Artistry Salon By Ampy - Balayage by our Artist Nina

Ampy started cutting my hair at least 35 years ago. She was a rising star with a dream of one day…read moreowning her salon. Whenever I saw a neighbor or a stranger for that matter, I would ask "Who does your color/cut? The answer was always Ampy. Did we all look alike? Heck no! Blondes, brunettes, edgy, preppy. She did it all. I just noticed that they looked like their best self. Fast forward to now. Ampy is a lifelong learner, also always honing her skills with extra training. She knows color inside and out. Although I'm quite a bit older now, she has seen me through many hair and life changes. No matter what I come out looking younger, refreshed with hair and color that no one believes isn't highlighted and glazed. Fast forward she opened her own salon, weathered Covid, and has an incredibly loyal following. Ampy has a great team, continually mentoring young stylists, and lifting young hairdressers to move up in the business. Hazel ( her partner, sister, and business manager) runs a tight ship. Yet she will find time to squeeze me in. I appreciate the team effort and the time it takes to train new staff. Occasionally after my consult with Ampy, she mixes the color, and one of the new students will apply my color under her direction. I was an intern once, so I applaud the mentoring. I have never been disappointed. Ampy always does my cut, but I see great results from everyone I see working there. This is not a factory, with quick in and out. Retired, I enjoy the whole salon experience. I never fail to run into a friend. But if you want quick in and out be sure to tell them. A family-run woman-owned business that treats everyone like family. Not to mention Ampy and Hazel are working mothers. It's awesome to see young women who dare to trust their talent start and maintain a successful business. I admire their sisterly bond. It's even more awesome that you'll come out feeling and looking great every time. Today is a bad hair day. I'll Post a picture on Friday after my appt.

Extremely negative experience with Nina. She was demeaning and dismissive. She attempted 2 or 3…read moretimes to end my haircut way prematurely after only a few snips. Even when she cut a little more at my insistence , I had to return because it was so bad, botched, uneven, and incomplete. When I walked into the salon for the "fix", the look on Ampy's face upon seeing my haircut said it all: a look of extreme disappointment and shock. The adjusted haircut was still not good. Nina is not good with curly hair! The only reasons that I am giving 2 stars rather than 1 are that I previously had good haircuts from Christen, who was always very nice, and Hazel has always been friendly, professional, and accommodating.

Lumie is an upscale salon in South Orange. It has an open, airy, clean design. Having now used…read moretheir services for about a year, I wholeheartedly recommend their services, especially for color and curly hair. Reflecting South Orange and Maplewood, their clientele is multi-racial as is their staff. Having spent years blow drying my hair straight, or sort of straight, I wanted to go back to my natural wavy/curly hair and correct my color. My natural color is medium brown but now is about half gray. For years, I'd colored it a dark auburn, but recently it had become unattractive, sort of harsh looking. Plus the salon I was using while friendly and reasonably priced had little experience in reviving curly hair. I have only had cut, color and highlights with Kosia, the owner. As a new client, we had a consultation. She examined my hair and carefully listened to what I wanted. We reviewed a book of hair color samples; I picked out a color. To set expectations, Kosia told me to take at least two coloring sessions before my hair would match the color I'd selected. She was right. Yes, my hair, when cut properly is curly. We both ended up experimenting with various products to find one that worked consistently well with my hair. Since waiting for color to set in is inherently boring, I spend a lot of time either reading or looking at the other hairdressers and their clients. I've rarely seen anything that doesn't look really good. I've also had my hair highlighted, and unlike prior experiences, the highlights blended very well with my hair so I only need to do this every other appointment. Prices are moderate for a high end salon in Essex County NJ. For example, my Rezo cut is between $100 to $200 at comparable NJ places and far higher in NYC. (Trust me, I checked). I pay $110 with the owner. To be honest, I was used to paying a lot less, but my hair did not look nearly as good. Every place else that provided similar services is roughly the same price or more. My hair looks great! The color is just what I wanted and I now have wavy curly hair. Really cannot recommend highly enough.

I was searching for a hair salon that specialized in natural hair care that wasn't overly…read moreexpensive. I heard little about this salon but decided to take a chance and I AM SO GLAD I DID. My hair has been through it all! Braids, perms, weaves, puff puffs...you name it. I came for a wash (deep condition), blow out and flat iron. I have very thick corse 4c type hair and my hair came out like silk! It was so smooth and neatly done. They know so much about hair and the service was absolutely outstanding!!! This is now my regular salon! Another thing: I have had such terrible experiences with heat styling tools. I've gotten burnt so many times, suffered from damage because my hair wasn't properly prepared for it. But at this salon I HAD NO PROBLEMS. I sat in the chair so calmly. Each pass through my hair was great. Overall: I left with bouncy, healthy, evenly trimmed, moisturized hair!! :)

This was the most unprofessional salon experience I've ever had…read more I booked a "Natural Style" with Dana Stokes, advertised as a collaborative service, but she insisted I had booked flat twists and ignored the actual description of what I was supposed to have done. I ended up choosing a flat twist style on my own with no consultation, yet was still charged the higher rate. When I calmly questioned the pricing, she became defensive, stopped mid-style, and began undoing my hair. She even swatted my hand away when I tried to remove the cape myself. Another stylist stepped in to de-escalate and at least put my hair in a bun, but I left with wasted time, no usable style, and no refund of my deposit. Additionally, she sneakily took a picture of me while the other stylist took over and posted me to her Instagram calling me a "scammer" along with other untrue statements. Truly disappointing behavior from a "professional".
