They do not pass out any medication indiscriminately. They do pill counts, drug testing and keep up with current research. The American Medical Association has recently come out in support of pain management at a time when this is a difficult area of medicine to practice. There are many medical conditions that do not respond to alternative pain treatments and sometimes opioid medication becomes necessary for optimal functioning. The current body of research now clearly shows, without any doubt, that pain medication prescription rates and overdose rates have no statistical relationship. None. Zero. Zip. Overdoses resulting in death are almost always a result of illicit opioids like heroin & illegal fentanyl, polysubstance use and occasionally diversion of prescription medication used by someone it was not prescribed to. This is typically a result of poverty, hopelessness, lack of employment opportunities, etc. If we hope to combat overdose rates in our state, we need to start fixing the problem rather than hurting patients in need. Alcohol & tobacco also kill significant numbers of people and our country largely ignores that. I've been in Pain Management for roughly 12 years. During this time, I have seen the landscape…read morechange immensely because of addiction, abuse, etc. and the introduction of local and federal laws that severely impact people like me who follow the rules and do whatever is necessary to help maintain a somewhat "normal" life. Kure is a big chain that swooped in a took over many of the small practices in the area. With that said, I stayed on because the Physician's Assistant who has been with me for these 12 years stayed and she knows me best. Since this takeover, I have experienced much frustration. Let's just start with the fact that I have never met any of the doctors other then when I go in for a procedure. The first time I had a procedure scheduled, I was subjected to sales pitches for spinal cord stimulators before and after my procedure. I have since refused to schedule with that particular doctor. On many occasions, my prescriptions were messed up or denied and needed action from the staff. If you call the main number, you be immersed in to an endless maze of menus and people who will say they'll help you, but do nothing. I've had to physically walk in the office to get my issues resolved on numerous occasions! I've experienced last minute cancellations for procedures where I was off of certain meds for two weeks to prep. In addition, I've shown up at the locations I was supposed to have the procedure only to find out it was moved to another location without my consent. If it wasn't for my Physician's Assistant and the fact that she's AMAZING, I'd be gone. This company is all about the profit and pushing bodies through, not about the individual care.
