International House Ann Arbor - Met this cute lil guy at community meal. The calmest kid ever

Coming to the States for the first time, choosing a friendly community with diverse set of folks…read moreand having a fully-equipped home were on the top of my priority list. I learned about ECIR from a friend and I instantly fell in love with the place. It not only checked these parameters but was super convenient in terms of location (important criteria during brutal Michigan winters). It is walking distance from the business school, the school of education and the school of public policy. Further, it is barely couple of blocks away from the frat house, pubs/ bars and restaurants where most parties happen (yet not at all noisy!) I live in a 2 bedroom apartment which is clean, spacious and well-furnished with latest equipments in the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and living room. Besides, there is always Stoney (the go to guy) to help you with anything you may need. In terms of the community, ECIR is awesome! I have made some great life long friends (outside my business school) from around the world over numerous meals, activities and games like Mafia. People here are non fussy, down to earth and very friendly. Festivals such as Chinese New Year, Graduation Prom, International Fair and Diwali are celebrated here. Also, I love the community meals that happen every week where you get to taste amazing international cuisines made by fellow residents (Yes, free food!). Jessica & team do a wonderful job of taking care of not only your daily needs but also organizing various fun events. (We are all Jessie Lovers here!). Finally, this year Munger was clearly the hype but I decided to not follow the blind trend as ECIR is way more than just a community living. It takes a lot for any large building to be anything like ECIR, given the kind of people it attracts, the cute little personal community it is and various diverse events and activities it hosts for its residents and international students while also being an awesome housing. I love ECIR, it is indeed the best thing that happened to me after Ross here. I would highly recommend to people considering living around Tappan, State, Packard, Hill, Church, Brown or Main St.

The Standard at Ann Arbor

The Standard at Ann Arbor

Living at The Standard as a subletter was a huge disappointment. From the start, the move-in…read moreprocess was a nightmare--there were little to no bins or carts available to help with moving, which made things extremely stressful. Once inside, I quickly realized that most of the amenities are either closed, dirty, or barely functioning, despite what management advertises. The elevators constantly break down, and the building often schedules unnecessary maintenance checks where staff just let themselves into your apartment with zero warning. On top of that, many of the maintenance workers are rude and unhelpful, which just adds to the frustration. The leasing office is almost never open, and trying to get help from anyone is next to impossible. If you lose your phone or it dies, good luck getting home--you need an electronic key to scan into every part of the building. This becomes a serious safety and accessibility issue. The location is also concerning, with a high presence of aggressive and unstable homeless individuals right outside the building. There's zero real security presence, and management does nothing to protect residents. Because of this, you can't safely order Doordash or receive packages--they often get stolen or tampered with. And let's talk about cost: you'll get charged for just existing in this place. It's extremely overpriced for what you get, and they'll find any reason to tack on more fees. Overall: Do not live here if you value your peace, safety, money, or time. The Standard is all hype with none of the follow-through. Subletting here was one of the worst housing decisions I've made.

I will try to keep this short and simple. Do not live here. It is a complete ripoff and they even…read morecharged me an entire month while they were under construction. Meaning this place misled me into spending an extra $1800 for nothing. All of the other 1 star reviews are completely accurate and almost all of the 5 star reviews are totally inaccurate. The reality of living here is that this is a blatant cash grab with no real care for the tenants and their wellbeing. For example, there was a criminal incident in which I was randomly placed with a psychotic roommate who physically broke in my room at 3am hoping I was inside sleeping (all of which was admitted by the criminal) and The Standard's response was to basically ignore this issue until it went away just like everything else that goes on in the building such as the build up of trash that reaches the hallways. It's been months and my door still has not been fixed and the blood in his bathroom has not been cleaned. In fact, I had to clean the debris cause from this break in and there are still large pieces of the broken door in my closet. To make things even worse I was charged $512 in utilities BECAUSE he was evicted and I know this because I had an email saying there were "adjustments made due to this criminal being moved out" in order to reduce this cost I should turn the fan on instead of the AC and lower my thermostat by 1 degree in FEBRUARY. Keep in mind his room is been not only empty but avoided for months. So I had to pay for being a victim of a felony. When I tried to end my contract early I was told that I would receive a message to go into further detail and guess what, I was ignored once again. This place cares about one thing only, milking you for as much money as they can, even when it comes to your safety.

Munger Graduate Residences - View of The Big House from the rooftop!

Munger Graduate Residences

So, I can only speak as a UM grad student who visited one of my classmates who lives at Munger. But…read morecompared to my experiences of on-campus housing at my undergrad institution, I was so amazed by what I witnessed at Munger. I truly wish I would have actually considered living at Munger. Lobby level offers various room for studying and entertainment such as karaoke, watching movies, foosball, ping pong, etc. The floors in between that and the rooftop are the units. The only downside is that you have, like, seven roommates? But each has their own room, a desk, shelving, a closet that's tiny for my clothes but decent for anyone else's wardrobe, a queen-sized bed (!!), and private bathroom. All units come with a washer and dryer, two stoves, two TVs, all utilities included, and I'm sure I'm missing other in-unit amenities, too. My favorite part is the rooftop. There is a convenience store. More study rooms but with a gorgeous view of the whole campus and Ann Arbor. A small gym. But most importantly, a rooftop track! Imagine running there overlooking the gorgeous view, which I did immediately after I visited my classmate. There is even seating outside for those that want to lounge and get a tan while you see the runners jog around the track. This is hands down my favorite place to run now and although I'm not a resident, it's very easy to get to the rooftop without needing proper Mcard access before late evening hours. I live outside of campus and despite how impressed I am with Munger, I do see some cons. Despite having your own rooms, I'd still feel weird living with seven other people. There is no close parking lot so if you have a car, you would still need to buy a parking pass. Again, I can't speak to how it's like living here. But after visiting my classmate, I'm regretting not signing up.
