We have been taking our dogs to PPPP for approx 20 years. Our first dog was a mixed lab (Sebastian) who would always pull us in through the gates. Tail a waggin' He was so loved and so cared for. He was quite elderly when I decided he could not go anymore. As I was afraid he would pass away and it would be too traumatic for the women that cared for him and loved him. When he did pass away, I wrote to let them know he's gone and how much he had loved them all. It was a peaceful and painless passing which I was happy to tell them. We had the most beautiful card signed by many of the women, volunteers and employees. I was so touched and still read that card and shed a tear to this day. We weren't going to get any more dogs as it's so painful to lose them. Then I met my "Hoppy and Petey" at a Chew Dog Rescue adoption program. I instantly was smitten and 4 years later we are one happy, joyful family. They make me laugh countless times a day. And are very loving as only animals can be. I would never take my dogs to any other kennel than PPPP. I have complete trust and respect for these women. My dogs are happy, loved, exercised and well cared for. There is none better. Plus, I believe it's a win win on both sides. Book ahead and remember it is a prison. One goes through security checks, a few locked gates. But it's soooo worth any inconvenience. After a few visits you get used to it and allow yourself some extre time. The prison now has some great one on one training for your dogs (extra). My friend took her lab there when on vacation and had an inmate work with some obedience training with her dog. She said it was wonderful! And he's such a good boy now. Well worth it she says. I highly recommend this kennel. It's wonderful! Loving, caring, clean and a safe place to be for your animals. The inmates that answer the phones are friendly and very professional. We have been taking our 3 dogs here for about 6 years. It's not your typical dog kennel There are specific dog pick up and drop off times You have to go to security just like at airport The dogs seems to love it. They give you a report card at pick up. I used to feel rushed talking to the girls with prison officers watching but now that my oldest is almost 14 and lots of medications and supplements. I just take my time We took the tour they have once a month very interesting and the girls even recognized us and ask about our trio When our middle dog died unexpectedly they handmade a card and over a dozen girls signed it Very touching We love this place read more

Ripley-Doodle has been to PPP several time over several years. In Ripley-doodle's unbiased opinion this PPP is the BEST place to vacation. Grooming on this BIG labradoodle has been stylish & very sassy. When I pick her up she's happy smells like a rose. Once you get the hang of getting in and out of the prison and paperwork, it's easy and the price is very reasonable. This program is a win-win for dogs and inmates. Try it. This is a great value and the cheapest dog boarding we have found in the area. Our dog returned from his weekend stay happy and clean (thanks to his bath at the end of his visit). The staff that we interacted with were friendly and good with dogs. Just remember that because you are entering a prison it takes a little longer for drop off/pick up and you have to go through a metal detector. I got my Service Dog Sunny from the dog training program at the prison. Sunny had to take his last ride to the Vet. a year ago last February, ( 2015). The dogs are hand picked from shelters and given another chance at life. They are trained by an inmate meaning the inmate has the dog 24/7, I think, as the dog and inmate are working in the training center on skills the dog will need once placed. The dog is with the inmate during the inmates meals and the rest of the things the inmate is required to do. The cells the inmates are in are "dry cells, meaning no water such as sink and toilet". The cell has 2 inmates and 2 dogs. The inmates are responsible for meeting the dogs potty needs as well as exercise and feeding and whatever else arises. They are supervised by staff. When the inmate has to leave the cell to use the toilet, she takes the dog with her. The inmate gets a chance to bond, love and let go. This is a painful process for anyone but I imagine mostly for an inmate. When the dog reaches a certain place in their training, they leave the 24/7 time with the inmate and get placed with a foster family outside the prison so they can accomplish things in their training only being outside the prison can afford them such as: riding in a car, bus, at least one flight on a plane, going in stores, grocery shopping, etc., etc. The list is endless. The dog will know about 5 pages of verbal commands before being placed. Training of some kind continues between the new handler and dog once placed. Before the dog is placed with its new handler/owner, that person comes into the prisons training center for several hours for a period of a 3 - 4 weeks, sleeping off prison grounds at night. The person spends time both listening and asking questions in a small class setting and working on training the dog they will be getting with the inmate who trained the dog in the beginning. Walking through the prison to the training center can all feel a bit overwhelming at first. Actually, every time. However, you are escorted by a staff member and there are several check points. The inmates in the training center have had to interview with a staff member for a position in the training center and have to have a low to none violent infractions within a certain amount of time and I believe medium or lower, (I cannot remember here I am sorry),. I don't want to say more here because I don't want to risk not giving credit where credit is due. I know working with the dogs is like a job for the inmates and they cannot have any violence towards animals in their records. Some of the inmates in the training center work grooming dogs. They learn this skill and use it on dogs in the program as well as dogs who have graduated. Dogs who have graduated can come in 1x per month for a free all around grooming. Also, people from the community can make appointments to bring their dog(s) in for grooming. I am not sure what the fee is because I have never been in that situation. The inmates learn valuable skills that they can take with them when discharged from the prison. They will hopefully be able to find work using these skills. Just a couple things I forgot. The dogs have a wonderful graduation day where there is a super ceremony and their leash is handed over from the inmate who trained them to the new handler/owner. There is a bag of treats for each dog with their picture on the bag. The ceremony is very emotional for all involved. A great time. Contact remains between the staff and the handler/owner. For the 1st six months, each month the handler sends in a report of how things are going with what is now called "the team". All good and any problems. Questions, how do I...?, etc. At the end of 6 months, the team is given a Public Access Test. This test shows how well things are going, what needs improvement, (and there is a time limit to have the improvement(s) made or the dog could be taken), and the test has certain places in it that are an automatic fail, (such as getting out of the car unsafely rather safely and on commands). After this first test, the team is then given the same test yearly to show they are still a working team and not just calling themselves a team so they can be anywhere in public together. There are pages and pages to the contract you enter when you are blessed with one of Purdys dogs. This is as should be. A lot of work goes into each dog. There are a lot of people waiting for a dog. The wait list is long and as I said there is a lot of work that goes into each dog. That is way before the new handler/owner is contacted. If a dog washes out of the program it is NOT put to sleep. It is "paroled out as a pet". Most of these dogs make well trained pets with limited flaws such as not being able to ride on public transportation. I am referring to a dog I had. After the first 6 months it was clear by my monthly reports this dog needed to be paroled out as a pet. He was and has had a wonderful life playing. read more

