Can't say enough wonderful things about this center. Our 22 lb rescue needed a mast cell lump removed. The cost at our local vet ranged from $2,300-$4,600 depending on complexity and biopsy options. I contacted Providence after a neighbor used them for dental surgery for her two pets. Providence communicates mainly via text. They do so quickly and efficiently. They provided their email for her medical records and we were scheduled for surgery within weeks. Including a donation the total was $650 and the care was excellent. read more

I would not recommend coming here for first time animal owners. They cannot promise good enough service that doesn't send you back to the vet, coming out of pocket thousands of dollars nor enough guidance to catch any issues with post op. They also only have communication through text or in person which is not ideal. I lost my kitty 3 days post op with them (spay/neuter btw). Before losing her I expressed concerns that I now know were NOT normal. I was not told to bring her in but instead "all animals react differently to procedure". After searching I'm pretty sure she passed from GI shutdown in cats. All that said do THOROUGH research on general and specific complications that could occur with your procedure because with this place you're all on your own. read more

Of 33 cat/dog pets I've had from childhood to adulthood, I counted 11 coming from this center (formerly SPCA) so a lot of positive experiences with this place over many years. Recently, we adopted 2 stray kittens in 2020 and got them desexed here at Providence. All is well, they're healthy cats! Another round of stray cats we adopted was last May 2024, again desexed here. All good. Those strays had kittens (happened before we adopted them) and they are now old enough to be desexed as well. My six cats are happy and healthy. Our regular vet is not Providence, but Providence has been a great resource for spaying and neutering far more affordably than our family vet. I will pay for ER vets and surgeries, tests, etc. as needed for my pets, but for something like a routine desexing surgery, there is no need to pay inflated prices, and going somewhere that does it so routinely assures they are well practiced. During desexing exam, it was determined that one kitten had a tooth infection. Providence told us he had a fractured jaw and that a snaggle tooth was the only thing holding his jaw together. They needed to put a wire in his jaw for it to properly heal. Poor baby! We had taken him to be looked at by UrgentVet in Wayne, and they said there was an infection but completely missed the BROKEN JAW! Anyway, Providence healed him and he's a new cat! We've had positive experiences here and appreciate the text communication (they don't do calls) from the vet side of things. They may take a day or so to reply, but they always do, and we were given more thorough & intelligent replies than we get from our regular vet. Providence puts heart in their care, I have confidence in their capabilities, and I would recommend them! read more

I had a cat neutered last week. The pets are exposed to a lot of other animals in the process and my kitty got very sick a few days post-operative. The surgical follow up here at Providence is abysmal. You can't get anyone on the phone and they don't respond to the texts that they you use demand for communication. They just ignore you and your pet. We don't know how or why he is so sick now. I'm really disappointed that 1. they got this cat so sick in the first place, 2. they are not accountable for post operative complications 3. they don't care at all and are unresponsive. They take your money and leave an expensive mess of the pet's health. This is not a cost effective option if there are complications of surgery such as respiratory infections and damage to nose and throat, picked up at Providence, but which they ignore. It is very costly to take the pet to a regular local vet afterwards to fix the problems Providence caused. I wish we'd gone to a regular vet in the first place as this would have been more cost effective in the long run read more

I brought a stray cat to Providence on Tuesday and was told by the "manager" that they could not help my cat. I became upset and didn't understand why the "manager" would turn me away. She has no empathy or compassion. She gave me the number for Brandywine to call but she would not let me use the landlines phones. Another woman who was waiting for their pet called several times for me but never got an answer. I'm 85 years old and not able to drive that far. We adopted our puppy from Providence. Sadly, she was diagnosed with a hema sarcoma( cancerous) tumor, which is terminal. The vets at Penn, a highly respected organization, stated the tumor likely was caused by an ovary that was left in her body when they spayed her at Providence. I am heartbroken that they were that careless and negligent, but they were. Daisy died 6 months after her terminal diagnosis. I am sharing this because I hope it doesn't happen again. read more

My poor daughter, her cat was too frightened and hid from her, she could not find him to put in the carrier so was late to appt. She called many times in a panic and couldn't get a human but pleaded with them to please still see her cat. She was 10 min late and they refused. On top of that she had to make a $50 deposit to hold the appt and the assholes kept her money instead of letting her reschedule. We have raised money for them in the past with Girl Scouts bake sales plus my own donations. But no more. They obviously don't know anything about cats. I understand if she missed her appt, but to keep her deposit just sucks.... read more

