Sheppard Jewelers & Designs

Before I get to the nitty gritty, I will say the quality of the WORK is very good. I've seen…read morebetter, but I have seen worse. I had my platinum engagement ring and wedding band resized and fused. Cost was a bit high, but not unusual for out here and considering the cost of platinum. I could have sent the work out and it likely would have been less expensive and probably faster (it took over a month!), but I prefer to support local businesses when I can. That being said, I will NEVER give Sheppard Jewelers ( aka Anju's) my business again. On March 16, 2016 I inquired about resizing and fusing my bridal set. Questions asked, sizing was taken, diamonds and platinum authenticated, and I was given a "rough" quote for the work. I was told by the woman (the mother of the gentleman who was helping me) that it should take about 2 weeks, maybe a LITTLE longer, because they send this type of work out to El Paso because (and I quote) "you can't get quality work around here". I told her it sounded good. I figured they'd be back before my anniversary a month away. I gave a $100 deposit and was given a receipt for it with a vague description of my rings and the work to be done. A couple of weeks later, (Friday April 1) having heard nothing, and passing through Alpine around 2pm, I decided to stop in. NOPE, doors locked. Hours posted are 10:30 - 5:30. Oh well, maybe a late lunch.... Now, THREE (3) weeks from initial drop-off (Tuesday, April 5) and I have still heard nothing from the jeweler. I realized that, not only had the timeframe come and long gone, but that I had failed to tell them (& they had failed to ask) which way I wanted my heart shaped diamond solitaire facing. I assumed they would have called to ask, since the lab in El Paso would need that info, but my caller ID and machine showed no calls from them. So, I called and spoke to the nice gentleman again. I got an update - he was a little backed up with other jobs and hadn't started mine yet. I thought my job was going to El Paso? No, his mother was just confused. So, my rings have been there for three weeks, untouched. Ok, I understand. A small family business can get hectic. I explain how I want the rings fused and he understands. He assures me he will begin work very soon. They could possibly be ready by Friday, but more like mid next week. Ok. Still (just barely) before my anniversary. End call. Not 2 seconds after that I question if I told him the correct way to face the heart (it had been several months since I was able to wear them + I have a toddler = marshmallows instead of actual brains). Ahhhhhh! I told him wrong! MY error, just need to call back. I start to leave a message when his mom picks up the line. I just want to correct which way to face the heart...she proceeds to explain that it should be another 2 weeks or so and they had called to ask me about that but I didn't answer. Um, the nice man just told me it should be ready sooner AND nobody called or left a message (I checked). She insisted they had called! not true, but was trying to move on to "another 2 weeks?" when she asks for my phone number - they don't have it. Um. How did you call without my number? So, by the time the conversation was over I was frustrated and confused. Thankfully the very nice man called me back to verify the facing of the ring. To be sure he hadn't misunderstood me. I said "no, you understood perfectly, but my brain is mush and I haven't worn them in so long I got mixed up." We both chuckled and he assured me, now that they had my number, I would be notified of any further delays. End call. April 20 yesterday, having heard nothing, I thought I'd drive an hour for an update since nobody answered the phone. It was about 3 pm, but the doors were locked again, during regular hours. So, I left a message. Today I got the call! Yay! The woman hands me my fused rings. They look good and fit. Ready to pay. I offer my credit card. Declined. Debit card. Declined. WTF? I get her hesitation. Not 1 but 2 bad cards. So, I called the bank, all is fine, and the rep tells her too. THEIR machine isn't working!!! I offer the $200 cash I have and to leave my card info to charge when the reader works or call to pay over the phone. She says just come back tomorrow. No, it's an hour drive WITH a toddler, it's been over a month, please work with me. She refuses and threatens to call the police (like I'm a criminal) because she won't let me leave with MY rings and I am just not ok with driving back and forth if they've got a finicky machine. That's ridiculous! She asks where I went to school because SHE is a lawyer. WTF? I came here to pay, YOUR reader is down. WORK WITH me. NOPE! She finally called her son, who swiped my credit card (which was declined by their bad machine first) on his phone card reader and done. Why didn't she START with that. He is WONDERFUL, treats customers with respect, and is an excellent craftsman. She is AWFUL and needs a lesson in customer service. Never again!!!!
