I consider PMA my second home and I hold nothing but praises for this outstanding martial arts establishment. The instructors are not only exceptionally knowledgeable in the art in which they teach, but they are also focused on trying to give each student an equal share of individual attention to help develop their skills. Their teaching methodologies are diverse and top notch helping one progress to the next level whether if it's from simply being a novice, all the way up to becoming an amateur fighter. Amongst the students there is a strong sense of camaraderie where we train together, spar together, and learn together. I've personally seen where many senior students will help along a more beginner student with advice and guidance. It's an atmosphere where students from diverse backgrounds and experiences can genuinely learn from each other and grow in mind, body, and spirit as martial artists. The facility and the equipment within the establishment is immaculate and well maintained. Whenever there is a rare instance of equipment failure, it is promptly repaired or replaced. The facility boasts equipment such as Fairtex training bags, a mini boxing ring, a free weight section, as well as ample locker/shower rooms, all of which are kept in peak condition. New pieces of equipment are introduced fairly regularly phasing out the old and worn equipment. For me, Progressive Martial Arts is a phenomenal place to study the art of Muay Thai Kickboxing and I'm honored to be able to train/study my discipline here. I, no we love PMA. My kids were nervous at first when I said you'll be starting marital arts. But once they started they look forward to going each time. The kids get to have fun with the warm ups and games they get to play at the end of each class. The also are focused while learning the martial art techniques. The instructors and staff are all awesome and are really good with kids. The school is in a great location and also clean. They take all the covid safety requirements and makes sure everyone entering is in a safe place. Total recommend this school for anyone interested in learning marital arts. read more

My sons have been going here for 2 years now and we're very happy with their progress. The teachers and staff really care about the kids. I like the fact that there are age appropriate levels and classes. The little kids aren't mixed with the bigger kids. I took off a star because it's a little on the pricey side. The school itself is small, but the class space is pretty big. They have a curtain which separates 2 classes going on at the same time. Parents can also observe while their children are in class. They recently did renovations so that there's more space in the waiting area. It can get crowded, especially during Saturday classes, but that just means business is doing well. On top of learning martial arts, the kids are assigned homework with a word (i.e. discipline or respect) to focus on. They really want to teach kids values as well as skills. If you want your kids to learn self defense and learn valuable life lessons, I highly recommend this place. read more

So let me start by saying I purchased a 3 class trial for $20 (great deal) and the classes & teachers seem awesome! HOWEVER, I am APPALLED they make 3 year olds wear masks during the entire duration of class. I understand when it was mandated there was no way around it, I wouldn't enroll my child during that time, BUT now that mask mandates are lifted and individual businesses can choose whether they want masks or not, I cannot believe they would continue forcing children to wear them. Adult gyms are now mask optional, the fact my child has to struggle not only to breathe, but also constantly fixing the mask completely loosing train of focus during a 30 min PHYSICAL WORKOUT is RIDICULOUS and honestly quite shameful. Besides all that, they want $180 a month the for 2 30 min classes a week. Sad to say, we won't be returning because of the mask issue and will be looking for a place that lets my child breathe. read more

I wouldn't recommend going here, its a great space with good trainers, very diverse martial arts styles but the programs are very limiting. Many of the trainers and top students have left because of how the school is managed by sifu Nick Saculous. If you are looking to do Muay Thai or Jiu Jitsu you are going to have to go through their "Phase 1" program which is JKD based. Has nothing to do with Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai. I trained here for 7 months paid in full and was promoted to orange belt in their JKD program but not allowed to take any higher classes unless I changed my contract and paid more money. I had paid in full for my six month contract and would have to pay more money for advancing, I ended up paying an extra $200 in order to take Jiu Jitsu. Even their Phase JKD program is limiting since the school does not teach arm trapping or weapons which is fundamental in JKD. If you want to waste your time and money stay away, their unlimited program was $300 dollars in 2011 I can only imagine how much it is now. Oh and for Queens ppl stay away from Nubreed same nonsense going on there. read more

Psychologically, because they deduct a reasonable amount of money from my account every month, I will give this place a good review in order to avoid cognitive dissonance. Well, besides that little tidbit, I honestly like coming here. The staff is nice and friendly and so are the students. You'll get out of the courses what you put into it... especially since they let you set your own boundaries on your physical limitations-- this is important if you're a girl, and a weakling at that. But you can see that there is a level of intensity that most of the students and instructors apply in their training. I tend to goof off a bit, especially since that's my method of defense when I'm not performing well, but everyone really seems interested in helping you improve, which is great! read more

