    Crab feed
    Bobbie R.

This review is for the annual crab feed. Such a huge event. All the food is so good; salad, bread, pasta, shrimp, crab, red velvet cake, wine. Lots of great raffle prizes, bar, live music. Hundreds of volunteers to make it all happen.

I went to project ride for a school trip and I had a blast! We got to handle two horses: Luck and Magic. Magic was pretty rowdy at first since he's new to the crowd. Luck is pretty experienced and used to being around people. We got to groom, palpate, take pulses, and walk the horses. It was my first time around horses and I was slightly nervous but the horse I mainly worked on, luck, made it a lot easier for me. Project RIDE also tends to special needs students by allowing them to work with the horses and such so I thought that was pretty awesome. It's a great learning experience and I feel everyone should give it a shot if you can. They allow volunteers here too!

    A little treat before work!

I came here to volunteer, and to my surprise, there were even younger kids participating. I learned that the minimum volunteer age is 10 years old. Some students were volunteering for school service hours, while others came through different companies and organizations. We joined the second shift from 1pm-4pm. The session started shortly after 1pm with a briefing and task assignments from the group leader. All tasks were explained clearly. The leaders checked on us throughout the shift to make sure we were doing okay and to see if anyone had concerns. Halfway through the shift, we had a 15-minute break, and one of the leaders brought ice cream to celebrate a volunteer's birthday and shared it with everyone. I thought it was a meaningful way to celebrate a birthday while helping a good cause. We actually finished around 3:30pm, and our shift completed: - 5,451 lbs of food packed - 474 boxes prepared for the "No Student Goes Hungry" program supporting students from elementary school through college in Sacramento County. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating, and the facility was clean and organized. Restroom: clean, bright, and decent. If you are interested in volunteering, check out their website and register in advance.

Within all of this stuff, was a bunch of new and lightly used clothing. In the past I have donated clothing to my local Goodwill Express. However, I did some reflection and realized that all of the clothing that I donated was being sold for profit. Going forward, my intention was to donate to an organization that receives the donation(s) and distributes them to underprivileged individuals/families free of charge. Some research led me to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. Upon calling to verify their hours (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 10am-1pm and Wednesday, 4pm-7pm), I gathered all of the clothing and hit the road on a mission to make a difference. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a Sacramento Food Bank employee who eagerly began to load my clothing donations onto a cart. Since a lot of the clothing consisted of dress pants and dress slacks, he proceeded to inform me about a program called "Job Smart Clothing." Job Smart Clothing is a program within Sacramento Food Bank that provides career appropriate apparel for underprivileged individuals interviewing for employment or currently employed. How cool is that? I'm not a representative for Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. However, I will say that they provide an awesome service to the community, and that a little donation goes a long way (individuals who benefit from their services often leave with 15-20 pieces of clothing per visit). Before you throw away that piece of clothing that you think is out of style or doesn't quite hug your curves the way that they used to, think about donating it to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services!

They have a (free!) website where you can make a profile and sign up to volunteer. They partner with almost all nonprofits in Sacramento, so if you are interested in serving food, helping animals or bettering parks/neighborhoods (or anything really), you can check online to see what/when the next project is. They also host some big, city-wide events, like volunteering on MLK Day. Those are pretty fun because so many people show up. There is a Hands On (whatever city) in many places all over the country. I like Hands On Sacramento because: 1, I used to volunteer with them all the time 2. The staff you deal with is great 3. They partner with so many amazing orgs (and there are so many absolutely fantastic organizations in Sacramento - one of the things I am actually impressed by in this generally unimpressive city) 4. The big events they host are fun and they accomplish a lot So yeah, if you are looking to volunteer for a day, for a few months or even longer, you should definitely start your search by looking at what Hands On Sacramento has to offer.

