I took a September 2022 virtual class with instructor John D. John applied his vast project management experience and real-life stories to the course materials, which made them stick. He also told us which parts were important for the exam, which were not, and how to study and prepare for the exam. John was down-to-earth, goes at a good pace, and easy to understand. The only thing I would advice students is the PM Academy practice exam questions are nothing like the actual PMP exam questions. Use the practice exam to get used to the time pressure and learn how to time manage. I would not get hung up on the practice exam and keep on repeating it until you get 75%. As long as you know the material well (at least 50% of the PMP exam is agile) and know how to time manage, then you are good. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed John's class and feel fortunate that I got him as the instructor. I attended a virtual course in March of this year and my instructor was John Dokos. I took my exam this month and passed on my first try. I really took his advice on getting the exam done only a few weeks after the course so the content stayed in my brain. I liked that he used personal experience and stories to explain things to help you get a better understanding. I appreciated all the study worksheets he provided and tips. I took this class in March 2024 with John D, and he was a great instructor. The class is fast and John covers so much material. I took the class in the middle of the day for 2 weeks online. I didn't do any prep for this class, so I was a little lost, I figured I'd just study for the exam after the class. But if you want to get more out of the class, I would at least read the PMBOK Guide so you're familiar with the terms. After the class I took some practice exams, and I wasn't doing so hot, I thought I was studying wrong, so I ended up paying for the $99 PMI practice exam, and that helped me tremendously. That exam helped me figure out what I was missing and what I needed to go back and study from the book or PowerPoint Slides you get from the class. Like most of the comments below, I highly recommend this training, Chris Earle was exceptionally knowledgeable about the information taught. I took the course in December and passed the test in February, the first try. As others have mentioned, the test is different and you must manage your time. And I highly recommend not skipping the breaks, the test will exhaust you so take the 10 mins. As for the training, it's like being a boat captain all your life, taking a class to be a pilot, and you have 4 days to learn how to fly. I attended November 2022 virtual class with instructor John D. John has a rich practical experience on project management skills across various industries. His sessions were always on time, pre-planned, organized and at a good pace. He reached out to us with the pre-study required before the sessions which helped to understand what was coming our way from beginning of the first session. Course format: 2 week live online boot camp Instructor Recommendation: Bill Holmes-5 stars Before you schedule your live class, you can call in to PMA to ask who is available for the times you need and request to be placed in sessions with specific instructors. I highly recommend Bill Holmes. Bill excellently translates the PMP's dry, meticulously comprehensive content, strategies, charts, & calculations into real-world applicable concepts--expertly simplified so students may understand and differentiate what the core concepts are that need to be understood and what are its many add-on details that you should or should not spend time familiarizing yourself with. I am sure that all the PMA instructors are well qualified but my experience learning from Bill was very positive to say the least. During the class, Bill will pause post-review/summary of sections and will go over any questions or clarifications needed from students. (My advice, speak up if you need ANY fraction of clarification at all for concepts during these times. Foundation is important--all the concepts build on each other so if you need to ask for more examples do it--that's one of Bill's strongest qualities as a trainer--they are interesting too.) As for the test, Bill tells you what you need to know vs. what to familiarize yourself with and not memorize (Really helped me strategically study and focus on the core concepts for the test.) He will also sprinkle in what pieces are possibly ever-changing as well so you'll be set up for out of the box critical thinking when applying concepts to your professional role. Because Bill's experience varies working with the government, construction, and tech industries--it makes the examples even more traceable when learning the content. Thanks Bill--I passed my test in 10 days on the first try. Course Review: 4.5 stars -4.5-The presentation deck is a must use-PMA does a nice job with simplifying concepts on paper for the instructors. The order of the concepts is interesting to note--it jumps back and forth to build and rebuild on top of what you learned a few sections prior but from a different/new perspective--a lot. I know this is probably purposefully done to organize the content but it can get confusing quickly--for this reason, I stress that you ask questions to make sure you grasp the concepts (not memorize necessarily just understand) well before moving away from earlier subjects. -4-The questions and answers pool was very helpful for ensuring you understood the knowledge categories well. Though I don't feel like most of the questions were structured like the PMP exam very much, they do help with putting