I've been going to PMA for almost four and a half years now, and it amazes me how much I have grown as a person: physically, mentally, and emotionally. Once I stepped foot into PMA, all the instructors and students were very welcoming. The atmosphere of the school is like no other; it's always positive and the people take the time to get to know you. With this, I made plenty of friends and PMA, over the four and a half years, has no doubt become my second home. I look forward to going to the classes because I'm given the opportunity to get a great workout and learn from experienced instructors. The instructorss, in every drill, focus on every student and give their best advice on how the students can improve their punches, kicks, forms and various techniques. The teachers helped me improve my sparring skills and gave me beneficial advice in whatever areas they deemed necessary. They really take the time to get to know you and benefit you in any way. In the classes we work on the pads, shields, knee bags, boxing bags, and often spar in the ring. In the Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes, the teachers always made them enjoyable, while still giving the students and me a great work out. On December 4th & 18th, I tested for my Black Belt. The test was very challenging and required a lot of mental toughness. I received my black belt and it was one of the proudest moments in my life. The teachers prepared me and trained me hard. I'm so thankful for all the support they have given me. Nick Sacoulas, the founder of PMA, is very passionate about all of his students. He is always striving to improve classes to benefit the students. He is a great man and has supported me continuously through my journey of a black belt. I'm so grateful to have him and Eric R., another head instructor, as my teachers in my classes. I have benefited so much from their knowledge and amazed about how much knowledge they have acquired through their decades of experience in the arts. I recently decided to cancel my membership with Progressive Martial Arts, leaving me to pay 50% of my left-over tuition (Around 546.00.) I decided to cancel because I did not enjoy the classes and couldn't justify having to pay 154.00 a month for something I didn't enjoy (for only 2 classes a week - other schools in the area would allow to you to go more often for the same price or less.) I think it is very important to note that the free initial session you first have with a coach is not representative of the classes you will be taking. I felt pressured to decide whether to sign a 12 month contract the day of my free class due to being told that the promotion was for that day only and if I decided to sign on a day after, I would have to pay full-priced tuition. Also, keep in mind, you will be placed in (100 level) Foundations Striking class before choosing whether to pursue (200 level courses) Muay Thai or JKD, with the latter containing sparring portions. I would often feel lost in class because I was asked to do certain techniques (such as blocking during sparring) which I was not taught in Foundations Striking. Also, the equipment for the 200 level courses can cost around 240.00 (including tax), however, it would be cheaper to just buy the equipment off of amazon. The class sessions can vary in size based on participants. Usually, the classes are 10 - 15 minutes of a warm up and then the rest of the class is the lesson which will be taught by a coach. Sometimes the classes can get chaotic. I had a lot of difficulty in class remembering techniques due to learning issues (ADHD and memory challenges), so if you have learning challenges, this may be something for you to consider. My experience wasn't the most positive and if I could have done it over, I would have not enrolled in the school, having to cancel was a stressful process and now I am out a significant amount of money. I will however, give this school 2 stars because some of the junior coaches are very supportive, and the school tries to offer good customer service to resolve issues. Some of the lessons I learned from my experiences were: 1. Apparently, I'm really good at being punched in the face (which wasn't the best for my self-esteem.) 2. Always read contracts fully before signing them, don't let yourself feel pressured into signing a contract. 3. Observe classes after your initial free class before making your final decision. read more

PMA is a great place to get trained. I have wanted to learn martial arts for the longest time ever since i was a child. It was difficult for me to decide on what type of martial arts to choose. With all the different choices out there. With PMA, there are so many options. from JKD to brazilian jujitsu to kali and much more. I sound like im promoting but i been going here for 6 months and i love it. Im renewing for another 6 months soon. The instructors are all very friendly, and knowledgeable and everything is hands on. partnering up and actually doing on a partner what is taught. The only con is that it is pricey. Good Gym...... Pro's - You will get a lot of training. There are plenty of hours and plenty of equipment. All in one facility. They have BJJ, JKD, Muay Thai, and kids classes. Con's - You will be paying for it. You will pay around 200 for a gym usage fee and about $20 per class per month. So if you do unlimited you might end up paying easily 300.00 . So if you think paying damn near $300.00 per month is a good deal go for it! You can get a yearly membership to a gym ($400), a year at a martial arts school ($1500 on average), and get 4 international trips to the Caribbean with hotel. Some of their own instructors train at other schools, so apparently it isn't that great of a value! read more