A BIG PART OF MY HEART'S WORK…read more.... Instead of reviewing a bowl of pasta, a sushi roll, or how quickly I got my car back from the mechanic, this is a more special review to me for it has to do with a community service and promoting a worthy cause near and dear to my heart. To this end, I have a LOT of respect for the SACRAMENTO CHILD ADVOCATES (SCA). SCA - a nonprofit legal and advocacy group serving abused and neglected children - has a dedicated staff of social workers and attorneys who work together to provide legal representation for an average of 160 abused and/or neglected children who enter the court system each month. MY WORK INTERSECTS WITH SCA In my work with the State of California, I work amongst the attorneys, the investigators and licensing enforcement officers of Community Care Licensing (CCL). We are enstrusted with protecting the health, safety and welfare of children in care at foster homes, group homes and child care centers. Often these children come from neglectful and abusive backgrounds, and whereas my organization (CCL) is focused on the monitoring of the quality of care provided by these facilities and staffs that interact with children (which means we will shut down bad facilities and we will exclude bad staff from working in such facilities), the SCA serves an extremely important and separate role in protecting and arguing on behalf of the rights of these children themselves. SCA ACTIVITIES In addition, SCA strives to raise awareness about issues that affect foster children in a holistic manner, through youth projects such as, Advocates for Young Adults, the Child Welfare Fund and the Youth Advisory Panel. SCA finds that a stable and consistent dialogue between youth and those that represent these youth as their attorney's and youth advocate social workers is imperative in sustaining a well functioning organization. SCA foresees efforts to maintain strong connections with foster youth through such projects will result in positive outcomes for the youth, as well as take away some of the barriers "the system" often creates for youth. You can't ask for a better organization than SCA in bringing the spotlight of scrutiny to these issues for these children in need. Since it is a NON-PROFIT, that means it is funded by the generousity of people who are moved by SCA's mission: charitable contributions and donations from organizations and people like you and me. There are also fundraisers. In fact, there is a charitable fundraiser coming up for this organization this Saturday, September 25th, which was one of the main motivations for me to complete my review of this organization. If this is along the lines of a charitable cause that moves you, please consider participating in the following: THE EVENT: There will be local "celebrity-chefs" to help raise money to pay for legal services and other programs for foster children in Sacramento County. The event will include a live auction, a cook-off featuring celebrity chefs such as my law school schoolmate - Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully - and Bee columnist Rick Kushman, and a golf-ball drop for prizes. When and where: Sept. 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at a private home in Fair Oaks. Tickets are $100 each and are tax-deductible. Golf balls can be purchased for $25 each, or five for $100. A photo of my id she asked me to forward in another email that she also didn't respond to lol. no I found out my money was no good there when I visited today on my day off. She was at the "new" capitol gym. I waited a little bit for her to get off the phone so she could come and give me a whole song and dance about how she now couldn't set me up with the 10% discount. She said it was only for "first responders". Not her pullin out a laminated copy of the policy to show me teachers not on there lol when I reminded her of her words that since it was on the website, she would honor it. She did the backslide. "I was in the car." "I was confused." "I was picking up my daughter." But she was answering a work phone call lol She tried to blame the website offer on a rogue phantom front desk employee lol yall listen, the way this conversation turned unserious. Unless these front desk people can control the whole YMCA page from their phone. I know she was scrambling because I ain't never even seen half of these kids look up from they device when a member comes to check in (I took my kids there for a couple years doing swim lessons). You mean to tell me they on their iPhone writin code this whole time? Get out lol Needless to say we're just gonna have to find somewhere else to swim. It's not even the 10% that bothers me as much as it's the lack of effort. I feel sorry for the front desk dude who sat there quietly while she blamed him and his coworkers for the deal. I'm sure nobody there is gettin paid enough for that. YWCA need to spend some money on people who want to work because it doesn't look promising. But anyway, that's not my business. Steer clear of that place until they get themselves together.

The weight room and cardio/machine room are also pretty small, but the equipment is mostly good, with squat racks, barbells, etc. There's a large gymnasium with basketball. All in all, this place is o.k., but I could see myself getting tired of dealing with the other members too, and the pool temp really needs to be brought down.