I'm not mad at the shelter at all. I'm in Vetmed so I understand that there is a rush for morning drop off, but quite frankly they didn't make the drop off easier my cat needed a neuter dropped him off, but took him away immediately like it was just weird and it made me feel weird all day. I was just super nervous because it was a rescue I never got to meet anybody. It was just a weird experience and if you aren't prepared to just drop your animal Off and not hear anything until pick up then go off this is your place. with my anxiety disorder I probably will never go back. I do want to mention. It's extremely convenient to be able to text and let them know when you are there and then just bring the pet out but again I didn't even get to see where he was going be. The recovery was great. His incision healed very nicely however they shaved around his balls and then tattooed him, and made a whole separate shaving instead of one nice path it all was a bit odd. my pet honestly was supposed to have another surgery and I ended up canceling it because I just didn't have a good feeling about the intensity of the surgery. Super helpful animal welfare agency. With most of the low cost clinics (PAWS etc) I usually use for my rescues and fosters backlogged during the pandemic, they were able to help me get my most recent batch of fosters spayed and ready for adoption months before any of the more local resources could get us in. Everyone at the desk was super sweet and helpful and the surgeon did a wonderful job. The kitties seemed pain free and were clean, happy, and recovered well on discharge which is not always the case when using high volume spay/neuter services. I would highly recommend them to anyone else in animal rescue looking for alternatives to the overwhelmed Philly services. The only downside would be that it can be difficult to get in touch with someone via phone if you have non-standard requests that can't be easily communicated via email (the best way in my limited experience to interact with this facility). But those issues are fairly standard especially in the current situation. Due to the pandemic, veterinary clinics across the board are being overwhelmed, so not being able to get someone on the phone quickly is understandable. But it may be difficult for older clientele or folks with limited access to tech. Super happy to have this resource! They are doing a wonderful job helping animals get care, help, and homes. read more

It's been a few years since I adopted a pet and I recall the process being easy. Visited on Sunday so my son and I can walk a dog for exercise. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They paired us up with a friendly and energetic dog. So glad they did because the dog really needed more activity. They have a few activity cages where you can let the dog run free. Plenty of land to walk the dog on the leash. The process was great. We returned the dog and then proceed to the cat/kitten area. It was nice seeing the cats were able to walk around the roam freely. We were able to pet the cats and give them snacks. The staff was so friendly that my son said he can't wait to go back. We will be back to volunteer and walk another dog or two. I took my kitty there to get her teeth cleaned. When the work is done you pick up your animal in the lobby, there is no discussion with a doctor or aide re: how things went. When I got my girl home I noticed she had tape (which was the same color as her fur) around her front leg and she was chewing at it. Upon closer inspection I realized the IV needle was still in her arm! I called them and of course there was NO ONE there that could take it out and I could bring her the next day. My cat was very defensive and would not allow me to get to it, and she would not leave it alone so waiting till the next day was not acceptable. Fortunately, I have a friend that works in rescue and she came over and took it out while I tightly held my cat. My cat and I were distressed for 4 hours and it could have been much worse thanks to this place. THEY ARE HORRIBLE! That is the last time I will ever deal with them. read more

My dog Peyton had to have surgery and this place was recommended to me. When picking up my girl from eye surgery she was covered in dry blood from head to paw. This place was dirty and employees and doctors treat your beloved pets as a number. Spoke to head of surgery department and I asked her why they didn't clean her off, or put a cone around her head, and she said that " You get what you pay for"! First they only communicate through text. Not a great system for the older generation. Second my dog had and appointment for his annual shots on February 16. I usually give him his heart worm, flea and tick med the first of the month. He was out of his flea and tick medication so I called to pick up a refill for the monthly. I buy it monthly because it depends on his size. They refuse to sell me the flea and tick medication before his appointment. Stating he has to have a heart worm test first. I argued my appointment is not until the 16th. No matter what they refused to fulfill the order even though I argued "he has to go 14 days without his medication. ZERO RATING - vet "service" you get what you pay for.... this facility almost killed my 8 mos old puppy in a routine spay pprocedure - when i brought her in for an emergency ck that i called for two days after they sent her home with antibiotic - within 3 hours i had her at a different vet (Windcrest in de) that immediatley admitted her and had to perform emergency surgery-providence denied any wrongdoing - the vet that saved her life even wrote al etter and sstated that he had never seen anything like it in his career (he is the top vet and owner at windcrest) the inside sutures were wrong and cause her tissue to become necrotic killng her good tissue from the insideout and opening the incision - the emergency fix of their mess up caused 17 stapels and 2 nights in ICU at windcrest thank god for them - Providence has still ddenied any fault and NEVER EVEN ASKED ABOUT HER WELL BEING!! going to PAC with your beloved pet is like playing russian roulette! it cost me thousands of dollars to correct their butcher job!! i will never ever recommend them - i would not take a stuffed doll there! shame on them for their absolute neglect of her well being! the first response from them was covering their own self and never making sure our puppy was okay ever! read more

