The Pulaski Bridge, crossing Newtown Creek, connects Brooklyn to Queens on a surface street. The significance of the bridge is not that of a beautiful structure, which it isn't. Its draw instead is in the historical significance of the area it crosses. Having spent much time staying in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens, I became fascinated with the early history of the area. Although the area has become massively gentrified in recent years, the longtime residents of LIC who haven't been priced out are proud of their area's history. Much historical information is available, including early use of the creek by the Dutch settlers. The creek & its tributaries weren't always polluted waterways. The Indigenous Peoples that first lived on the land found it a vibrant source of food and transportation before Dutch explorers claimed the land in the early 1600's. Dutch settlers also looked to it for travel, food & water. The tributary now known as Dutch Kills has significance for me because of my love of history. While spending time in the area now known to many as Dutch Kills, I purchased a Dutch Kills shirt. A bodega across from where I stayed posted pages of history near its cash register. A close pub was named for it. Dutch Kills was well known then & historically cherished. The area has changed a lot in recent years with expansion of the gentrification beyond the LIC waterfront. I hope its history isn't lost to time & "progress". The bridge & its surrounding area have a Revolutionary War history. The bridge itself is named for Polish Revolutionary War Commander Pulaski, since early settlers of the adjoining Greenpoint neighborhood in Brooklyn were Polish. The British tributary is called British Kills. The area was the a headquarters for the British troops. The troops were housed in the Dutch Kills section of LIC I know so well. So when you cross the Pulaski Bridge that you've traveled so routinely in the past, don't think of it as a small ordinary bridge. Think instead of the history of the area it crosses. No toll! It's a short bridge that goes between Long Island City in Queens to Greenpoint Brooklyn. I like walking across the bridge too. I see people running across as well. The path is narrow just fyi There is a separate path for people who are biking across the bridge. A good option if you don't want to take the G train subway from Queens to Brooklyn. read more

Another bridge. It isn't much to look at, but some views are okay. Pulaski Bridge connects Brooklyn and Queens. Basically it goes over Newtown Creek. This does have a pedestrian walkway. A bridge that isn't that much of a tourist attraction. It seems many people are interested in the city's bridges. This is one they don't care about much. Architecturally others are much more impressive. This one connects Greenpoint and Long Island City, which are just across from each other. Basically the area is pretty ugly with a lot of factories. Over to the west you can see some of Manhattan. It doesn't cost anything to drive across. This is too small to justify a toll. It has a walkway on the west side. This has bicycle lanes and pedestrian lanes, and doesn't get a whole lot of either, but it's tight. It doesn't have much room to get around others. This is okay for pictures. I can't get excited about walking across this bridge. It just seems kind of lame. There's a nice park at the end of the bridge in Queens so that's one good thing. read more

This bridge connects Brooklyn to Queens and has some nice views of Manhattan. The Pulaski Bridge, which is probably used more by residents than tourists, is very friendly for pedestrians. To make crossing the bridge easier, there is a physical barrier separating the pedestrian path from the bicycle lane, which is always great for both parties. The Queens' side of the bridge drops you off in Long Island City section of Queens, where there are a few bars and restaurants. It's worth checking out (for Manhattan sites) if you are in the neighborhood, but I would not go out of my way just to cross this bridge. read more

If you keep asking me where the nearest Pool is, then you're a bit too Pool-Asky for my liking. This is a lovely little drawbridge in Brooklyn, and I'm not sure why some people are so down on the beautiful bridge that helps you see an illuminated view of magical New York City. It's between Long Island City and Greenpoint, and means you don't have to get on the highway, which is actually a wonderful thing. Because who wants to get on the highway? I mean for the view yes, but not for the sinkholes and nightmare traffic. And there's no toll of course. So the Pulaski is awesome. It kind of makes Brooklyn and Queens seem so much closer, as many of the other crossings and connecting avenues do too. read more

