I had a great experience with Promar. I brought a 1963 Porsche 1600N engine to be rebuilt. He disassembled, mic'd all components, put in new bearings, new pistons and cylinders and rebuilt my heads. Etc.... Rebuilt my carbs, cleaned my block and repainted some component. The engine looked great. Had it installed and after a few minor tweaks by my mechanic it ran smooth and sounded awesome going on 6 months. I purchased a reman Ford 5.4L Triton motor from Promar, we received the engine and we should have seen the red flags as a sign to send it back! The cams were pitted, the lifters looked used(well used) and the engine knocked like a Jehovah witness from day one. The engine lasted two years and not even 50k miles before it gave out and we pulled the motor back out, we pulled the heads and you could see down between the pistons and cylinder walls. You could see the hone marks where they honed out the cylinders and put stock pistons back in it. Stay away from Promar, they do not believe in quality work! read more

We purchased and long block from Promar which started overheating almost right after start up. After many hours of testing, required by promar they had us remove and sent the cylinder heads back for testing. They were sent back and about 30 days later the rebuilt heads arrived. We installed them and still the overheating issue. After many more hours of testing they had us pull the engine and send it back. 5 months later we received the engine, install it and it ran fine, no overheat and worked well. We had over 25 billable hours in diag. and repair and recieved $540.00 for us and our customers trouble! I will never recommend this company ever! I needed a new engine for my jeep, I did a ton of research and was not satisfied with jaspar engines, they seem to be made all over from different rebuilders. Promar is in house with strict quality control , they promptly answer any questions and are not trying to sell you "gold" packages for extra super special warranty. Promars 3 years 100,000 miles is the same. I just finished my installation and followed promars break in guidelines and I have to say it feels like a brand new engine. I would recommend anyone needing a new engine to purchase from promar. A good mechanic can see that care goes into their product. Price is fair and service is very good. read more

I bought and paid for a 3.8l six cylinder engine for my 2000 firebird along with a transmission. My mechanic installed it and found smoke right away. His diagnosis led him to believe it's the valve seals that are leaking. I have contacted Mopar for help and right away they told me I have the wrong mechanic!!!! They asked me to take it for a second opinion without even trying to help my mechanic with the problem. I noticed and hope that that review given by another customer does not wind up being my situation where they didn't honor the entire warranty. I will update my situation on a separate review. As I still don't have my car back. I had wrote this review a long time ago. Update: They gave me another used engine. Wasn't rebuilt. It was used. Had to repay my mechanic for the extra work since I needed a car. I would never use this place again. I would never recommend it and I hope nobody ever has to go through what I went through. Exchanged my long block for one of theirs. One of the heads on the exchange block had a nasty tap. It also had a very bad rear main seal leak. The owner was very arrogant, and full of himself. They told me to send it back, so I did. Claimed that the heads were trash. And the rear main was re sealed, since they had a crank grinded it it's max spec. They shipped it back to me and guess what? Same shit. Same tap, and rear main leaked. The only reason I rate them a 2 is because they went over the amount specified in the warranty. That alone doesn't cover the time and headache to coordinate with my mechanic as he charges $75 an hour. He walked away from reinstall since he already knew the work from this shop was shotty and didn't want to be responsible for primate work and I had to find someone else. My new mechanic was a diesel mechanic at ford. We was stumped as to why it kept blowing oil filters off. The shop put the oil pump valve on backwards, so it wasn't regulating pressure. Total nightmare. When I was buying parts from Ford...an ex hanged long block from the dealer would've been cheaper. With a nationwide warranty that included labor. If you own a ford, stay away from this company! read more