I just was there last night and cannot tell people enough how amazing the Center and workers are. A couple weeks ago, we found Lola on their site, and before the scheduled meeting since she was in foster care, the foster Dad decided to keep her. I was so upset but knew I'd 100% keep them in mind for when we found another perfect pet for us. Yesterday at work I seen Snow White on their Instagram story and I rushed myself and my dog over to meet her... and the rest is history! Stevie was who helped me and she was awesome and so was the trainer (wish I remembered his name). The workers were so nice and friendly, the animals were cared for so much and the grounds were amazing. I would recommend anyone to check them out! read more

Went to adopt a puppy today after going to see her last night. I waited outside for 1.5 hours. I brought my 3 y.o. dog Luna to do the meet and greet but they wouldn't even let us because they said there would be dominance issues in the house when the puppy got older. I tried explaining that my dog Luna does better with female dogs but they insisted. My family has always had female dogs around 2-3 years apart and never had issues. I adopted Luna from Providence when Luna was 3 months and my other dog daisy was 2 years old. They grew up perfectly together and Providence didn't give me any trouble when I adopted Luna. I tried explaining that to them but all they told me was "In a year you'll have to choose one or the other." It just frustrates me that they act like they know what works best with my dogs and that they knew the only possible outcome would be failure. When I went to go look at another dog, 6 year old female they said the same thing. Basically turning down any possibility of having multiple female dogs. I give them 2 stars because my first encounter 2 years ago resulted in the best girl I could possibly ask for and they made the experience a great one. It was the exact opposite this time around and left my family and I in heartbreak and disappointment. read more

Ever since the Delaware County SPCA was taken over and renamed Providence Animal Center I have taken my pets there for vet services. No, they are no intended to be an emergency service, so if something can't wait, call another vet. I have one vet for emergency visits that can't wait, and PAC for routine visits. Dr. Quarberg is my go to vet. She's friendly, kind, understanding and available via email for followup concerns. I've had 2 of my cats there for dental work, and there has never been a problem. I trust the vets, though the technicians and front desk could use some lessons in how to interact with pet owners. I've done all except the veterinarian job myself in various practices, so I know it's hard, but the clients notice. I'm sorry for the woman whose dog had surgery and was returned in poor condition. But the clinic is never dirty, never smells, and I rarely wait for long. I'd recommend this practice to anyone. read more

Quality animal shelter. My husband and I had been looking to adopt a dog for about 2 months when we finally walked into Providence AC. His cousin adopted a Pitbull from them and had a very good experience. When we initially went at 2pm on a Sat, all the puppies had already been adopted out (we wanted a puppy preferably), but they still had young and adults dogs there. We then went back a week later on a Sunday and waited outside an hour before they opened and were able to go home with a sweet 2 month old puppy (pics attached). We had a very good experience with the staff and our foster parent to the pup was actually a volunteer there and was able to give us some advice and even sent us home with a bag that included her toy, a blanket, and some food. The staff also gave us a free bag of dog food as well. Included in the price of adoption was the first round of shots, spat surgery (already done when we adopted her), and a microchip. They also offer some free initial services such as puppy socialization, initial checkup, booster shots, and more. We were very impressed with this shelter after seeing others. It is clean, the staff are helpful and friendly, and the dogs seem well taken care of. I would definitely recommend this shelter to anyone in the Philadelphia area!! If we adopt again in the future I will most definitely come back to Providence AC. read more

