I cannot praise Don and the guys at Pro-Built Transmission enough. The transmission in my 2015 Buick LaCrosse has been running rough for a couple years now, been able to limp along but got to the point where it had to be replaced. At 150K I got my money's worth, but I was faced with the choice of getting a new transmission (which costs more the the vehicle is currently worth) or junking the car and buying a new vehicle. Unfortunately, can't afford a new car payment right now, and I know my engine is still in great shape as I maintain all my vehicles carefully and on schedule and I can probably (hopefully) get another 100K out of it. Discussed options with Don, and we both felt a used transmission would be the most cost effective option given the vehicle age and history. He found a low mileage used transmission that was in good shape and installed it for me in a matter of a couple days. But what he did on top of that is why I will be a customer for life. I mentioned in passing that I've been having emissions codes pop up, and given that I was still running the original O2 sensors, I'd bought new ones that I was going to install on my own. I asked if he'd be willing to put them in for me when the transmission was out, simply because access would be so much easier at that time, rather than me at home laying on the garage floor with the car on jack stands, trying to wrap my arms around the tranny to get to the top of the unit where the spots on the manifold are. He was willing to do that for me, and in so doing, he actually noticed that my manifold had some cracks where the ports connect to the engine. Don, on his own, took my manifold off, brought it to his house after work, and fixed the cracks with his welder. All on his own time and dime. He reinstalled it for me, along with the O2 sensors, before reinstalling the transmission. Who the heck does things like this anymore, if ever? This is like the kind of care and service people got decades ago. And why this is exceptionally meaningful to me is, I'm soon to be laid off from work in October, and my wife is fighting through a recurrence of thyroid cancer. We've been struggling emotionally. I was so moved by this I literally teared up when I picked it up. It was such a damn sweet gesture. Getting wet eyed just typing this. I used Don Struebling at Pro Built Transmissions to replace the transmission in my 2012 Dodge Challenger R/T. The transmission failed not long after being reinstalled by a Dodge dealer following an engine oil seal repair, and unfortunately Dodge wouldn't cover the problem. That experience was enough to send me looking elsewhere -- and I'm glad I did. My R/T uses a Mercedes-built automatic transmission, and new or rebuilt units were hard to find. Don went above and beyond to locate a low-mileage (30,000-mile) replacement from a wrecked Challenger of the same model. His technical knowledge and resourcefulness were impressive, and his communication throughout the process was excellent. Five stars is not enough. My daughter is away at college and was having transmission problems. Trying to find a mechanic to look at it, while hundreds of miles away, had me worried. You know how sometimes you can just tell that someone is a nice person? I knew instantly that this would be a good place to have my daughter go. She drove her car over a few days later, calling me to say just how nice he was. He said it wasn't going to be a super pricey repair and would order the part. He let her know there was no immediate concern, which really put her at ease in the meantime. This is a situation where a mechanic could easily take advantage of the situation, a concerned parent far away and a young college student. I recently bought my '07 Suburban 2500 used with a supposedly rebuilt transmission. The transmission seemed to work okay, most of the time. But, it would kick off the check engine light and misbehave occasionally. Nobody else really wanted to deal with it. Don knew right away that it was probably in fact rebuilt but just done by amateurs that didn't realize how exacting you need to be with the reassembly of the 4L80E. (Once he got into it this was confirmed. They give it a good try, but no dice...) I bought this rig to tow my travel trailer long distances with my whole family. I don't want any problems. So, I bit the bullet and had Don rebuild the tranny. Well it works perfectly now. No issues, no lights, zero problems. I might add it has been over 6 months now since the work was done and still zero issues. Pro-Built Transmissions is not the cheapest. But they my well be the very best in transmission repair. My advice, if you're like me you don't want to drop 50-80k on a new rig. You want to keep your old rigs running like new. My advice, don't go cheap on your tranny rebuild. It'll probably cost you more in the long run! BTW- I had Don throw on a sweet optional tranny cooler at the same time for towing, he just charged for the parts since he was pulling the tranny anyway. I own a small shop, also in West Sacramento, and do not do most transmission repairs. I send my clients to Don at Pro Built Transmissions because I know he has the skills to fix these transmissions right. A lot of places will suggest replacement of the transmission if there is no movement or if it is slipping. Not all transmissions have to be replaced and Don can tell if it needs an overhaul, or just a solenoid or band adjustment. If you have any transmission issue, give Don a call. My husband and I are in the middle of relocating from California to Oregon driving our 2002 Chev Diesel Truck pulling a 26 foot trailer with all our belongings. Don took a bad situation and turned it into a pleasant experience. It isn't often that I'm happy to shell out a good chunk of change like the amount that is necessary in having your transmission replaced. But that's what needed to happen. AAMCO was trying to gauge with the $2,800 price they quoted. So I looked around and found Don through Yelp and he told it to me straight and provided a fair and reasonable price that was roughly half of what AAMCO quoted. I also came to quickly realize, the reason the price was cheaper, was because Don was more capable too. Nobody wants the unfortunate situation of having their transmission replaced or having to deal with the price tag that goes along with it. Kind of like having a toothache without any dental insurance. However, Don took care of me as if he had a doctorate in transmissions along with a good bedside manner. My only regret is not having brought the vehicle directly to Don in the first place. If I ever have a transmission problem again, and I pray I don't, I'll only let Don work on the vehicle. read more

My SUV was having tranny issues, Check engine light was on, Wouldnt shift into gears & I brought my SUV to another dealer which stated that I need a new transmission & the estimated price would be $3,700.00. So I thought I should seek for a 2nd opinion. It was meant to be that I drove right pass by this business & took down their number & called Don. He told me he would take a look at my car at no charge. Which he did and told me I need a new Tranny Band & a new Pressure Control Solenoid which was alot less than $3,700.
