City Taxi of Beverly

(8 reviews)

I have used City Taxi in total about 8 or 10 times too many…read more Although they have either taken twice the time they've told me or had to be called back to be reminded of my request for a ride in the past I have continued to call them mostly because their number was programmed in my cell- after my most recent experience, however, I will not give this company another dime and - DELETE. Although the drivers are generally polite, the dispatchers and "management" at City Taxi are unbelievably rude. During my most recent experience,I requested a cab from my home to nearby Endicott College. Like every other time I have called for a cab here, it was difficult to be certain whether anyone was actually going to show up as the dispatcher just mumbled and immediately hung up as soon as I gave my address. That said, I called back after waiting outside my house 20 minutes for pickup. The dispatcher rudely barked that a driver had been to my address and left. When I explained that I had been waiting outside my door since calling, he replied "I guess I'll send him by again" and abruptly hung up. After another ten minutes and still no taxi in sight, I called again. This time I was hung up on the moment I stated the address where I'd been waiting - I guess he didn't want to talk to me. When my fiance called (Steam was shooting out of my ears at this point) and requested to speak with a supervisor, the dispatcher who had hung up on me identified himself as "the boss." He said that the driver had driven past the street that our street turns off of and beeped, He continued that if we hadn't been there it "wasn't his problem." Our home - mind you the requested location for pickup - is not on the street where the cab supposedly stopped or even on the corner of that street. The dispatcher was immediately rude, repeatedly swore and hung up again. It is important to note that both my fiance and I were polite and reasonable during this entire interaction and were met with disgustingly unprofessional behavior. Having moved to Beverly from Boston, we understand that taxi transportation isn't as much of a convention outside of the city. As new homeowners who use the commuter rail for work, we often call a cab to get home from the grocery store or to the zip car at Endicott College. I am completely appalled at the way we were treated. And for the sake of the nice drivers I have encountered, I hope that the "gentleman" who identified himself as "the boss" does not in fact hold such a position. Despite being headquartered extremely close to my house, I will never ever ever - did I say ever? - step foot in a City Taxi cab again. I recommend this cab company to the crack whores and drunken vagrants I've seen them courting near Beverly Depot or anyone who wants to be treated like one.

Another article in the Beverly Citizen…read more Three City Taxi cabs that police say are unsafe were ordered to be taken off the road in the past week. The company's cab 6 was seen at Rantoul Street and Broadway on Thursday, July 23 with an inspection sticker that expired in April. Police said a week earlier they issued a ticket for the inspection violation and said on July 23 the company was told it needed to be inspected the next day. On Friday, March 24, police stopped City Taxi cab 6 again at about 8 p.m. at Elliott and Beckford streets. The company was issued another ticket for not having it inspected and it was taken out of service. Police said it had an exhaust leak and they removed the Beverly taxi sticker. The next day, police said, the same cab was stopped again, this time at Park Street and Broadway where cab 6 had a rotted rear tire, no horn and no ignition switch and had not been inspected. It was ordered to be taken off the road, City Taxi was given a ticket the license plates were removed and was towed. Then, on Tuesday, July 28 at about 10 p.m. police said they saw the same car, taxi 6, carrying a passenger on Beckford Street. Police said the cab had been reregistered, this time with a livery license plate. The car allegedly still had the same rotten rear driver's side tire and didn't have a horn or ignition switch. It also didn't have a taxi meter or the proper lights, police said. The cab was unsafe, police said, and again it was towed. A similar situation occurred with City Taxi's cab 7, police said. It began on Thursday, July 23 when police said cab 7 was at Rantoul Street and Broadway with a rejected inspection sticker from March. Police said the cab had one head light out and metal showing on the front tires. The company's manager was told the taxi shouldn't be put back on the road until it was inspected by traffic Sgt. Joe Shairs. A third cab that police said records show City Taxi put on the road on July 3 had not been inspected when it was seen on Wednesday, July 22 at about 8 p.m. at the Park Street taxi stand near Beverly Depot. Police told the driver the cab hadn't been inspected and it couldn't take fares and he returned it to the office. Two days later the same cab was given a ticket on Hale Street for not having an inspection sticker. Police said it had bald tires. Officer John McCarthy, a police spokesman, said police conduct regular taxicab inspections of the two licensed taxi companies in the city. "In addition to scheduled cab inspections, the traffic department routinely and randomly inspects all taxi cab to make sure they are operating safely," he said. City Taxi manager John Balkus couldn't be reached for comment.
