The guys at Pro Gear are incredible! Was in a very unfortunate incident with AAA in January where they dropped my precious 4runner and bent my back end badly. Original quotes were close to 10k. They held my truck for me through entire litigation process of about 5 months, keeping me fully updated and saving me multiple extra tows. At conclusion AAA and towing company both denied liability, completely skrewing me over. John went above and beyond to source better options for me and was able to bring my cost to 3500!!!!! Insane! Unfortunately, I have to update my review. I'm giving more stars than really deserved for the quality of work performed but they have been very nice. However, being "nice" does not justify the fact that I just had to replace the rear differential for the 3rd time in 5 years. This vehicle has never been used for off roading!! Being that the vehicle was about 40 minutes away and had already been towed to another shop, towing it back to Pro Gears was not ideal and that was all they could suggest I do. Pros: It's been 6 months since I was here and wanted to wait to make sure everything was running fine to review. Everything seems to be working and running well and the regear feels 100x better than it was before. I Shattered my rear differential on a trail and brought it here to get re-geared as I had to get it repaired anyways. Isaac was extremely nice and informative and open to questions, great guy. The cons: When I got my truck back I parked it and it was leaking a ton of red gear oil out of the cv boot. Had to bring it back in for them to repair and repull my axle all over again. They claimed it was their tech damaged the seal before putting it back in with the cv axle. They repaired it no extra charge but still annoying to bring it back and wait for 4 hours for it to get done. My tires were aired down when I dropped off and I asked if they'd air them up once they fix the diff so it doesn't wear the tire tread (after a regear they do the first easy break in shakedown to make sure everything's running well). They did not air up my tires before taking it on the pavement for a test run and I when I picked it up they were still aired down to 10psi.. Not good for the tires at all... I brought it here in hopes for quick turnaround. It was good but an extra day than I was initially told which isn't too bad overall but still eh. read more

I'm a small independent used vehicle dealer. I had an older Toyota Tacoma that was making a shuttering sound only under certain circumstances, and not easy to duplicate. I had it back to my main mechanic three separate times and they couldn't figure out the problem. Finally, I took it in for an evaluation to Pro Gear. They took a drive with me and spent about 25 minutes driving around, trying to duplicate the problem and then even let me drive the truck to see if I could make it happen. I think on our test drive it happened maybe 2 to 3 times. We got back and I left the truck for full evaluation hoping it wasn't something inside the transmission. After they went through and inspected the vehicle, they called me and said it was their opinion that it was most likely a broken transmission mount they found and another one. My main mechanic didn't find either. They suggested that we repair these and there was a very good chance that it would correct the problem if not it was something in the transmission, possibly the torque converter. It was their opinion however that replacing these two mounts would correct the problem and they were 100% right! What a relief. I have taken both a 2003 and a 2011 Crown Victoria here that were both retired police vehicles and these guys got my axles straightened out. If you have a rear differential in your vehicle then you should really change your fluid and these guys are the place to go. Kraig and crew are a professional & friendly organization that do superior work. I originally took my newly purchased used Wrangler to the Jeep dealer to have work done and they did not want to touch the gears and suggested I take it to Pro Gear. I set an appointment to have the gears swapped since I was adding larger tires and the suggestion was to put in 5.13 with the 6 speed manual trans on the 2009 Wrangler. Kraig helped me find some custom diff covers I purchased on Amazon, and also let me drop off the new 35" wheel package I bought from a third part too. Kraig corresponded back and forth with me over email in the days leading up to the appointment and ensured that the items I had purchased on my own would suffice. They installed the gears, and also let me drop off some bump stops that I brought in since one of mine was broken and rattling inside the coil. They did not charge me extra but did the work anyway despite being busy - obviously they just wanted to keep the customer happy. The work was done on time and the car looks great. I took the car around the block for a quick spin before driving home and noticed the steering wheel was slightly off center by less than an inch so again, the owner took time right there on the spot to get under the car, twist a few twists and straightened the wheel before I drove home. They were honest, explained the work done in detail, and never did I feel like they were selling me things I did not need.The entire team at Pro Gear is pleasant to deal with and is nothing compared to the experience you might get at some other Warehouses that specialize in Off Road services. This small business knows how it's done and I will be a repeat customer for both my Jeeps from this point forward. The choice to add 5.13 gears was spot on. Took my 2014 mustang in a while ago and changed my 2.73 gears out with 4.10's Moments after driving out, I felt the driveshaft shake and vibrate once i took my foot off the gas. I called them back up and they told me to bring the car back in. After they 'diagnosed' the issue, they told me that I should buy an $800 single piece driveshaft to fix the vibration. They claimed there was 'too much rotating mass' on the dual-piece shaft. $2000 later, I still have the same exact problem. They told me they couldn't figure it out and eventually left me with a messed up differential. I strongly advise taking your car to San Diego Gear & Axle instead. Much better (and dependable) service, that won't leave you with a semi-drivable car. read more