your head in a different space when it comes to applying the concepts to any situation. -4-Practice Exams-These are okay--only because they are pooling from the same pool as the QA questions. Good to get yourself used to taking on questions for 4 hours straight though. -4-Mock Exam-These questions feel harder than the QA ones but are similar. There's only 1. I understand it is so you can review together. Still, I do wish there were more. -5&5-Live Tutoring sessions and mock exam reviews--this is gold. You can email your questions about anything PMP or any mock review question for live review during sessions. If you can, carve out time to attend these--even if you have not prepped questions or anything, just go and listen. Why? 1. It's good to see alternate explanations of concepts 2. It's good to hear what and how your peers are interpreting concepts so you can understand different nuances. Fair warning: It will be dry and not very exciting. But it will be good for you too. -5-The one-pagers/handouts available were very good visual guides to have handy for overviews of how concepts fit together and are needed/used from an eagle eye point of view. -3-Flash cards- This is nice that this is offered but I found the definitions very rigid like the PMBOK. I personally like explaining concepts to myself in my own words when it comes to flash cards. Would have been great if you could edit these or add notes to the answers and use them on mobile. Last notes--Recs for my future peers. -Download the PDF version of the slides with the notes lines on it and edit the PDF to take notes on your computer. Use the bookmark tool to help you create a custom outline for you to understand and find important concepts. Ctrl F everything when revisiting concepts. -QA-Following Bill's advice--Do 30 questions a day during boot camp (when Bill says to start) and everyday leading up to test post boot camp. I made a separate flash card deck for items I either misunderstood or missed the mark on to re-review. -Mock exam once a week to see low scoring knowledge areas and review. -Anki-Use these for creating digital flash cards--way better tool using spaced repetition. I attended the on-line 4-day boot camp in Nov 2021 instructed by Gregg Richie. I think both the course and Gregg rate 5-stars. The course - I used the course as my first step in preparation for taking the PMP Exam. I think the course provided a fantastic overview of PMI's Proj Mgt philosophy/methodology. As well, it gave me a roadmap of what to study, and how to prepare for the exam. The follow-on tools and support provided by PMA are great as well; especially the mock exams and practice tests. I couldn't have passed without them. The instructor - Gregg is a fantastic instructor, and a natural mentor. Gregg brings significant knowledge and experience to the course, I am sure many instructors do. Where Gregg absolutely shines, is his genuine passion for the subject material and teaching the students. A positive energy radiated from him throughout the 4 days. I know, that is a bit "over the top", but it is true. I have 30 yrs of classes and instructors behind me, and Gregg stands out. He created a virtual class environment that was full of energy and got the students engaged asking questions and sharing experiences. I passed the exam the first try above target in all three areas. Without the class, the follow-on support and Gregg's instruction, that wouldn't have happened. I am so glad that I signed up for the PMP prep virtual course with Project Management Academy in June '23 with John D as instructor. I signed up for PMA based on colleague recommendation. I called and spoke with a very nice and helpful CX agent as I had concerns over my ability to pay attention during a 4.5 hour zoom lecture course. I was told it's interactive and they keep it engaging. That is not what I was delivered. the experience is sitting on a zoom for 4.5 hours while the instructor is reading slides to me. My mind goes numb after about 40 min. Maybe that works for you - but I would much rather have a shorter class time commitment with break out sessions / discussion say once a week over several weeks to learn and absorb vs sit there and be read to. You'd honestly be better off following classes on youtube. read more

I attended a PMA 4-day live workshop for PMP certification training in October 2019. John Dokos was our instructor and he was great with regards to content delivery and pointing out tips and tricks for the exam throughout the workshop. The materials shared were informative and came in handy for exam preparation. The strategy guide and ITTO handout were especially very useful. John was extremely detailed in the sessions and consistently provided examples that we could relate to the information shared for all knowledge areas. Wow. My brain is full of information! I just finished the 4-day virtual boot camp with Russ Thornley. TIP: Take this course closer to when you plan to sit in for the PMP exam to keep the concepts fresh in your mind. I unfortunately have to wait to apply for the exam until the next fiscal year so that I can get reimbursed by my company (I've used up my educational assistance funds for this fiscal year). Any way, I was really looking forward to learning the industry standards of project management but was dreading the all-online endeavor. Russ Thornley's style of teaching truly made this experience exceptional. He explained complex concepts clearly and simply which made the material easy to digest. His pacing was well done considering we are cramming a lot of new information in 4 days. Most importantly, he provided real life vs. PMI standard examples