Great post covid ambiance. Appetizers were amazing. Octopus and Calamari in particular. Wines were fabulous and out of the ordinary.

Seriously, the best, thickest cuts of bacon I've ever seen, freshest lamb shanks ever, great made-on-the-premises sausages. If you are a carnivore or happily-content omnivore, you will have died and gone to heaven when you walk in here. Staff are super-friendly and helpful and the place is meticulously clean. Prices are also very, very reasonable given the quality of meat here. Every neighbourhood should be so lucky to have a great butcher shop like Le Viandal.

We're talkin' some seriously good steak here and at $6.50 for 10oz. we're talking some seriously cheap eats that turn out better than restaurant fair. I also purchased some onsite handmade sausage that looks just wonderfull. But since I was simply walking by and discovered this, from what I hear, Verdun institution I didn't have anything in mind. But the possibilities in this meatopolis are seemingly endless. I saw every possible cut of beef, veal, pork, venison, and delicious duck. They also have prepared meals and other tasty goodies for meat lovers. Seriously there is no hope for me now that I have a serious meat shop just around the corner (sorta). The service was great, helpful and friendly. Butchery is a dying art and anyone with a love of food should support their local butchers. Keep in mind that if you buy steak at your local chain store supper market is cheap quality, often very badly butchered and overpriced, while a butcher has a deeper appreciation and respect for meat. You don't have to eat offal to be a meat lover, enjoying a good quality steak is sufficient and reason enough to bypass the chain store and go support your local butcher, local fishmonger and local whatever. Make friends with the owner and you'll see the good stuff that comes from this relationship. It's like going to a bar, if you're a good tipper, by the end of the night, your drinks are free.

This place is about short proximity supplies of great quality, natural, organic food. They grow their own beef, control the process at the slaughterhouse and sell it directly to the public. The meat is individually wrap and frozen quickly to make sure that the quality remain high. This enable them to offer a wide choice of cuts and the vacuum packing enables quick unfreezing in cold water. On this nice spring day, we settle to have our first bbq of the season but our plan was rather a late one... we didn't have a bbq and it was 4 pm and stores were closing at 5 pm on this Saturday. After stoping in Hudson to buy a charcoal Weber (with charcoal) we asked the store if they knew of a butcher in town and one of the girl directed us vaguely to this producer. We got there at 4:30 pm and were greeted by a nice and very enthusiastic woman who gladly showed us their variety of cuts available. For our bbq, we settle on a great porterhouse steak which she suggested would take about an hour to unfreeze in cold water. We also bough some bacon and fresh eggs. At home, we unfroze the steak while assembling the bbq and proceeded to cook our steak. A porterhouse is a higher quality t-bone and is big enough to share (a part of it is the "filet mignon"). I shared the sirloin part with my partner (who had a small part with her salmon) and our son got the filet mignon. It was probably the tastier piece of meat I ever had in North America! We followed up with bacon and eggs on the next morning and it was absolutely great. They don't produce their own pork and chickens but source it from nearby places they know and they make sure that those follow the same organic, humane process that they do for their beef. An awesome place to know and we will be back often. My philosophy with meat is that it is better to eat less of it but when you do, source it with high quality. This place makes it possible and easy to do for us! They also have a place in Terrebonne for those that find it more convenient.

As others have said, they also make sandwiches to go, which one can choose to eat at their little parcel shelf next to the door. The appeal of this place for me, though, is the partially-smoked and cured pork shoulder rolls they keep in the small cold case along the back wall. They're not even labelled, so you may have to ask to be pointed at them. But do ask. One of those balls of meat, simmered in a cauldron of water for 150 minutes, yields both the most densely-flavored, tastiest cold pork you'll ever put on your sideboard, and a pot of truly magnificent stock for your next pea or white bean soup. They also sell a couple of different varieties of bacon, in slabs if you wish. And there is no question too stupid for the bright lady in the baseball hat behind the cash. This is another of those little places that makes cooking my way through a Montreal winter into something I almost look forward to in summer.

The owner, Patrick Loyau, owner of this butcher shop in the Jean-Talon market, knows how to make a business succeed. He bought the premises on rue Mozart in 1994, at the age of 24. When he opened the store, he was not yet a butcher.... his employees taught him everything....so hiring the right people is always the best strategy for a good enterprise. So the owner bought the business from a guy that used to be quite sloppy and lacked in cleaniness. Well the current owner revamped that and is clean and listening and trying lot of stuff and is always serving people, always rolling his stock and that's a very good thing to hear about a place where freshness is everything...or Almost. There's also quality and variety. And you he hold 60 kinds of sausages / chorizos / gendarme/ peppeto. Also a pretty interesting selection of Gluten Free sausages. The owner and his wife as pretty much always working there and being successful at it. They have love for what they do. They serve some food in the Marché de l'Ouest food court like burgers and european hotdog with home made fries. Cheap deal for quick eating. I won't go into details about every sausages I've tried there, but I have to say that half would sound about right. I like their Gluten Free sauvages, especially because it's Game Meat and I LOVE GAME MEAT. Also they have some good gluten free breakfast sausages, nothing like you would normally taste. I also like their more casual sausages like Italian, or Chorizo which are natural, no additive and freaking delicious compare to the one you buy in the super market. Smoked saucages! This is delicious! the Swiss Cheese or Debriziner which is spicy smoked german saucages is amazing. Most of the time I go to Marché de l'Ouest, I'll grab at least something to eat there and have a chat with the owner about what's new, what's the good seller of the week, etc.

Another great thing about this place are the wonderful Italian products they import. The other day, Dino had me try some special Mortadella he had imported (the name escapes me). It was soft, perfectly flavoured and melt-in-your mouth good. If you're looking for a butcher in the Plateau/Mile-End, look no further.