The only gear shop in San Diego you should go to. Back in April or so, my Dodge 9.25 rear end let loose with a c-clip failure and chewed up the housing. Not only did Justin take the time to talk to me about how and where this failure happens, he saved me hundreds, maybe a thousand dollars, by telling me of another rear end that I could salvage at a junkyard and have them re-gear, that was almost guaranteed to not have the same issue. A perfect donor pumpkin. They got my entire truck regarded to 4.56 with an Eaton Detroit Truetrac in the back in just a couple days. Great people and professional work. read more

Took my chevy to these guys based on a recommendation. Problem was a bad wheel bearing. Asked for and received "worst case scenario" repair estimate. After the car was on the rack and rear end torn down, the estimate vastly exceeded the "worst case scenario" Sensing a lack of ethics on behalf of Pro-Gear. I asked for my car back. I would recommend Pro Gear to anyone needing differential service because they are quick, honest, and reasonably priced. I do not give out 5 Stars often, but Pro Gear earned 'em. Pro Gear repaired the final drive on my E46 BMW. They removed it, diagnosed it, ordered and received parts, and installed it in less than a day. And at a hourly rate that is about 30% less than what the Dealer charges. While they seem to work on alot of desert 4x4s, they are comfortable with sports cars too. Pro Gear was straight with me at all times. Kraig the owner scheduled me for the day after I called, recorded the symptoms, and quickly wrote me up for a $0 estimate. He called me back with an estimate and kept to it. They charged me for 2 hours plus parts. Some shops leave you wondering if you got ripped off or not. I always felt that Pro Gear was honest with me every step of the way. Pro Gear is a specialty shop; they just do differentials. These jobs require special tools, knowledge and experience to do it right. If you hear strange squeals or clunks from your rear end, or you find oil leaking from it, take it to them. Pro Gear will inspect your diff and give you a free estimate; it the problem isn't your rear end, they'll tell you and won't charge you. You can take it to Tony down the street, but he'll end up taking it to Pro Gear if the problem is your diff and charge you for the time. read more

I brought my car in to have them look at the transfer case which I knew was damaged. Things started out well and they seemed very professional and straightforward. They spoke english too... which is rare in the mechanic business in San Diego... so it was much easier to communicate with them. I had to really ding them on the stars though because they told me that the transfer case was bad and that the front differential was good. They said they even popped the cover and took a look. When I got the vehicle back they didn't even charge me for the inspection. I decided to take it elsewhere because they were going to charge me $1700 for work that another shop was going to do for $1000. I drove the vehicle off the lot and immediately heard a terrible grinding noise that was not there previously. Worried that I might not make it to the other mechanics, I did not turn around. Big Mistake on my part... BUT when I got the other mechanics they said that the front differential had lots of noise coming out of it because there was possible metal inside. I dont know what happened while my vehicle was in their posession but it ended up costing me an extra $1000 to get the transfer case and differential fixed. Bottom Line: I wish I went right back to them, but with all that noise coming from who knows where I figured that the transfer case had gotten even worse. Might do good work, but Mark volunteered bogus information over the phone. I wanted to install a Detroit-Eaon Trutrac limited slip differential on my T100. Otherwise EVERYONE loves it. Mark told me that Trutrac would not work for my application (going up a steep dirt driveway) , because it would spin, and that it WAS NOT in fact a limited slip differential but instead a torque-sensing differential, same as a Gleason Torsen only good for street racing. When I pointed to the Utube videos and reviews and Eaton info that contradicted this, Mark hung up on me. Mark is equating the Torsen to the Trutrac , but thy are slightly different. Typical Trutrac review: I run a truetrac in my 04 4x4, it's an awesome unit, just grabs and goes, great street manners. The slipping wheel doesn't even make a full revolution before it gets in. I had the no-slip for a week, couldn't stand the harshness and noise. When I tried to power in and out of turns, it would bark the tires and jerk. I like thr truetrac much better. SD Gear installed it in 1 hr and it works perfectly. read more

Took my 2014 F150 here for a re-gear and limited slip installation after putting larger tires on it. The guys were super helpful, knew everything there is to know about diffs and do excellent work. I would absolutely take my truck there again. They even helped me out by doing a little exhaust welding on a bolt up kit I installed. All around great experience. 10 out of 10. read more
