store doesn't carry - Pumpkin Moon is the place - however, a bit pricey - still you just have to be looking for just the right thing and hopefully the price will be right. read more

Pumpkin Moon used to be more unique when they first moved into this spot. Now, there are a lot of items inside that you can find elsewhere - but not within the immediate area, so it is still worth a trip. The place is a bit small, creating a lot of traffic jams amongst patrons, but the toys and gadgets put people in a good mood, so it is an overall positive experience. read more

This is a really cool little shop. It's basically a shop full of vintage toys and gag gifts. If you grew up in the 80s or earlier, you'll probably see a lot of stuff that reminds you of your childhood. Prices are pretty decent there. They also have some really funny books as well that would be great to read after a hard day to get your mood up. A fun shop, and very few like it are out there, so if you're in the Oak Park area and you like vintage toys and gag gifts, I would highly recommend checking this place out! read more