My dogs LOVE these ladies! The first time my husband and I too our first dog Lucy there she had undergone TPLO surgery 2 1/2 months earlier and they were more than amazing with her. We were very nervous as we were traveling out of country but when we went to pick her up all of our worries were completely disbanded. We try to use them every time we can't bring our pups with us but they fill up so quickly! We recently used them as we went out of country again and this time we had a second dog who we rescued and is definitely part of Team Nervous when he is away from us. When we got them back they were excited but looked like they had, had fun! They give you a "report card" and a short description of how their stay went and everything that went on. I will never utilize any other boarding service as long as I can get our pups into this program. I have not yet utilized their training program, however, I feel comfortable recommending it from other individuals experiences. read more

Really pleased with the quality of the grooming my dog received. I would absolutely recommend this service. I've been several times and the service is consistently good and you can't beat the prices. Just remember to call and schedule in advance. Also, a typical drop-off requires entry into the facility/passing through the metal detector. They also require current shot records prior to drop off including bordatella (spelling?) shots. One final note, children are not allowed into the facility. They can still take your dog but you'll need to mention this as you set your appointment so arrangements can be made for a lobby pick-up that is typically not permitted. read more

Have taken my dog Pete here many times to be groomed and also boarded. He comes back super happy every time. The groomers always listen to my requests and are very friendly. You can tell they genuinely love working with dogs. The drop off process can take awhile sometimes, but just plan ahead and bring a magazine to look at (not your phone since you have to put it in a locker or leave in your car.) read more

If I could give a 10 star review I would! Took our big, hairy, matted, full of tree sap, burrs and debris from the woods, and smelling (as our young neighbors say)- like "clam chowder" Golden doodle in to be groomed just yesterday. We expected a good grooming, what we got was truely perfection! (At a previous groomers before we rescued him, they had "shaved him down" because of matts and the bald look was pretty awful and his skin was so irritated because of the shaving.) The gals at Purdy brushed out every matt, (we heard it took two of them brushing!) and were able to give him the best haircut ever! He has the scruffy non- poodle look we were hoping for and looks adorable. Everyone there is clearly trained and experienced in using positive, punishment free methods. We've been taking our dogs here for grooming for a couple of years now. In general, they do a good job but it's not very consistent. Sometimes we get exactly what we asked for and other times (they will ask if you want the same as last time), it will be done differently even when you specify what you want. Once they bring the dogs out, you can't exactly ask them to take them back to correct an error so you just need to hope they get it right next time. read more

my standard poodle was groomed here but his private areas weren't trimmed at all and his feet were supposed to have the hair trimmed off but there was still a lot of hair between the toes. They did a great job cleaning and trimming the hair out of his ears. His top knot was cut so poorly it had an obvious slant like his head was tilted a lot to one side. Even though it was the cheapest bath and trim ever it wasn't worth it because I had to take him to another groomer to fix what they did. read more
