Spencer, Iowa During fair season we were looking for a nice place to eat. This was recommended so we went. Very busy place at 8 pm on a Saturday night. Many large parties but we were only two, so we waited only 10 minutes. Dining room has many tables with nice low back chairs. They are pleather with a soft cushion. A few tables line the walls with booths/chairs combo. The downside are the black paper napkins. I wish they were cloth. The menu is broad from salads to hamburgers and of course seafood and steak. Each entree comes with a side salad and choice of side. You can select from french fries, mashed potatoes, baked potato, mac & cheese, and more. The salad is nothing more than spinach mixed with iceberg two cherry tomatoes, and one slice of cucumber. They come in a chilled aluminum bowl. Hate eating out of aluminum. They should consider changing that to chilled plates such as those at the salad bar. The dinner rolls come in a basket with a napkin, prepackaged butter, and a side of what look to be cinnamon butter. I ordered the fisherman's platter which had fried shrimp, fried clam strips, and fried cod. I chose to have mac & cheese as my side. The cod was excellent. Thick, moist, and cooked to perfection. The shrimp were butterflied. Both the shrimp and the clam strips were inconsistently cooked. Some were done and others were soggy batter. The macaroni and cheese had a light creamy white sauce. It tasted fine, but didn't have any exceptional flavor. My husband ordered the prime rib. It sits on a bed of au jus. He really liked that idea instead of having to dip it. He said the meat tasted very good. He ordered a baked potato with his meal. I ordered a raspberry shanty beer with my meal. It was a draft beer. Very refreshing, very delicious! Our waitress was kind. Did not know much about the menu and had to keep asking questions from the kitchen. That is not a problem for me, and better to check than be wrong. The entire wait staff seems to hurry, and I often saw them running. I appreciate the willing to get things done and their quickness, However, I am certain they can be much more efficient without running toward the kitchen. Be aware if you pay by credit card there is a fee to do so. Try and bring cash so you don't incur that extra cost. I would for certain come back to this restaurant. I give this restaurant 4.5 stars. read more

The restaurant is very pretty and the bar was amazing which really boosts the rating. I also thought our server was awesome. The martini that I ordered was very good. However, the prime rib, especially for the price, was just okay. There was also a walleye served to someone in our party that was extremely dry. I'm not exactly sure what I would get next because I ordered literally what the restaurant was named after, but maybe I just got an under seasoned and slightly overcooked piece. I would come back, but be weary about what you order. read more

Wow For the price the food the service was the worst. The food was cold and the service was slow. The server was very nice but overwhelmed. The bartender was unhelpful and MEAN. We were there for 2.5 hours. WHY ?? So much for going to a really nice restaurant. read more

worst experience of my entire life. in from out of town on business, meet the bald manager and the two blondes who work there, super sweet. get food poisoning. throwup in my meeting the next morning, throw up in the road and my hotel! im so mad! get pulled by policd on my way to cedar rapids ...tell the officer i'm food poisoned...he said where from...told him the prime rib to which he reply's "i've gotten sick from that place before too!" gives mdd we s warning, i puke again and resume my travel. horrible place. horrible food quality. should be shut down! read more

We live in the area and have eaten here many times. Something has changed and not for the better. Went last night salad bar was amazing as always. But my dinner was a huge fail. I ordered the steak bites and a baked potato. The meat was so tough I couldn't chew it, It was way over cooked . The potato was so cold butter wouldn't melt on it. Husbands food wasn't much better but he ate more than I could. It's the last time I waste money there. read more

I live in Florida yet I can not come to Spencer with out stopping for prime rib and it never fails to deliver. The prime rib was perfectly cooked and seasoned my waitress was as amazing as as the food The only negetive and not even sure it was If my waitress gave her name I missed it But all in all everything was five for five on stars read more

Arriving at the restaurant, I thought it was very crowded, but inside were only a few people. The bar attached to the building was the focal point with a wings deal. The Restaurant is nice looking on the inside, a tad on the dark side. I sat at the bar, which is set with regular sit down chairs , the bar seats 4 and is situated in the middle of the restaurant, a salad bar is on the other side of the bar. My food was very good having a chicken sandwich with Bacon, the jalapeño cream corn was excellent. My complaint is that the bar is jammed full of drink items and makes the bar look very unkept even though it is clean. Service was excellent during my visit, I would recommend this restaurant. read more

We had not eaten there in years. Usually we eat further North in the Lakes region. We were in Spencer and decided we would give it a try. The decor was kind of a throw back to the old fine dining supper club atmosphere. Comfortable, nice soft background music and easy to carry on a conversation with our table companions. Jamie our server made us feel like we were the most important people in the room. Food was cooked properly, served at temp, well seasoned, very happy. It was such a pleasant experience we will be back. The price was very reasonable too. read more

One of the nicest restaurants in Spencer, though not that it has a lot of competition. Definitely has the best salad bar in town. It's a pretty good place to get crab legs if you're into such things, I mention this because I don't think you can order them anywhere else in town. Also, while not on their menu, they have great sweet potato fries! read more