Walking this bridge is something I can't describe with words, it's a truly breathtaking, inspiring, beautiful, architectural masterpiece of a bridge. But I don't think of it as just a bridge, it lives in my heart as much more than that. I love it so much that I took some rubble and paint from the bridge and put it in a jar on my shelf. Every morning I wake up and roll over to see the pieces of that gorgeous bridge and it inspires me and gives me the courage to get out of bed. If you're visiting New York, this is a must go to place! Small bridge which connects Queens to Brooklyn. Have crossed over it many times while doing my training runs from Manhattan over to LIC then over to Williamsburg and back. As compared to other NYC bridges it's nothing all that special and unassuming, but it offers some nice city views and it's also a drawbridge. Also, makes it easy to hit multiple boroughs in one shot. read more

Great bridge for crossing by bike (or on foot) with stunning views of the NYC skyline. Not a lot of walkers / cyclists, so the lack of separate, designated lanes is not an issue. Be careful though and pay attention for cyclists and pedestrians to avoid a painful crunch. Two broad pull outs off the pedestrian way allow ample photo opportunities of NYC's skyline. When I lived in the area, I'd walk across Pulaski to MoMa P.S. 1. Once I made a date out of it with my then-boyfriend-now-husband. Pulaski Bridge is pedestrian friendly. It's also good for bicyclists. Either way, however you decide to traverse it, you'll get great views of the Manhattan and Queens/LIC. Worth checking out if you are in the neighborhood. read more

I like this little bridge! I find compared to other small passes in NYC this span is kept immaculate whether it's the road way or pedestrian walkway. Strange thing is there's no potholes on it either! Thanks to the NYC DOT they keep this thing freshly painted and liven for when it needs to be raised. I wold suggest though that they rehab the little tower that the bridge operator sits in. The windows are broke and the paint is peeling. Other than that it gets a thumbs up from me! read more

It can be a wait sometimes if you have to wait for the drawbridge but I don't think that happens too often. There is a foot path and bike lanes as well. So New York got its first snowstorm of the Winter of 2009 and I had to get from Greenpoint, Brooklyn to Midtown East that very evening - ugh. The easiest way would probably have been to have gone around the corner and taken the G-train to the 7-train but since I was running late I decided to run across the Pulaski Bridge so as to get directly to the 7. I'd heard the name of this bridge before as it's the official mid-point of the New York city Marathon, however, I had never walked, let alone run, across it before. The bridge is nothing to write home about though it has been connecting Queens and Brooklyn since 1954, has views of the Manhattan skyline on a clear night and, on one faithful evening in December 2009, it withstood the snow ( and so did I ) and helped me get to where I needed to go in the least amount of time. This is a pathetic little bridge in comparison to the other Goliaths spanning the East River. I had no idea this bridge existed until I challenged myself to Bike across all of the bridges in one day. First was the Brooklyn Bridge, then back to Manhattan by using the Manhattan Bridge, then I biked back over to Brooklyn using the Williamsburg Bridge. At this point, I had to get to Queens and this little bridge allowed me to connect to Queens quickly. There is no view from the top of this bridge, other than of the train yard. I finished my bridge excursion by using the Queensboro Bridge to get back over to Manhattan. The path is super narrow, and if you have a head on collision you might fall into traffic, so be careful if you see someone coming. read more

Cool for a stroll with your date. There is a little nook you could cuddle up too also to enjoy the view. There was a bum when I went, he wasn't bothering anyone. Pulaski offers a different type perspective of Manhattan with a cross of Brooklyn and Queens. The bridge Harlem shakes, its a drawbridge. If you have small ankles you can get caught between the gap. Then get mauled by the tons of bikers riding by. This bridge needs an enema! Add a bike lane or something. Hopefully you will not be the unfortunate pedestrian with bicycle bells ringing in your ear "get the ef out the way" Next step the triage unit. I use this bridge a couple times a week bike-commuting to work in Long Island City. When I first started biking the bridge (spring/summer 2012) I felt like I was always breathing in exhaust and getting pelted in the face with debris from the road... strangely that hasn't happened this spring. Maybe they did some construction over the winter? Anyway, the bike/pedestrian path is narrow, but for the most part people respect each other. There are lots of biking commuters on this bridge who tend to be more cautious and considerate and less aggressive hipster-y bikers. The incline coming from BK is a bit steep... but it's a short bridge, so it's totally manageable. The biggest thing to watch out for is daydreaming and phone-talking pedestrians... especially women... They tend to zone out and then randomly wander into the middle of the path, or start excitedly gesturing, laughing and swerving while on the phone... A polite bell ring or "Watch the f*ck out" usually works. enjoy your ride! read more

