    Downtown Halifax

Unexpectedly nice and large GoodLife in the heart of downtown Halifax. It's so nice to be able to…read moretravel, and get to a GoodLife within 5 minutes of my hotel. However, I wish the weekend hours were a bit expanded - they open at 8am, which made it impossible for me to go here and still make my conference.

So this is "my" gym and I work out here often (though not as often as I should)…read more Let's start off with location: It's great. I don't have a car so I don't need to worry about parking. If you do, it may be more of a challenge. I know that they have in the past offered discounted rates (free?) at Scotia Square. Since I don't have a car, this is perfect. It's close to a ridiculous number of bus routes and the ferry terminal. The layout and design: When this place first opened, I wasn't sure about the floor plan. I didn't get it and I didn't like it. I've warmed up to it and it actually makes a fair bit of sense. The free weights area (with all its banging and grunting) is at the far end, away from most of the other areas so you don't have to deal with that (though most of the people there are respectful). Equipment is spaced out well enough that you have no trouble maneuvering. My only notable dislike is the personal training area. I kind of wish they had an actual wall rather than their little red divider. I also thought that the fact that one wall is nothing but window to the street would be distracting but the Granville plaza is usually empty (at least when I'm there) that it's not. Equipment: Want to do cardio (and I usually do)? There are a ridiculous number of machines. Heavy emphasis on treadmills. They could stand to have a few other of the less popular machines but go with people want, I get it. They have to sets of circuit machines, lots of more advanced strength training machines and... I guess the free weight area is good? That's not really where I spend my time. I was also resistant to the TVs attached to (almost) every piece of cardio equipment at first but now I love it. Hop on a machine, plug in your ear phones and watch TV for 30 minutes while you get your sweat on. It's spoiled me for other gyms. Cleanliness: I loved the old location in Scotia Square but it didn't always feel clean. I'm sure it was but there were lots of times I could see dust and sweat buildup on machines. This place? No. it's all good. One of my only major complaints is pretty common to GoodLife: the stretching area. Before GoodLife came to Halifax, there was Nubodys. They had a great stretching area with a station specifically engineered to help you stretch after (or before) your workout. GoodLife puts a few mats out on the floor. And that's it. Yes, you can use the studio but only if there's not a class going on. Cherry on top: there are two massage chairs by the entrance. Free!

    Clayton Park

Nubody's in Clayton Park is an all women gym facility. I've been a member for a few months now, and…read moream having great success. I've had an opportunity to work closely with a personal trainer by the name of Lisa Tilley and wouldn't trade her for the world! Lisa is motivating, educated, patient and understanding. She helps me with my work out and also gives me great advice for my diet. When I first met with Lisa, she asked me a number of questions to ensure she understood my fitness needs and goals. She truly did listen to what I struggled with and has since motivated me enough to stick with an exercise program! Nubody's is a little more expensive than a few other gyms, but it's well worth the money. I pay biweekly which helps me with my budgeting and I get to pay through payroll deductions. I actually receive a corporate discount. Being a member of an all-womens gym seems to be less intimidating and I really enjoy it!

This Nubody's, one of two in Clayton Park, is a women's only facility and is one of the newer…read moreNubody clubs. On the plus side, the gym is modernly designed and is very clean, and is a nice looking place to work out in. On the downside, in comparison to some of the other gyms, this gym is overly crowded with equipment and people, and could greatly benefit from an expansion. The gym tends to get uncomfortably warm during busy times especially the upstairs yoga studio. Also, the gym does not offer all of the same equipment as some other Nubody's - for example their is no stand up calf-machine and only one set of 20 lbs hand-weights. Overall, a nice club, but for practicality reasons I would choose to do my workout at another Nubody's.
