Recently, I received a call from my Mother that Daddy was in hospital. I flew in immediately, last minute. Mom was at the hospital, so could not leave to come and get me, so I tried to get an Enterprise, but the Enterprise folks were booked up at the airport, so I called for an Uber ride from the airport. That was a disaster, but that's another story. At any rate, after joining my Mother in the hospital, we returned to their home in Palm Valley. With more family arriving, it was obvious we needed extra transport. I contacted the Enterprise location at 7800 W Expressway 83. I spoke with the Assistant Manager there, Laura Cavada. Obviously, I was very distraught, as my father was in bad shape. She was so very kind to me, and knowing that I had other family members arriving that needed to be fetched, she upgraded me to the next level of vehicle, that allowed me to fetch more family members from the airport. I went into their offices, and met her in person, as well as her assistant Kayla Ramon. Both were so kind to me, even emotionally, that I felt like I had to mention them for their empathy to me in a tough situation. That can be rare these days, as we live in a computerized World. Rating is 5 out of 5, or better if possible. I definitely would use them again, should the need arise. Great job, gals! Sandie Dickens

The car we received was also in fairly good shape (especially given the evidence in the car of what their past drivers must've been doing while driving, i.e. spilling coffee on the car ceiling while driving). I have two main issues that are not the fault of the staff at this specific location, but, more so, with AVIS as a company. I wish I would've been told more explicitly in advance about the $250 holding fee required during the rental that HAD TO BE MADE ON THE SAME CREDIT CARD used to book the rental originally. While we were fine, it is possible that this is a potential barrier for customers. The hours also could be better - there are few car rental places in the RGV/McAllen area that are open past 9/10 PM which seems like a missed opportunity. We arrived after midnight when all the rental car businesses were closed. As a result, I had to come back the next day to pick up our rental car during AVIS' business hours.

I had booked a rental car through my airline app using miles. When I arrived everything was…read morewaiting for me as expected. The attendants at the desk were friendly and efficient. I presented the documentation they required and I was done in just a few minutes. The car I was assigned was a new Toyota Prius Hybrid that gets over 51 gallons a mile. Considering the price of gasoline these days that was a plus. I did not pay for the navigation software, but the car allows you to connect your smartphone and use either Google Maps or Waze which appears on the screen of the car. My only complaint is that the screen was too bright at night and a distraction while using the phone app navigation and I could not figure out how to dim it. There probably is a way; I just couldn't find it. Apart from that very minor detail everything was superb. Though I have to say, driving across the State of Texas and back in a hybrid with California plates, I'm pretty sure I got the "stink eye" from a few locals... (ha ha) I used the car for 5 days and around 1300 miles, and enjoyed the way it worked. It was my first time to drive a hybrid. Returning the car was also easy and smooth. Based on my experience, I recommend Avis.

DO NOT RENT WITH THEM: They consistently overcharge & engage in fraud! I had a pay later…read morereservation which I cancelled when I made a pay-now reservation about 2 weeks before my arrival. They double charged me when I picked up the car, charging me for the full pay-later reservation. When I provided the credit card statement showing the pay-now charge, the pay-now reservation confirmation, and the pay-later reservation cancellation, they claimed they had no record of the reservation (despite me providing it) and charged me for the difference, saying the difference was just "taxes and fees." Even with "no record" of the pay later reservation, they knew exactly what the difference was. They also overcharged me on a rental the week prior and tried to on the week after, but I caught it before it was too late. Do not rent with Hertz, Thrifty, or Dollar at MFE (but probably everywhere). They clearly engage in fraud and just hope they're not caught by the customer.

OK, it wasn't me renting the car, but my son. But I accompanied him when he rented it and when he returned it. Right now there is construction traffic on the portion of Hwy. 83 directly in front of the car rental agency. So it can be tricky getting in and out at high traffic hours for the time being. Hopefully that will be finished soon! Another plus from Budget is that they are still open till 9 PM whereas the rental places at the airport are closing up at 6. It also helps that their prices are competitive. For a last minute car rental, they had the best prices in town. The car was clean, virtually new, and everything it was supposed to be.
