The…read morenext day I was visiting shops and needed to go to the restroom and remembered the one in the lobby of the George, right past Hey I Like It Here. I've been visiting Marfa for over ten years and each time it seems more commercialized, crowded, and expensive. This shop is typical of the higher end businesses populating Marfa but they had some nice items such as face and hair masks, candles, t-shirts and a fun assortment of unique soft and hard beverages. I felt guilty about only using the bathroom since I wasn't a hotel guest so I bought a hair mask and pretty silk printed bandana (made in Portland). Unlike many of the other places in Marfa, HILIH was actually open on a Wednesday afternoon. Most businesses we tried to visit were closed even though they advertised themselves as being open. This wasn't totally surprising since Marfa mostly caters to weekend visitors. Service was friendly and accommodating.

This is a review of the Block Tour…read more The tour itself was fine, but charging $20 for a 45-minute tour (the website says 90, but that's just not the case) is ridiculous. You see a few neat spaces, but about half of the spaces within the block are off-limits, including the more interesting library, and both sets of living quarters. (You can only peer into them through windows, hurriedly.) There wasn't as much background or explication as I expected -- nothing at all about Judd's working style or how he used the galleries, for example. Disappointing.

Took…read morethe Judd Foundation tour of "The Block" which lasted about an hour and a half and led by another local artist, Eugene Binder, an acquaintance of Judd. The Block is an adobe enclosed block just off the main street which two large libraries, Judd's office, and his families' living quarters plus one 3-sided wall Judd built inside the outside wall. The Block is maintained as a shrine to Judd who died in 1993, and everything remains as it was when he died. The guide was pleasant, informal, and informative.

They also had jewelry, chocolates and small leather goods, including adorable made in Mexico leather and hand painted key chains in the shapes of hearts and guitars. Ballroom Marfa was closed due to the virus and last time I went they were out of Prada Marfa prints but The Marfa Store had Prada Marfa stickers and postcards! Very friendly service. I love living relatively closer to Marfa, Texas. Previously, Marfa was a flight away; now, it's a…read moredrive away. The peak of Maria's hipster frothiness seems to have passed. It appears to have settled into a more predictable groove. Of course, the reason for this town's fame is Donald Judd's Chinati Foundation. I do my infrequent pilgrimage to Chinati for one reason: to see his '100 untitled works in mill aluminum.' I like choosing the open viewing versus the guided tour option because it gives me time to walk among the aluminum blocks undisturbed in relative silence with no time limit. The sun's angle hit different pieces producing different angles of contrast and shimmer. Being in these two buildings is like standing in a mash up of a cathedral and an after-hours machine shop. So many get frustrated with Donald Judd's work. They place demands on what it all means and they walk out dismissively when enlightenment doesn't happen. I toss out my brain and my thoughts. I don't come here to figure anything out. I walk the aisles and just breathe it all in. It's soothing and gratifying; part of the spiritual reset that Chinati and Marfa can do. P.S. Chinati still doesn't allow photography inside their buildings or galleries. I visited once when a rare exception was made. Almost every other art institution in North America allows non-flash photography. It's time for Chinati to allow for the same.