I was deconditioned and uncoordinated and I worked with Tony who really helped me improve in all those areas. my son (7 years old) goes here for jeet kune do. he's been here since june of 2009 and it has been a great experience so far. they pace the kids in class to move up from belt to belt without pushing them. i love all of his instructors, they are all sweet to the kids and end the classes with high fives. they even know how to handle tantrum prone kids. they teach discipline and power words, which is a great thing. in our neighborhood, it's the average price of any martial arts school. so if you are willing to pay the tuition, it is worth it. read more

I send my children here because I want them to learn perspective and balance in life. Yes, it's true that most parents send their kids to martial arts so that they can defend themselves in a fight. However, for me, it's equally important to learn that just because you are fully capable of kicking someone's ass, it doesn't mean it's wise to do so. My family has been with this school for over 5 years. I attended an open house and was hooked on the staff, who made us feel so welcome. Since then, my son, now 10, is a brown belt. He has made tremendous strides in his confidence and physical skills. It wasn't until he was a blue belt that he started to instinctively use his martial arts to defend himself in school. My daughter, 7, is learning and loves it. Her instructor developed a special program just for her so that she could continue training despite a broken arm. My younger son, 3, just started and loves it. My husband also trains at the school because it was his lifelong dream to learn martial arts and loves the training and programs available to him. I just recently joined the JKD program. I've always wanted to learn martial arts but didn't really think I could do it because I'm a small framed woman who doesn't have much strength. Sifu Nick kept trying to get me to join and after 5 years, I decided to go for it because I felt safe. It's been about a month now and I love it. The staff and students are all very supportive of each other. I told my husband that "I'm 42 and just started learning martial arts. What are the chances that I'm going to get into a fight with someone?" He replied, "what are you talking about? It's always the old ladies that get attacked." He's absolutely right and for that reason alone, I believe all women should learn martial arts. I'm learning what to do if someone attacks me and getting physically stronger. I am going to be so ready when someone attacks me in my wheelchair in my old age. If you ever wanted to learn martial arts, then come join this school. My family member got their black belt in mixed martial arts here recently, so I definitely know a lot about this institution (from the past 10 years) and let me just say - I would NOT recommend. This is not to say they didn't teach my family member well, but the FAVORITISM and MONEY GREED the people that run this institution show is not in line with the discipline they teach the kids. You can definitely get an equal education from an institution that doesn't deal w a student kicking another student in the groin during a black belt test by running up to the family ASKING FOR MONEY for a groin guard during the TWO minutes they are given to comfort/encourage the child to go on with insane amounts of pain during one of the most important, and grueling, tests of his life. Not to mention the fact that the student who kicked him in the groin was not on par with a black belt level by any means, and still given a black belt. Avoid if you don't want to be squeezed of money and/or if severe favoritism at a disciplinary place bothers you. read more

I am a complete beginner and an adult and a woman, I've been going here for 5months now, I just moved up to level2. It's great and I love it. i'm obsessed. I'm there every single day. Tony is a really good foundations striking coach. He taught me everything I know so far in striking and i'm happy. I have not spent as much time with the other instructors - but I'm excited to learn from them for level2 classes. I don't like that there is no shower for the women's locker room. They have one only for men. The training floor has all the fun bags and tools you need though. Everybody in the adult classes are nice and friendly. i don't understand why I had to buy overpriced unnecessary gear for level2. that bothers me. I can buy the same equipment cheaper. or better equipment for the same price. I also needed focus mitts- but i received my kit without focus mitts for a discount, and I got a bag which I did not need. I hate wasting my money. I am a very prudent shopper and I always like to pick out my own things bespoke to my body and my style! With that being said it's part of the martial arts Business side. And every school does this apparently. But I don't mind paying $229/month for unlimited bjj&striking classes because I appreciate the teachings sooo much, to me that's most important. So all in all, great instruction&great training floor equipment, and nice people. read more