I can't say enough good things about this company. I ordered a remanufactured 5SFE engine for a Toyota Celica from them about six months ago and at this point it has a little over 3,000 miles on it. The engine came looking great, and runs like a charm. I dealt primarily with Dave who was very helpful. The engine was shipped to San Diego, CA and I picked it up at no extra charge from my local UPS Freight facility. They loaded it onto my truck with a forklift for free. I had three minor problems, primarily because Toyota has a couple of different 5SFE revisions. The timing belt plates that hold the plastic cover on needed to be swapped from my old engine, the thermostat housing was different, and the oil pan was the newer version as well. All were just swapped in from my old engine with no problems. I am sure if I had contacted Promar about this they would have rectified the situation. I am hoping this engine will last me another 200,000 miles as my old one did, and I am happy I chose to order from Promar. Well worth the extra cost! UPDATE 3/31/2016 The engine has over 50,000 miles on it now and is still running as strong as ever. I have no doubt it will last another 140,000. read more

Let me clarify this review for those that think my first one was funny! I called promar to ask what are their steps and services that they perform on heads, and the cost associated with any and all procedures. I've never had heads rebuilt, so I was new at the time. I wanted to know their process, like after disassembly and cleaning do they machine the surfaces automatically or do they measure them first, do they magma flux for cracks, do they replace all valve guides or just the ones out of spec, same with the valves & springs, do they call me and let me know how many are bad and if I want to just replace the bad ones or all of them! Maybe my question to him wasn't clear, & my first review wasn't clear either, anyhow this place has terrible attitude towards customers! read more

Can't say enough bad about this company or the product that they rebuild. Bought a rebuilt 351 engine from this company 2 months into the rebuild valve springs broke left and right. Oil pressure on this rebuilt engine was 30 lb cold and 19 lb hot what a disgusting mess. The last rebuild engine I did on my own I had 90 PSI oil pressure . Mark and his team sent me an engine for my Dodge Ram 1500 and my mechanic installed it. after about 3,000 miles, the engine through a check engine code. The problem was found to be a "leaking" cylinder. I talked with Promar and the engine has a 3 year warranty. My mechanic removed the head and it was cracked with a repair on it. Promar sent a replacement, but would not honor the labor part of the warranty and they stiffed my mechanic! They did not even reply to his invoice witch is covered in the warranty. These folks do a much better engine or transmission rebuilds than Jasper. I have had two of their engines put in two vehicles over the years and both were even better than a factory fresh motor. Granted they do not install the components so you need a good mechanic to do the job but you will be very pleased with the final result. read more

