From what we learned, Moose is a small chain around the UK, and known for its hearty North American-inspired menu. Definitely true - the menu had plenty of US classics like benedicts, pancakes, waffles, and hash dishes. I was actually surprised by how many things were available, as the cafe itself wasn't all that big. Small enough even that we couldn't even get a seat inside! No problem at all though, as we were instead able to sit in their outside area which lined a cute cobblestone alley, adjacent to some shops. I've said it before, and I'll say it again for the typical American traveler... in England, do NOT expect service to be what you're used to. You'll certainly wait to be tended too, and the visits from a server are very limited. In no way do I mean this as a complaint, it's actually kind of nice to not feel rushed and practice patience :) All in all, the staff who did take care of us were very sweet! My husband had an americano and I enjoyed my flat white (I swear I've loved every coffee I've ever had during England trips). For food I got the lula puebla, which was a fancy avo toast. The smashed avocado was fresh and well-seasoned, and the toasted sourdough it was smeared across was so thick and delicious. Even more delicious was the chipotle chilli jam that came atop of it. It also had feta, chilli flakes, and two poached eggs. I was definitely a fan! My husband also really liked his eggs benedict that included griddled Serrano ham. I know, I know, travel all this way only to have a US-style breakfast but hey it did the trick! Wouldn't hesitate to pop in another Moose location in the future.

I had the Eggs Benedict with Ham Hock, it's one of those dishes which is a great judge of a place as it only has a few ingredients any one of which can disappoint. Alabama's was spot on. In fact I'm thinking that the ham hock possibly works better than streak bacon which I hate myself for saying, but it's less salty and gives it a more rustic homey feel. Which I really enjoyed. I love my coffee and I can say their flat white was spot on for me. The staff seem great here as well, very welcoming and friendly, offering to give suggestions or anwser any questions about the food. There aren't a huge number of places even in the city centre where I can guarantee a good breakfast and a great coffee in the same spot. I'm glad to have found another to add to my list.

It's been a heck of a long time since we were last in Chester. In fact, there was no such place as Starbucks or Costa and a Frappuccino wasn't even in the language it's that far back. Starbucks, a second wave coffee provider, was only venturing into Canada when we were last there. Creperies too were places you'd find only in Brittany and Normandy. The great British public would have eschewed, nay nay, pooh - poohed the very thought way back when. But all change; doncha just love it that the only constant is change? Having enjoyed many a good savoury and sweet crepe - doesn't everybody enjoy a good crepe? - in Brittany and Normandy with calvados and crisp, light, sweet cidré we knew done right it would be tasty. So I had the crisp bacon & maple syrup crepe (just over £5) and being moi (well we must nod to the French) I had only one question. Is it maple syrup or that artificial flavoured sugar rubbish pretending to be maple syrup. The reply was instant and welcome: the real Mc Coy. Great. I did have a moment of weakness mind as there was a goat cheese choice but I stuck with bacon. My companions chose an all day breakfast crepe and a Mexican chicken crepe respectively (just over £7 each). We all had cappuccinos (large at under £3 each) and Welsh sparkling water (£1.8), none of yer Perrier or Badoit here, just right too. The service was darn good. The food was tasty, light and perfect - ooh la la - as our French cousins might say. The coffee was alright and more third wave but I'd prefer a much more punchy coffee, but disappointment aside I'll leave it five star for the great service and tasty food. It might even take us back to Chester one day, but I did notice a divine looking (and smelling) Yorkshire pudding sandwich shop, so it might be there next time - now you certainly won't find one of those in Normandy or Brittany, vive la difference.

Booked in for 8pm on a Saturday night, we headed down the incense scented steps and descended into the darkness of the restaurant. The front of house desk is a slot machine, and we were pointed in the direction of the bar to wait until our table was ready. The drinks menu includes cocktails, hard shakes and floats, beer, wine, and cider. Not wanting to start down the road of a white wine hangover the next day, I opted for a cider. Not having any names I recognised, I went for a Jeramiah Weed - tasting not unlike JD & coke, it was unusually delicious! Our table took about 15/20 minutes to be ready, for which the front of house were eternally apologetic and resulted in a free round of drinks, but this just meant we had some time to take in our surroundings. We're talking neon, bricks, bars, wire, photos of criminals, doors marked with incoherent numbers, and boxes marked in the same way to represent convict's belongings. The menu contains everything you could wish for; wings, ribs, fried lasagne bites (yes please), burgers, fries, and steak. Unfortunately for us, they didn't have the lasagne bites, mac & cheese, or bacon wrapped maple onion rings - but we sure made up for it... Our table contained a whole butter basted poussin, bbq brisket, chorizo fried waffles, wings with both tequila lime & frank's buffalo hot sauces, padron peppers, two portions of fries, and two portions of slaw. Served up in the same aluminium trays as Yardbird, it's a down and dirty style of eating (though knives and forks are obviously provided!) Top items had to be the poussin, with a perfectly crispy skin, and the chorizo fried waffles, with little pieces of chorizo and a spicy chipotle sauce. Padron peppers, which are currently a personal obsession, provided a vegetable on the table, and the slaw was vinegar based rather than mayonnaise, meaning extra greenery that I could get involved with. Wings had a nice spice, though I've come to the conclusion I prefer the sauce based kind, rather than the breaded ones served up. Although the brisket had the perfect texture, there was a bit too much bbq sauce for my personal taste. Desserts included fried oreos, ice cream 'sliders' with brioche, and pecan pie - that's if you have enough room... A great meal with friendly service; hopefully next time we can have room for something sweet!