It's a bridge. Get over it (Hey!) Good route to walk (or bike, if you're one of those) from Long Island City to Greenpoint and points Brooklyn-y. It's a good spot to watch marathon runners die after coming over the hump. You can get good views of a crappy river and Manhattan from the bridge itself. Generally there's no delay to get over the bridge, if there is it's because the drawbridge is up. It happens, and it takes a while. Get over it. The walkway is skinny, and bikers can be dicks if they're going too fast especially on a downhill - keep your head on a swivel and you'll be fine. Best of all, a great up and coming brewery is right under the Queens side of the bridge, Transmitter Brewing - if on foot, just walk down the Queens side steps and you're there, assuming it's Friday early evening or Sat/Sun early afternoon or so. Plus, it's 50x better than the Pulaski Skyway. read more

The narrow Pulaski path is hazardous for both bikers and pedestrians alike. Here's my Reader's Digest instructions on navigating the bridge without appearing on The Gothamist: *PEDESTRIANS* Stay to your far right and walk straight. Deviating from walking straight will most likely leave you grazed by a seasoned speedster. *BIKERS* For the sake of everyone's safety, please be sure to have a functioning front light, rear light and bell. Feel like zigzagging through? No problem, ring your bell/toot your horn and yell out LOUD during passing. If foot traffic will ever be as bad as post-Sandy, just walk your bike. You won't be a statistic from an extra five minutes tacked on to your trip. Today was my first time crossing this bridge. It's cool because you get some nice views but there really isn't much space to walk with everyone else and the bikers. Also, the bridge moves a little under your feet when there are trucks or a lot of cars driving by. Overall, cool bridge but it's not for sightseeing it's more for just getting from Queens to Brooklyn or vice versa without taking a bus or car. read more

It's just a small bridge over Newton Creek connecting Greenpoint in Brooklyn with Long Island City in Queens. It's a small bridge so there's no grand entrance, no architectural details worth mentioning, and no toll. The view of the city from the bridge is decent but the one narrow walkway is annoying to share with pedestrians and bikers so use your head and stay to your right. read more

Great view of the river which I don't even know the name of or will ever really Google. It says it is accessible by bike riding AND pedestrian walking but I didn't see neither as I was in a moving vehicle. All I know is that unless the biking and pedestrian is on the same road as the oncoming traffic, they need to make that clearer on the directional side of things. I am not playing the "see if I can outrun a car going 60mph from behind me" game. Nor will I play this game riding a bike. Helmet or no Helmet. The ride on this bridge is rather brief that connects Queens (L.I.C. ~ Long Island City) to Brooklyn (Greenpoint). If the G train isn't running which it isn't until February 2015, chances are you will be going over this bridge quite often. I'm not sure that I'm a fan but this bridge serves its purpose. Yeah, I don't know what it is with this bridge. I mean, it starts okay, it makes you wonder what is coming. But than when you finally get to the top it doesn't really share the ... And yes, it connects Queens and Brooklyn, which is great if you're into that, and it enjoys all the characteristics a bridge should have, like connecting two sites, and going over water, which distinguishes it from an overpass, but at the end it's just a bridge no more no less. For pedestrians, it's a 2, for drivers and cyclists, a 3. For all, the bridge is just extremely basic, nothing at all about it worth taking photos of to share with people, besides the distant view of Manhattan from the creek. But it does the job of getting you over the toxic Newtown Creek from Brooklyn to Queens or vice versa. A benefit for all, but especially cyclists, is that the bicycle lanes are completely separated from the pedestrian path and cars. The are a couple dangerous aspects to it for pedestrians. First is the stairways, the steps are dangerously small, making it extremely unsafe and difficult to walk down them. I noticed some also are rusted out with gaps between the steps. They are also filthy like they have never been cleaned, with bird poop all over. I recommend just walking a bit extra on both sides and not using the stairs. There is also a spot on the bridge over the creek where the guards are not high at all, maybe 3 feet. read more
