He was very quiet, not welcoming at all, had dark painted fingernails, chunky rings on and sat behind the counter without even looking up. I was actually looking for an art store but couldn't find it and he didn't know where it was just that they moved a few times. After a few purchases in DQ we left the town to continue our road trip.

You see a few neat spaces, but about half of the spaces within the block are off-limits, including the more interesting library, and both sets of living quarters. (You can only peer into them through windows, hurriedly.) There wasn't as much background or explication as I expected -- nothing at all about Judd's working style or how he used the galleries, for example. Disappointing.

Took…read morethe Judd Foundation tour of "The Block" which lasted about an hour and a half and led by another local artist, Eugene Binder, an acquaintance of Judd. The Block is an adobe enclosed block just off the main street which two large libraries, Judd's office, and his families' living quarters plus one 3-sided wall Judd built inside the outside wall. The Block is maintained as a shrine to Judd who died in 1993, and everything remains as it was when he died. The guide was pleasant, informal, and informative.

The outside had a bit of a western feel to it. On the inside, it was much larger than we anticipated with kid's toys, candy, and books to the right scattered with a variety of other merchandise like knicks knacks, magnets, stickers, cards, postcards, hats, collector's items, and more. When we entered to the other side past the register, however, much more sophisticated gifts in the form of women's fine jewelry, handmade soaps, purses, and women's clothing was nicely displayed. The lady at the register was nice enough, but she seemed to not care so much for kids. I purchased this t-shirt I have yet to wear because it has been so cold lately. It has Willie Nelson, Buddy Holly, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Billy Gibbons and reads "Texas Rockmore" below a Mount Rushmore-inspired photo of the four of them. We were never felt like we were loitering, needed to hurry up and buy something, or too loud. Really laidback. So we loitered, visited, and shopped. Came away with a few cool things that of course we didn't need, but we wanted and would bring joy. Easy to make your way through the store, there's lots of items that promote the history, archeology, geology, astrology etc of the local (50 mile circumfrance+/-) area that would provide good background reading, watching, use.