This past November I was on a search for my first ever dog. I looked to DelCo SPCA because of their location and the variety of breeds they had. The employees there made the entire process so painless and as a result I was able to bring home my best friend! I appreciate their "strictness" on adopting pets. You must show them proof that you are allowed to have pets within your house or rental. They were also very quick in terms of evaluating my dog and testing them for any aggression or fear with certain species and ages. Overall, it was a great experience with people that truly love what they do. If I were to rescue another dog it would certainly be from Delco. read more

My family and I went to SPCA last weekend in hopes of adopting a second dog. They introduced us to a few pups and we immediately fell in love with "Angelita". Since she had only just arrived there, they had to do a behavior evaluation before we would be permitted to take her home; that was Sunday, November 8. This pup is so sweet! Her disposition is wonderful. She's great with our kids and our 8 year old dachshund. She loves to lick and is already responding to training & commands. An interesting thing about her is that she's a rescue from Puerto Rico (Save a Sato). So in our training, we're speaking both English and Spanish to her. I used to work for a local animal hospital, and we always referred clients to the SPCA for adoptions and in turn, we took care of a lot of their inbound animals. The SPCA is a great organization. I have been going to the Delaware County SPCA off and on for the last year or so because I was interested in adopting a dog. I went there early on a Saturday, about 15 minutes before their opening time and joined the small group of people who had gathered outside waiting for the shelter to open. Some people were there to look/adopt, and there were a few with cat carriers who were there to turn in cats. I want to mention there was a college age girl with a tear streaked face with a carrier and then also separately there were an older couple with a few cat filled cages. Now I started talking to the girl and she mentioned that she was about to head off to college to live in the dorms and her parents ( who sound pretty evil) refused to take care of the cat while she was away. She couldn't take the cat into the dorms with her and after trying to get friends or family to take her cat, she realized she was going to have to give it up. As someone who recently graduated college after living in the dorms, I knew how amazing it felt to come home during the holidays/breaks and be greeted with purrs by my cats. Now the older couple were bringing in cats that they had trapped in their backyard. So the shelter opens and because the staff wouldn't let anyone go in the dog hallway, everyone was pretty much stuck in the small lobby of the shelter. I could overhear the girl recant her story to the staff, and the lady behind the desk asks her if her cat was her pet, and not a stray. The girl confirms that the cat was her pet. The lady tells the girl "well, we can't take cats that were owned by someone at this time, we have no room. We can only put down the cat for you, and that will be $35.00." The girl burst into tears and the staff just went on with their business. Meanwhile the staff happily accepts the elderly couple's stray cats in traps because they were strays and thats ok. So people in the lobby start questioning the staff's reasoning behind rejecting a perfectly healthy, up to date on shots cat and the lady at the desk gets defensive and keeps saying "because that's our policy." So a nice family who was there to look for a dog takes the girl aside and after asking a few questions, lets everyone know that they will take the cat. I was truly appalled at the way that the "caring and animal loving" staff/voulenteers at the SPCA would just coldly tell someone who was giving up their beloved cat and it obviously pained them that "oh, we're going to put it down and it will cost you $35.00" read more