which emphasized the concepts even more. I couldn't have asked for a better instructor! As far as everything else: -I received the print materials (PMBOK guide, study guides, tip sheets) well before my online class (impressive!) -The PMA website portal allows access to the course materials plus practice exams -The online webinar was really well done (we experienced very little technical difficulties - nothing major) I've been a project manager for a few years but getting the formal education on project management was so worth it! I took the 'Oct 2018 Virtual' class session option that occurred this past weekend. The week before class began, course materials were delivered (ITTO charts, a study/reference guide, course book with all the slides, and of course the PMBOK). Class runs for 4 days from 8:30am - 6pm, although we were usually done a bit earlier. My instructor, John D, was very knowledgeable and patient through these intensive days. He kept us on track and helped us understand the material by sharing real-world examples. This also helped to break up the 'monotony' of the lessons, though I will say these lessons are WAY more exciting than self-study of the PMBOK. In addition to studying the slides, I did the following: - Completed all of the 'to-do' in the introductory email before class, including the Pre-Assessment - Answered the Lessons questions at the end of each section (I did this during the lessons) - Created and filled in my own 49 Processes chart with description, input/output, tools and techniques per recommendation of our instructor (I also did this during the lessons) - Took the quizzes at the end of each video tutorial on the PMA portal under 'Course Outline' - Completed the workbook exercises I took my test 2 days after class ended and passed at 'Above Target'. read more

I attended John Dokos' weekend version of this 4-day course from June 1st-2nd and 8th-9th. Prior to the course, PMA sends you a number of course materials to accompany the online class including the PMBOK, a bound book with the Course Slides, a list of ITTO's, a strategy guide to taking the PMP exam, and a guide to Agile. Also, the PMA website itself has mock exams, video recordings that review the slides, flash cards, etc. The materials alone makes this course worth every penny. John was very knowledgeable and through in his instruction and made sure our that our level of engagement remained high. He patiently answered all of our questions both on and offline. He made the course easy to follow by relating each scenario to different industries as well as his own personal experiences. As of yesterday, July 1st, I am happy to report that I am PMP certified! That's right...After 3 weeks of having completed the course, I took that very difficult exam and passed it in one try. This was a lecture for almost 7.5 hours a day. There were 10 minute breaks, a break for lunch, and some review questions but there is a limit to how much the brain can process simply by listening to a lecture. This is strictly a test prep course. There was an expectation that there would be active learning in this course, as it was presented at Stanford, but that was not the case. I spoke with 5 other people currently in the class and they are disappointed as well and not getting much from the lecture style. The instructor has given this class many times and has memorized the slides, so he isn't reading them but he's sharing the same information, almost verbatim. The examples that he shares are often about manufacturing and managing large government defense contracts; things that no one in the room will be doing. We all work for the university or SLAC and need the information to be relevant to our work. In order to take the certification test, there are requirements for number of hours or experience in PM. I and others in the course may not meet those requirements. These should have been listed and required as pre-requisites to sign up for the course. This is one of the worst classes I have ever participated in. read more

She has 20+ years of corporate experience and provided us real world examples in class and was very open to questions from the class itself. I wanted to take an in person class but unfortunately due to Covid it was changed to an online class. I am glad that it was changed to an online class because Stephen Hoogerwerf was my instructor and I enjoyed the way that he presented the information. Following completion of the course he sent an e-mail to his students with study tips and articles useful for our study. Due to family issues and work, I got sidetracked after completing the course. I contacted Jeff few months later and explained that I would need his help on how to get started after a long hiatus. PMA PMP Exam Prep Boot Camp is hands down the best source for exam preparation out there. I took the October 2021 virtual class with John Dokos and it was worth every penny! Thanks to John and PMA, I had no trouble in passing above target in all three domains. Before taking the class, I took their initial pre-class 50 question baseline assessment, I scored a 56%. AFTER the class, I took the full mock exam and scored a 71%, a full 25 point jump! With the detailed report breakdown by domain and even tasks that needed the most improvement, bringing my score up even higher was a snap. John has a lifetime of invaluable experience that he used to illustrate many of the project management processes and concepts. PMA's teaching structure follows the new PMI EOC and even cover what to expect when taking the exam along with many useful guides including an exam taking strategy guide to develop your question analysis skills.
