There is of course this gallery, but there is also the Galleries at CSU at the other end of the next block. Anyways.... This was a cool spot. I first wandered in as I was taking a walk around downtown. I didn't realize the place was between shows and not really open. I wandered in the first set of doors and yanked at the second only to realize I would have to be buzzed in. A lady quickly noticed me. At this point I had gotten a better look inside and saw it didn't look quite ready for visitors; I was expecting her to turn me away. But she was very nice, let me in, gave me some flyers on upcoming events and invited me to walk around and even go downstairs to where a second gallery was being set up. She kept saying she was sure I would like it better if I came back for their opening reception night, but I actually liked it at this visit. There were some things you couldn't get a good look at because they weren't set up yet, but it was cool to see the place in a state of transition. Not often does the average person get to see a gallery with paintings on the floor, some wrapped up still, others leaned upon others. Such a presentation could be a whole contemporary art exhibit of its own...but I digress. I did return after the opening night and was even more impressed. My only negative comment would be the lighting. I think it was just too full force and not really needed to the extent it was used. However I liked all the art - there's even some in the workers' offices on the first floor. All of it is for sale - $750.00 to $10,000.00. Free admission. This is more than just a gallery. They service paintings in what looks to be a sizeable backroom. You can come here for restoration or framing needs.

If you've been on her site, you've probably seen it. It is a painting of some Irish sheep on a hillside, reminiscent of a contemporary Alfred Morris piece. It had hung over my in-laws' coal-burning fireplace for more than 40 years. It was covered in soot, and the varnish had discolored and deteriorated terribly. The frame was in such bad condition it didn't make the trip from Ireland. Caroline made it a true Labor of Love, and the results are astonishing. The image is far brighter now, and she not only cleaned it up, she removed the bad varnish and replaced it with a new, clear, much more durable one. We found a frame selection that we felt was perfect for the image, but were thrown a mean curve ball--it was discontinued, and the manufacturer was out of business. Undaunted, Caroline literally scouted the country for it, and struck pay dirt with a small distributor in the Seattle area. They had just enough stock to complete the project, and we are ecstatic at the result. A full step-by-step video of the process of her cleaning and restoration of the piece is on the Uptown website, and is a wonderful showcase of her care and ability. I can recommend her without reservation, and going forward, I would not trust anyone else to even touch my art. From the first interaction of outlining our needs until the event wrapped up - everything ran smoothly and was just perfect. I was incredibly nervous the day of our event, but the Dove team was so composed and efficient and did everything with such ease and mastery that it calmed my nerves, too. Best of all, their pricing was great! We received a referral for them, so we were concerned they might be too expensive for our budget, but they actually took our needs into consideration and worked to keep everything under budget. They even added a couple of items that I didn't request (as I didn't know how much it would add to the feel of the event) and included a few free upgrades, as they had just upgraded their equipment. All in all, I can recommend them with the highest confidence! They are excellent at what they do, brilliant in execution, professional and courteous in their interactions, and just an all-around great company to work with.