I was dubious about a Death Row themed restaurant - I'm not sure the theme sits well with me and I do feel it's in poor taste. However if you have the nerve to go for such an out-there concept then I figure you've got to be good at what you do. DECOR - I wanted MORE from them. There's a photo and document for an inmate for the 80s on one wall, and illustrations of other creepy looking guys on another. We were sat in booths, and there was some wire fence to break up the space. Neon signs adorned the walls along with a few old-style prison phones. But I felt like they should have pushed it further. If you're going to call yourself Death Row Diner I want to be seated in a cell or have some metal bars in the room. COCKTAILS - I ordered the 'No Vaseline' - a Chambord, blueberry and lemon cocktail. It was wonderful. Sadly I spilt most of it, but was enjoying it so much I ordered a new one. The second one was a bit stronger than the other so must have been mixed by somebody nice, but was still good. The £7.50 price seemed reasonable by my London standards. FOOD - They have a good range of options. Whether you want to play it safe with a classic cheeseburger or half chicken, or try something a bit different like brisket or beef burger with shrimp. It also means there should be a price to satisfy everyone. The starters/sides are possibly the most inventive options. I tried the bacon wrapped onion rings (still prefer batter) and the deep fried lasagne bites (amazing). For my main I ordered the chilli burger. Really tasty but I only managed half with all the other bits I'd eaten. The food was served in metal trays. I'm not sure this really worked and seemed at odds with the plastic tray they used on the branding of their menus. Ultimately I was underwhelmed by it all. Had they not chosen this name I probably would've been more impressed by it all. But if you go with a theme you have to take it all the way. Would I go again? Yes. Would I try somewhere else first? Certainly.

Not only do they do a great coffee .. but their Canadian/American style breakfasts are the best I've had. The service is always exceptional and the place is doing so well with more and more places opening up and it makes me so happy. The servers are always so nice, and the food is always so good .. I usually go for the grande bouche (French toast with bacon) or veggie version (no bacon) and it is to die for. You get 2 large brioche french toasts and a very generous serving of real maple syrup and I can't get enough. I usually put some syrup in my coffee and Ooof. The portion is great ... I'm content after eating there .. not hungry and not uncomfortably full so it's just perfect and today we had 3 drinks and 3 meals for just under £10 each ... you can't grumble at that at all. I ordered the Fab Five Freddy which was a sandwich with a hamburger patty, pulled pork and an egg on top, served with their potato hash, a grilled tomato and a dill pickle. It was delicious. I also ordered the chocolate and peanut butter milk shake (£3), which was delicious but could have been colder and thicker. My fiance ordered the breakfast burrito which I tried a bite of, which had way more fillings than a standard California breakfast burrito like olives, but it was really good too. His family came with us and loved their dishes too; they've been before and took us here. The only downside is this place is popular meaning when we came, they were out of a lot of items like French toast, waffles, bagels (and most of the menu items are served on a bagel), and a few other items too. Plus, they tout their specials of the day, so I asked about those, but the special was... They're out of a lot of things! Their breakfast menu offers a wide variety of interesting takes on the traditional English cooked breakfast, including the 'Smoked Moose' (scrambled eggs and salmon) and the 'New York Moose' (eggs Benedict), all of which pose an attractive alternative to toast or cereal. Their breakfast prices are perhaps a little more expensive than your usual greasy spoon, but Moose Coffee is well worth a visit if you're in the area.

It had a bit of a sweet taste to it which works well with the chicken (I did find it a bit salty). The portion size was good for the price. I'm not too much of a fan of sweet things but I saw that they had pancakes and would try that next time I check this place out!