DO NOT USE PROMAR ENGINE In Patterson N.J. These guys do shoddy work and do not stand behind it. I had a stock 283 rebuilt for $2,000.00. They put in a cam that was way too big for a stock motor. The motor ran poorly I informed them of their mistake and DAVE refused to accept any responsibility. I think his job is to make sure PROMAR does not pay for any mistakes. Eventually had the motor rebuilt with less than 100 miles on it , did I mention it was burning oil. New builder also determined that valve job was done incorrectly installing oversize valves rather than install new guides. They pick up and deliver because they don't want you to see their operation. Years ago, I was the manager of a large industrial machine shop in Alaska. I understand automotive machine shops and the quality control needed to ensure success. Promar is amazing in their attention to detail, tolerances, and cleaning process. Their sales department is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Thinking about getting an engine here? Think twice! The Ford 5.4 rebuilt engine I purchased from them for $3049 didn't last 10,000 miles. Issues from the start, and Promar's response was "keep driving it until it throws a code or breaks down". In other words, they would rather see you stuck on the side of the road than pay a mechanic to diagnose the problem before it got that far. Once it did breakdown (again, before even 10,000 miles) they sent the paperwork and a truck and took my engine four months ago under the guise that they would replace it under warranty. Yes, four months ago, and to date, they haven't replaced it or done a darn thing at all. And now they won't return my calls or emails. So they have my money, they have the engine which blew up in a few months (and my original engine core to boot)...and I have nothing but unanswered phone calls/emails and a truck with no engine in my driveway! Completely unprofessional and now I am faced with filing a lawsuit just to recover my money. Buyer beware! They will take your money, but when it comes to the 'warranty' they have an 'ignore you completely' attitude. I wonder how many people just give up...four months of no running vehicle is bound to break a lot of people but not me, sorry Promar but I told you that I would not be one of your silent victims. Everyone needs to know what kind of 'customer service' you offer your victims and this is it. So let's clarify: Promar took my money ($3049, plus my engine core). They sent me a faulty engine, which they took back to replace under warranty. They have failed to replace the engine for four months. DONT BUY!!! DONT WAISTE YOUR MONEY I purchased an engine from Promar $2149.00 had it for 3 weeks engine broke after loosing a freeze plug I called Dave at Promar about it, sent pics, I was thinking that, I just got the motor installed not even 200 miles on the engine that Promar will stand behind there product and send me a replacement engine and I would send the broken engine back or refund my money. Dave told me to pull out the motor which I have to pay for the labor again, an send the motor back, he said they would probably fix that motor if its there fault it should take a few weeks. I asked him to just send me a replacement motor and I would send this one back he told me that they couldn't do that when that was the process that occur when they took my money. The problem I have with this is I'm with out a car while they inspect the motor there NOT giving me any in writing saying we will take of this problem. I send the motor back to Promar they can tell me anything then and have that motor in there hand to rebuilded and resell again. CHECK REVIEWS ON EBAY,BETTER BUSINESS BUREA DONT DONATE YOUR MONEY there better companys that have no fault warranties and don't use aftermarket parts or just hone only the damaged cyclinders. Consumer Beware, HORRIBLE, the list goes on. I ordered an engine from Dave on 5/1/13 for 1700.00 and had my mechanic install it for 1700.00. I pick it up to find a day later the rear main seal leaks. I called Dave and after his Q&A fluff he says he will pay 45.00 an hour labor where my mechanic gets 60.00. (who works for 45.00 an hour Dave this IS 2013) REALLY. I pick up my truck after new seal and it is still leaking so I call Dave again, this time he says the engine needs to come back but keep in mind he will not pay for any of the seal that was just done. My mechanic gets 1000.00 to R&R so Dave do you actually think I trust to have him take this engine out for you to give me more excuses??? Please do you homework and avoid these guys at all cost because Dave really does not care after the transaction has been made. What a NIGHTMARE!!!! read more

I sent down a Chrysler 413 as part of a full-on restoration of a 1961 Imperil convertible. These guys were sharp enough to note that the one I sent was a '62 and the crank flange was different and would not fit in my '61 transmission. So I sent another one down that had the right crank (but was otherwise ruined); and they put all the right bits into one unit for me. It came back pretty and has run reliably through more than 10,000 miles of cross-country rally work and countless shows and weekend jaunts. STAY AWAY. Bought a motor for my 03 dodge Ram 1500 in Feb 2015. Did not even get 5000 miles on it. Did everything right. Threw a check engine code and it went down hill from there. Has a cracked head (which is why it overheated) and they will not warranty it because it overheated. THEY ARE thieves. This is my son's pick up for college and now he as lost over $3000 and still has no pick up. They sell bad motors and rip people off. They should send him a new motor and pay for all the expenses of putting it in, but no. They are rude also. read more

Paid Promar $2899 for a rebuilt Long-Block for a 2002 Jeep. $1500 more then a used engine but I was told this was a 150K mile engine, it would outlive the car, came with warranty etc. etc. Ran well, no lights...no problem. serviced at the Jeep Dealer per schedule, never towed anything, all highway driving. At 39K miles, engine blows up on start. Called Promar, "engine's out of warranty." Nothing. 3 years and 7 months. 39K miles? really? Refused to accept any responsibility for defective engine. They tried desperately to blame us and even demanded the Jeep Dealer show them "heat strips" to prove that we overheated the motor. Nope, we didn't. Didn't matter, they were just looking for excuses. (PS read the warranty carefully, it is useless unless you want to ship the engine back to Promar and wait for them to repair it) They still refuse to accept any responsibility for their defective engine. When Dave Lohsen started referring to my wife ( a senior engineering manager at a Defense firm) as "sweetie" it was clear we were done. RUN DON'T WALK.
