Unexpectedly nice and large GoodLife in the heart of downtown Halifax. It's so nice to be able to…read moretravel, and get to a GoodLife within 5 minutes of my hotel. However, I wish the weekend hours were a bit expanded - they open at 8am, which made it impossible for me to go here and still make my conference.

So this is "my" gym and I work out here often (though not as often as I should)…read more Let's start off with location: It's great. I don't have a car so I don't need to worry about parking. If you do, it may be more of a challenge. I know that they have in the past offered discounted rates (free?) at Scotia Square. Since I don't have a car, this is perfect. It's close to a ridiculous number of bus routes and the ferry terminal. The layout and design: When this place first opened, I wasn't sure about the floor plan. I didn't get it and I didn't like it. I've warmed up to it and it actually makes a fair bit of sense. The free weights area (with all its banging and grunting) is at the far end, away from most of the other areas so you don't have to deal with that (though most of the people there are respectful). Equipment is spaced out well enough that you have no trouble maneuvering. My only notable dislike is the personal training area. I kind of wish they had an actual wall rather than their little red divider. I also thought that the fact that one wall is nothing but window to the street would be distracting but the Granville plaza is usually empty (at least when I'm there) that it's not. Equipment: Want to do cardio (and I usually do)? There are a ridiculous number of machines. Heavy emphasis on treadmills. They could stand to have a few other of the less popular machines but go with people want, I get it. They have to sets of circuit machines, lots of more advanced strength training machines and... I guess the free weight area is good? That's not really where I spend my time. I was also resistant to the TVs attached to (almost) every piece of cardio equipment at first but now I love it. Hop on a machine, plug in your ear phones and watch TV for 30 minutes while you get your sweat on. It's spoiled me for other gyms. Cleanliness: I loved the old location in Scotia Square but it didn't always feel clean. I'm sure it was but there were lots of times I could see dust and sweat buildup on machines. This place? No. it's all good. One of my only major complaints is pretty common to GoodLife: the stretching area. Before GoodLife came to Halifax, there was Nubodys. They had a great stretching area with a station specifically engineered to help you stretch after (or before) your workout. GoodLife puts a few mats out on the floor. And that's it. Yes, you can use the studio but only if there's not a class going on. Cherry on top: there are two massage chairs by the entrance. Free!

We finally found a "coach" and he said to "stand over there and someone will find you". I left, but returned since I wasn't happy with the way I left my son alone. I returned to find him standing in the same place crying and no one even went over to him to find out if he was okay. Finally when the "coach" saw me she came over and said to continue standing there. I left once a "coach" was with him. The first day they went on a 2 km run and were taken out in the middle of the lake for races. My son has never been in a canoe or kayak and didn't feel comfortable and was terrified when left by himself to race another kid. The "coach" told him he would have to do it twice the next day because he didn't do it that day. He then cut his knee in one of the canoes and wasn't offered a band-aid or even a "are you okay". After lunch they had to clean up after the regulars, Since the week long and regulars are separated. As soon as I picked my son up he said he didn't want to ever go back after finding out what had happened I emailed sackawa immediately. I was told by one of there board members Guy that this wasn't a usual occurrence and I could just pay for the day, since I told him my concerns and that my son would not be attending the rest of the week. A few months later I got an email stating I had an overdue account, I explained what had happened and she said she (treasurer, Betty) would look into it. I then received another email back saying there was no record of the conversation and I would still be responsible for the full $150. I even emailed the commodore and wasn't even sent a reply. I am so disgusted by sackawa canoe club I would never ever have thought this would be such a hassle, now they are threatening me with collections. My son has been involved with many sports and organizations in Lower Sackville and have never ever been made to feel like this. I refuse to pay the full week and am ever angrier over the fact that I am basically being called a liar. This was suppose to be a fun experience but was far from it. I would never recommend sackawa canoe club!

I don't know if they're still there (this was just pre-pandemic) and I can't check because he refused to tell me his name. He was abusive to the new students, and I tried talking to him several times just to get his attention off of other people he was being an asshole to. Some people are not meant to teach, but I would give some leeway if he were at least good at it. Without getting too much more specific, you shouldn't be paying every month to put up with some guys personality disorder. I did around 4 classes of this, and decided not to go back for more. Another thing that put me off was that everybody already had THEIR partner, and refused to work with anyone else. This was pretty frustrating and unwelcoming as a new member, and I just had to wait around awkwardly asking people if they wanted to work together. A few times I had to stand there until someone just showed up late. I think this speaks to club leadership. I'll speak more to that. I liked Rad (the head instructor). We had a few chats about cardio and GJJ after class. I was excited to keep coming back and try other classes because of him, but... after taking some kickboxing, It didn't seem like he was interested in being a leader at his own club. Just let people do whatever they wanted, and focused on pushing people for a burner workout. He usually spent class sitting down in the back, whispering with other instructors, and not really doing much to monitor or teach. I would repeat some of what the other reviewers here have said: He's very hands off, and just kind of shouts. Despite the website that preaches "self improvement goals, go at your own pace, we are a family". Most of my past martial arts experience is in an okinawan style of karate, but I've done some boxing and kickboxing before. This is probably part of why 374 struck me the wrong way so much: in karate respect is key, and so is club leadership. Partners were chosen randomly and intentionally mixed up at times. Every technique asked to be thrown is also thrown by the instructor (this was huge for us). Poor behaviour is discouraged, and you'd get kicked out the door for being an unreasonable ass. Going from that to a room full of cliquey students, one complete asshole of an instructor, and a leader that wasn't interested in leading, was jarring to say the least.

