Our tour guide, Larry, was phenomenal. He's animated, engaging, and has a way of making you feel like you're living the story rather than just hearing it. He made great eye contact with everyone, pulled the audience into every moment, and had us hanging on his every word. I was a little worried my daughter might lose interest, but she was completely immersed from beginning to end. The tour itself is incredibly informative, and you leave with so much more knowledge than you came in with. If you have the option, request Larry! you won't regret it! The only downside was that the tours are packed. At times people were left standing in the hallway trying to hear, and during the basement portion (which we paid extra for), the line stretched out the door and many of us couldn't hear what Larry was saying during the final stop. It's a small disappointment for an otherwise exceptional experience, and I hope they consider limiting group sizes so everyone can fully enjoy the tour. Even with that, this is a place I would recommend to anyone visiting the area. It was unforgettable, and I'd go back again in a heartbeat. I'm hoping my daughter choose another camp in the area so we can stay the night next time.

Renee has a great speaking voice, is knowledgeable, energetic, and has a great passion for history. Also an excellent trolley driver through the many narrow winding streets! The trolley is air conditioned and unlike Boston trolleys, these trolleys have glass windows, not plastic, better for viewing in rainy weather. Fyi- The Newport Visitor Center can be confusing. Be aware that there are 3 trolley tour companies working out of the Visitors Center and all are doing historic tours but the name of this company is "Historic Tours". Saw confusion on the platform where all 3 trolley companies board/disembark.

A little over a year ago, the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island painted a green…read morestripe on the sidewalk and called it The Independence Trail. At first, I was a little skeptical, but then I realized that not only is this a great, low-cost way to showcase Providence's history to visitors, but it's a great refresher for the locals as well. Plus it's completely free for anyone to enjoy. But I let an entire year go by before I actually explored the trail. I'd walk by it every now and then and think 'oh, the Independence Trail, I've been meaning to check that out.' Then I'd forget or get distracted by something shiny--you know how it is. It wasn't until today when I tried to take two out-of-town visitors on the Providence Trolley Tour, found it to be not running (and they didn't update their website *fist shake*), when I decided to sample the Independence Trail and see what it was all about. Admittedly, I've only done two stops on the trail so far, but I was thoroughly impressed and my friends really enjoyed it. I've lived in Providence for five years, and I'm a librarian/ local history nerd, but I learned many new things and remembered things that I hadn't thought about in ages. The trail is a three-mile walk through downtown Providence that covers over four centuries of history and features 75 sites ranging from a place where George Washington slept to a statue of Civil War General Ambrose Burnside, whose distinctive facial hair coined the word 'sideburns.' All you have to do to use the trail is to pick it up at any point, and follow it until you see an emblem on the sidewalk that says "Independence Trail." These are located at points of interest, and when you call the number and punch in your location code, you get a mini history lesson about where you are standing. Double bonus, you don't need a fancy phone or to scan a QR code--any cell phone will do. Going to a tourist attraction and having to suffer one of those horrible acoustiguides is a soul-sucking experience, but calling the Independence Trail hotline and putting it on speaker so everyone can enjoy and look around is a delightful way to spend part of a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The narration is incredibly thorough, very funny in parts and lasts just long enough. This is going to be my new go-to with out-of-town guests and I fully plan to spend many days meandering around the trail and re-learning about my adopted city. Well done, Lil' Rhody!

Many years ago, well before the pandemic, visitors to Providence couldn't help but notice the…read morebrightly painted green line throughout downtown, dotted with colorful emblems. Dubbed the Independence Trail, this 2.5-mile path was designed by Robert Burke, owner of Pot Au Feu restaurant on Custom House Street and founder of the nonprofit Independence Trail Education Foundation. Managed, promoted, and maintained by Burke's foundation, the self-paced tour showcased 4 centuries of Providence history, architecture and culture, highlighting 133 notable sites altogether. It told the story of Rhode Island from its founding by Roger Williams through the first shot in the Revolution, and pointed to places where Lincoln spoke and Washington slept. The trail started at the State House, continued across the river to Benefit Street and South Main, crossed the Crawford Street Bridge and zigzaged throughout the Financial District. Of course, since the tour was self-guided, you could start and end your walk at any points, and take as much time as you wish. Within the Downtown Improvement District (DID) boundaries, you'd find a variety of highlights from the Arcade to the Spanish American War Memorial. You'd learn about the city's hurricane marks, the Turks Head building, Haven Bros. diner, Burnside Park, and so much more. Each destination was labeled with an emblem showing a unique location number and general phone number: (401) 441-6401 (disconnected for a while now). When you called and listen to the welcome message. Unfortunately, that project has been in disrepair for years and many of the emblems are now gone or ripped off. Too bad that a project with such a potential did not have any follow through.

I got the impression that we could throw sticks all day and they wouldn't tire of the game. They accompanied us for most of our walk around the property. In the barn we met a very friendly guide who told me a little about the farm and game me a map along with a detailed description of what to look for. The farm is part of Historic New England along with a couple other properties in Rhode Island and many in Massachusetts. The admission is $4 for adults, $2 for kids and $3 for seniors. We headed out for a walk through the pastures. We saw the cows and sheep that live on the farm, a cool windmill they use to water the livestock and the most amazing views of the bay and the Jamestown bridge. When we got to the rocky beach the dogs were waiting for us to throw rocks into the water. We collected shells and sea glass before we followed the dogs back to the barnyard. There is a shop with grass-fed lamb and beef as well as restrooms which we didn't use so I can't comment on the cleanliness. The farm is beautiful and the views alone are worth the price of admission.