Sixteen years ago I adopted the best dog in the whole world. Found in cage number 11, he barked and smiled and barked some more and it was love at first sight. But, the SPCA did not want to let me adopt him. I was young, I rented an apartment, I did not have a property deed. It is understandable to want to ensure that a pet will have a good home. And perhaps promises of undying love and devotion are not enough to warrant the transfer of a dog from a shelter to a stranger. But they made me jump through many hoops: copies of my lease; wanting to talk to my landlord (before cell phones made this possible at the times they were open.) And, they were not very nice. Rude, dismissive, too busy to be bothered, annoyed. Three times I visited hoping to adopt him. And next to me were homeowners (this seemed to be the key) looking at a dog. They clearly stated, "If he doesn't work out we can just bring him back." It was unbelievable that these people, elderly but possessing a property deed, were able to be so brazen about their lack of commitment and still allowed to adopt the dog. Well, the short side of the story is that I did what all young girls are tempted to do when they feel mistreated. I called my father. I am not sure what he did, or who he talked to, but on the fourth day and fourth attempt to adopt Kota, I was granted the privilege of taking him home. We have been together ever since. And I am very thankful to my father for his mysterious assistance. Just recently, 16 years later, I found a dog running lose, trailing his leash behind him in Media. Of course, I grabbed him before he ran into traffic on State Street and proceeded to ask everyone I saw if they knew the dog. Then Sam and I spent several hours going from place to place, pet store, emergency vet, etc. to see if anyone knew where he lived, if he had a micro chip, etc. The Del. Co. SPCA was our last choice. Funny, that ideally it should have been our first choice. But the sentiment was consistent at each place we visited. Perhaps better to keep the dog for a few days and post signs than to drop him off there... In the end we had no choice. We walked into the SPCA and were completely ignored as the staff talked amongst themselves commenting on a recent client...negatively in front of other clients. They seemed disorganized and annoyed (still!) And there Sam and I stood wtih a little dog in our arms...waiting...waiting. Finally we had to be rude to get someone's attention. (What did they think we wanted standing there with this dog anyway?) There is a happy ending. Someone realized she had taken a "Lost Dog" call for the dog we had found. The owners were called and we volunteered to drive the dog home. He never had to be checked into or checked out of the SPCA. It would have been hard to leave him there. If people love animals and want to work with them, I would hope that they would like people who also loved animals and are trying to help them. But it seemed there is no protocol to dealing with people, or communicating, or being helpful. A place to adopt animals should be much friendlier, perhaps cleaner, perhaps more organized. read more

**EDIT So I'm going to leave my original review here, but I have some (actually) nice stuff to add. I recently lost my cat, Dusty Bumbles, to nasal cancer. And of course, no cat can ever replace her, ever, but after some time I wanted another cat. So I of course went to the Delco SPCA, and as soon as I entered the cat room the volunteers were all over me. They were excited, polite, helpful, and patient. I must have held and petted every cat who had a green tag. (Those are the ones who have been there for a long time.) After a lot of indecision, I finally settled on a little black cat who had been there three months. Sadly, after I left with her, they called and told me to come right back because she tested positive for feline leukemia. So I turned around (in tears) and without asking, they had gotten the other cat who I was stuck on ready for me to take her home. Eleanor (now named Col. Von Peppertraps) had some issues, conjunctivitis, (similar to pinkeye) and an upper respiratory infection, as well as some broken teeth. But that's common in shelters. The staff were really happy that one of their animals found a home, and I was happy to provide a home. So it worked out. 5 stars for that experience, 1 star for my previous experiences. I'll average it to 3 and add a star to make it 4, because my bad experiences all happened 3-5 years ago. And maybe they've had a change of heart. However, they're calling themselves "no kill" now, but that just means that stray animals are being euthanized by animal control instead of having a chance of being adopted at the SPCA before being euthanized. **END OF EDIT I hate this place. Don't get me wrong, there are a few wonderful people working there, but the rest are rude and uncaring. I used to go there every week looking to adopt a dog, so I would see things when I was there. One time a sobbing woman came in cradling a little kitten in her arms. She had been moving furniture and the kitten got in her way, and she tripped over the poor little thing. She did not have a car and was unable to drive to the closest vet down the road. (Must've lived close by.) The girl at the front desk said something along the lines of, "yes we do have a vet on the premises, but he doesn't deal with the public." I'll never know what happened to the poor little thing. But I remember seeing it taking quick shallow breaths and laying in her arms with it's little eyes closed. Thankfully someone ran over and gave her a ride. Another time when I was 17 (2 weeks away from turning 18) I found a dog running along the side of 252. So obviously I pulled over and brought him to the SPCA. They wouldn't accept the dog because I was under 18 by two weeks. It had nothing to do with the animal, it had to do with being on a power trip. They were so rude it was unbelievable. So I decided to just tie the dog up out front. Thankfully, before I had to resort to that, someone happened to come in who knew the dog, (who had been lost for a week) and was able to call her friend and tell her the dog had been found. Which, by the way, the SPCA people said they would have to charge the woman the fee for holding the very same dog which they wouldn't accept. Also, I lived in an apartment across from one of the women who worked there. She had three dogs in her apartment, but declined our adoption application because she did not think our apartment building was appropriate for dogs. She was sullen and mean all the time and to everyone. Once again, powertrip. She could have let a dog's life be saved that day, but she decided to be a turd instead. Generally I'm quite forgiving of people, and I get that people have their bad days or that is sometimes gets busy in there.