Ive had quite a bit of experience in martial arts - mostly between karate and muay thai and I can't…read moresay I was impressed with the quality of instruction. There's clearly some very proficient people in class but they mainly stick to themselves; otherwise most people are beginners. Ill echo another review - instruction is almost non existant in the muay thai and boxing classes. I mean real, technique based instruction. Classes consist of find a partner, do combo on pads, switch, high rep burnout calisthenics and thats it. Not once in nearly a dozen classes did I even hit a heavy bag or thai pads. If you have experience, youll likely not improve, if anything you'll get worse. We were told to clinch and it didn't even seem like instructor knew how to do it; that or he just didn't care to really teach it. If youre a beginner, youre not going to learn the fine points of techniques. For example, it'll be demanded you slip or put pressure on or whatever but youre never shown how to refine and perfect techniques. Beginners are often expected to rely on being paired with more experienced people so they can show them what to do. In addition, my last class there was a terrible experience. Got paired up with the instructor for a "light, playful" round of sparing. No mouth guard or head gear and the instructor just cranked me nonstop. No lesson learned, no tips, no point - just left class with an awful migraine and never went back. Im fine with full contact as Ive actually fought before but don't ask for light, playful sparring and beat the life out of somebody and then offer no constructive criticism....especially from the instructor. No comments on the jiu-jitsu class but in my opinion, go elsewhere. Theres enough black belts in HRM these days. Nevermind that most have never seen the instructor roll or compete so it raises some questions. The diamond in the rough is the wrestling class. Finding an adult wrestling class that is fine with total beginners is nigh impossible. They bring in a different instructor for wrestling and the guy absolute class. He was super patient and gave extra help to myself and my partner as we were both beginners. If he ran his wrestling 2 to 3 times a week outside of 374 Id buy a year of coaching tomorrow.

As a newer member to CGC I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the set up. The cost is reasonable too at about $50/month for a year membership. I haven't taken any classes so I can't vouch for that portion of the gym but I do hang out upstairs in the cardio room quite a bit and so far so good. They tell me it's not too busy during the morning/day. As of yet I've never had to wait for a treadmill. When it is feeling a little "packed" I'll go run laps on the indoor track. It's a great way to get in some nice cross training in between some push ups or perfecting the pull-up. My favorite part about CGC is the pool(s). Olympic standard size and as of yet never too busy to not get a lane. Instead of chloride as standard chemical cleaner they use bromide (much gentler on the skin). Locker rooms (both wet and dry options) are spacious. Lockers themselves are big for that over stuffed gym bag. Showers are kind of funky but once you get the hang of them they're not too bad. And while I don't frequent Subway, it's very convenient to be able to grab a little nosh on the way out.

This review is for a particular staff member who was in need of some serious coaching for customer service. Now, before we went , the site says go at least 45 min before hand to line up and they start to sell tickets half an hour before the swim which was at 7:30 pm. The reason for this insanity of earliness was because of March Break. So we went there for 6:30. We went up to the desk to ask for the tickets and she said they would start selling them at 7:00. No problem, she told us to stand in the line, which is what we did. There was another lady there with her children who was there since 5:30 pm, she thought she could buy hers ahead of time. Policy is No! I understand why this policy is, so I do not have an issue with that. The issue was with the lady , who we believe was management. She proceeded to tell us to leave and come back, that we were interrupting the line of the people who were going in for the 6:30 swim. Please take note, there was no one in a line for the 6:30 swim, they simply walked right up to the counter and we are talking a span of 2 minutes. Now, being the person I am, I simply said , no. I was not going to walk around for 1/2 hour to come back and stand at the end of a line when I am standing at the beginning right now, where is the logic there, I will tell you, There Is None! The other lady, however was not quite so diplomatic, she and the manger started to exchange words. The Manger was telling us to leave and come back, the lady was very unhappy that we were being told to go and do something else and come back. Let's just say, after we all had words with Miss Congeniality, we stayed exactly where we were and within 15 minutes the line was down the hall. Hind-site, we would have left and been at the end of the line. I would hate to hear the conversation at that point. It is unfortunate that she was on duty that evening, as she did not win anyone over, just annoyed everyone. And we all thought she was poor with the customer service. Now, the swim, that was good. Lots of life guards. Great Fun!

Demand for instruction at this club is so high that the waiting list for all age groups is generally two years long. Perhaps because I physically dropped the forms off to the office rather than mailing them, my daughters only had to wait a year before getting in. When September came the three of us had earned the privilege of spending an hour every Sunday afternoon in a big steel building with wonky heating that smells like five hundred pairs of sweaty gym socks. With the exception of the smell, the facility is very clean. The mats and foam cubes in the foam pit were just replaced this year, giving the gym an extra measure of cleanliness. Now both my daughters are of above average height. The older one in particular is double the weight of any Russian gymnast so her exclusion on the Olympic gymnastics team is certain. Despite their physical disparity with the sport, my daughters are benefiting from the high quality instruction. Within three weeks, my three year old was doing, assisted of course, somersaults on the beam. Every minute of class time is maximized. No standing around here. The kids move from apparatus to apparatus doing drills nonstop for the whole sixty minutes. The staff is caring, learning the kids names after only two weeks. Although the fees are a bit on the high side ($150+ per child) for a 14 week session, I have to say it is worth every penny for such a well run activity that really improves your child's confidence and physical skills.