I was visiting town for just one night I was told to try this restaurant and it was a pleasant experience the interior looks like they remodeled but still the furniture was very dated looking like furniture from the 1970s the salad was a typical salad that you could get in a bag from any grocery store (do note that they have a fabulous salad bar but I got a house salad) the bread was fresh the honey butter given with the bread was very very good! The prime rib was very nicely done but could have had a bit more flavor the baked potato was done just right and tasted very good. The service was awesome but do understand that I showed up at 5 PM when they open their doors and was the only customer they had at that time. I gave this restaurant a four star review simply because the service was very good and they smiled a lot and the food was solid and I would eat here again. read more

I ate here last night as I was here on business. The service was very good, the facility was clean and pleasant. I had (The Animal) which is a 22 oz piece of Prime Rib. The beef was acceptable. I also had the salad bar with the meal. It's not the best Prime Rib I've ever had by far but sure not the worst. I think it's a little pricey for the area. I'm thankful though because we're out in the middle of a cornfield, we take what we can get. read more

This is my second time in Spencer, and my second time at this restaurant. Sure, I've been to better steakhouses, but this one is really good - especially when compared to the other options in town (or lack of). The prime rib was great, the salad bar is decent, and the service was fantastic. The prices are pretty good too. I'll certainly come back the next time I'm in town. read more

This is one of the top, if not THEE top restaurant in spencer. The prime rib was good. Mashed potatoes were creamy with some chunks--the way mom makes it. However, not to discredit the entree, the loaf of bread they bring out with homemade cinnamon butter is to die for. I ate the entire loaf even though I left a few bites of mashed potatoes. Also, the ranch dressing is homemade and should be bottled and sold because it is perfectly creamy and thick and wonderful. 4/5 because the prime rib could use some more seasoning and I thought it should be more flavorful considering it's the namesake of the business. This place is a STEAL for what you get. They don't have Malbec but it's a small town in Iowa so I won't judge too harshly. The decor is a hoot as it's circa 1986! The service was great and the food was MF-ing fantastic! Do the salad bar as it's all mayonnaise based with plain old iceberg lettuce complete with vanilla pudding, like an old supper club. My pal had the prime rib which is what their known for *(see the name) and I had the scallops with the bacon wrapped filet. Good size filet cooked exactly like I requested and it was moderately thick bacon which held up well. Anywhere in Minneapolis we would have shelled out three times what our bill totaled. I was at prime tib this evening for date night with my husband. We have never been there. Service was outstanding .. very pleasant. We ordered lobster with steak. Prime rib. Salad bar. And appetizer. Told waitress we wanted to enjoy.our meal. So dont rush anything.. well wrong statement . Took 45 mins. In between. Steak was well. Ordered mr.. prime w as awesome. LOBSTER WAS RUBBER..so needless to say. It cost us 168.00 . Gave her 200.00 walked away with to go box for dog.. Mushroom caps and salad bar if we ever return. read more

For a traveling salesman looking for a steak, look no further. I walked in and was seated right away, Tuesday night, and the server was very attentive. He had my drink order, and I was there for steak, and my food order at the first introduction. I had the ribeye, medium, and it was cooked to perfection, and a gin and tonic. The food was great! Steak cooked excellent with good seasoning and a classic tin foil wrapped baked potato. They have a bar attached to the side of the restaurant, same food but with a sports bar atmosphere. If you wanted to catch a game and have a good piece of meat this would also be the place I recommend. Basically, The Prime Rib has my vote for best eatery in Spencer, IA. read more

Now open for lunch. We dined here for lunch yesterday with the family. We were a group of seven. Two disliked their food completely. The rest seemed to enjoy their meals as did I. Much better experience this time for most of us. Turkey sandwich one had was enjoyed, but wondered about their definition of thick bacon was, as what they received was thin. Very good place to eat. Big salad bar, appetizers were very good and our prime rib dinners were to big to finish, had to bring some home. They were very busy with prom weekend and lots of prom goers eating there, we got right in and service was very good. Our server thought our food was taking longer than it should so she gave us 2 crown and cokes on the house, not often that happens. Yes, the décor needs updating. That said, the food is delicious. The salad bar looks small, but is loaded with fantastic choices of salad items and relishes. I ordered their biggest prime rib, a 22oz slab of meat. It was perfectly prepared. Had the garlic mashed potatoes with it. Great compliment. Add a glass of zinfandel wine and the whole experience was worth the price on a Saturday night. read more

Was disappointed with a restaurant that normally comes through. I brought my wife and family here for what I thought would be a nice meal (as I have been here many times with clients and always had a good experience). Thursday night not very busy and I had a big disappointment in our meal experience. Server did not want to be their and it showed, food did not come out for over 40 minutes and all we were told was we are short a cook, food was cold and not one person in management said a word to me or asked if we had a good dining experience.
