GO! It looks like a dainty storefront, but this place has depth! The proprietor has a solid selection of the expected and unexpected. The store is thoughtfully laid out and is quite inviting. We thought we would be there for ten minutes and it turned into much more than that. Additionally, the owner was a wealth of knowledge and so accommodating. This is my very most favorite bookstore in the world! It is an amazing book selection and if they don't have it, they are happy to help get it. I asked for a book recommendation and got a great intro to a series! I also bought a book here for my book club. I was so happy to get to visit. The staff is very knowledgeable and the selection is extensive and seems to be a pretty diverse collection of works by various authors, genres, and interests. This is a must-visit in Alpine. This independent bookstore has all the charm of Alpine along with a great selection of books. I particularly loved the variety and quality of their specialty sections and displays including their section on the big bend area, border issues, poetry, and staff picks. They even have a small used section and a handful of free books. In addition to books they have a selection of puzzles and stationary including cards by local artists. A wonderfully curated bookstore. I bought a copy of Lonesome Dove as it seemed apt for our setting. We then brought our cowdogs and ate outside the bookstore mural. There was a table and two chairs. Highly Recommended. read more

Such a lovely bookstore run by two lovely women. We stopped here this morning on our stroll around "downtown" Alpine and couldn't be more tickled pink. The shop is well-done as it maintains a healthy balance between carrying actual books and what's become de riguer bookstore bric-a-brac. Bonus if you have kids: there's a really cute room in the back with bean bags, etc. where you can look at/read books with your little one. The staff was friendly and we saw Covid safety measures strictly enforced. We were so pleased to support them by purchasing several books and some swag. This is what independent bookstores should be! Happy to give a humble plug to this place with a five star rating. We'll definitely be back on our next trip and fingers crossed that it will continue to exist for a long, long time. read more

I always jump at the opportunity to shop local, and Front Street Books is a quaint local bookstore with a robust selection of books. Front Street has an excellent selection of current best sellers, but the highlight of this bookstore is the local section. This section highlights local authors and I found gems like Tales From the Porch and Valentine (seriously, you should buy and read both of these books!!). The store staff is super friendly and willing to offer suggestions! If you're on a road trip (or a local, but locals obviously know about this spot already) and are looking to 1) shop local and 2) pick up a good read, you should definitely make a stop at Front Street! read more

This is a fascinating bookstore. Located in the middle of a very conservative town the owners of this store are dedicated to bringing both conservative and PROGRESSIVE authors books to this community. Every time I visit Alpine I make a beeline to Front Street Books to see their latest offferings. I am amazed that I find a wider selection at this little store than the behemoth multistore chains. I admire the fact that their stocking decisions are not driven by the latest best seller list. They actually delve into issues and attempt to bring both sides of the issues to their customers. I only wish this store was 400 miles closer to my home. If you are ANYWHERE near Alpine, TX, drop in look around and you will walk out with more books than you ever thought you would. read more

In the middle of a very sleepy main street, this bookstore and the bakery next door are the real highlights. Reasonable new and used stock, including works of local interest, and a few collectible items that are being sold online (currently including some very nice Lovecraft/Arkham House items). The used nonfiction spills over into the building across the street, like a miniature version of Booked Up. read more

It is truly unfortunate that I will be leaving a poor review of your establishment, but my experience yesterday with what I would loosely refer to as one of your "managers" leaves me at point of disbelief over how I was treated and shock over her manner of behavior that has guaranteed that neither I, my friend accompanying me, and probably not without great skepticism, the other patrons in the store at the time, will ever return to frequent what is truly a wonderful book store with shameful management. After amassing a healthy selection of 1/2 price books, I proceeded to check out in the main store. The cashier, a wonderful woman of middle age and possessing a kind face and courteous nature began to ring up my books and called over the manager to confer on some 1/2 price books that were not marked as half off, but had indeed all been gathered off the shelf and were only two dollars each. With some hem-hawing around, the manager with a bit of reluctancy agreed that the cashier "could" price the books as one dollar and proceeded to explain how with the "buy one get one" policy they would be free, and I would just pay for the more expensive ones (of which I had many.) Now, I am a graduate student and all I asked was whether or not it would be cheaper for me if I rang up the purchase as two purchases rather than one (as the cheaper books and another were for my friend, but due to a lack of cash and the separate amounts barely meeting the credit card requirement, I had lumped all the books into one thing and was just going to make it easy) as this would save me a few bucks and not cost the store anything but a few more minutes to swipe two cards (mine and my friend's.) At this suggestion and with a huff like that of an agitated juvenile javelina, the store manager threw her hands in the air and shouted (for the whole store to hear) "well then you just figure it out" before storming off like a child having a tantrum stating rather loudly "Jesus Christ, just give him the books." After receiving an apology from the cashier for her manager (a cashier whose kind smile, good customer concern, and general demeanor would possibly be a much better fit than the terror who currently is representing your store) and we figured out how both the store and I would receive a fair deal. As a community leader and human being, I understand that folks get flustered. But, that is not to say that actions and reactions of individuals, especially those in leadership who are placed as representatives of an establishment need to go unchecked when they are offensive and toxic to creating a positive experience for others. I will probably not return to your store, at least as long as that employee is still "managing" to demean and offend folks like myself, who honestly don't really like being yelled at, accused of trying to cheat someone, and then cursed at in an extremely offensive way for someone in my profession. Awesome bookstore with a great, curated selection of books, magazines, CDs, and a few local items. The store continues across the street with used books and what looks like meeting space. The employees and clientele seem to be very friendly, and I think the store brews up coffee that you can help yourself to for 50 cents. I bought Big Bend Coffee Beans, locally roasted, for $10, and my boyfriend scored three old Batman comic books for $1.50 each. read more

The woman at the counter (could be the owner?) was literally the sweetest human being I have interacted with in so long. She is the woman I want to become. Gone are the rows of book shelves were you could browse to your heart's content surrounded by row after row of books. Instead it's now a huge room with shelves on two sides and a few tables in between. I felt naked just walking around the store. I saw no cookbooks, DIY, old priceless books or used books. There is now a huge children's play area though and a coffee shop is going in where the rare books used to be. I wish the new owners good luck but I will now be ordering books online instead - following book reviews by AddendumAdventure on Instagram. Front Street Book Store was an awesome place. read more

Spectacular local book store - even by big city standards. Wonderful selection of books on "local flavor" for someone who just has to take home a part of Alpine and the Big Bend. The owner goes above and beyond interest in her own store to help organize and promote Way Out West Texas Book Festival each year through the Rotary Club. Great job! read more
