DO NOT RENT WITH THEM: They consistently overcharge & engage in fraud! I had a pay later reservation which I cancelled when I made a pay-now reservation about 2 weeks before my arrival. They double charged me when I picked up the car, charging me for the full pay-later reservation. When I provided the credit card statement showing the pay-now charge, the pay-now reservation confirmation, and the pay-later reservation cancellation, they claimed they had no record of the reservation (despite me providing it) and charged me for the difference, saying the difference was just "taxes and fees." Even with "no record" of the pay later reservation, they knew exactly what the difference was. They also overcharged me on a rental the week prior and tried to on the week after, but I caught it before it was too late. Do not rent with Hertz, Thrifty, or Dollar at MFE (but probably everywhere). They clearly engage in fraud and just hope they're not caught by the customer. read more

I had an overall very good experience with Dollar Rent A Car. When I arrived at the counter the clerk was busy on the phone. I waited several minutes while he finished with the client on the phone. It would've been nice had he made eye contact and signaled that he will be with me shortly. I was just standing there until he finished. However once he did finish and give me his attention he was very nice and apologized for taking so long on the phone. I had reserved a car through my United account. Part of the idea was to earn miles with my frequent flyer program. More on that in a minute. When I made the reservation I noticed that the full-size car was less expensive than the midsize. So I requested the full-size car. However when I arrived they did not have that size available. I was given a choice to either downgrade to the compact or I could upgrade to the small SUV at no extra charge. Since small cars leave me with little head room I chose the small SUV which was a Nissan Rogue. I was quoted the same price as what I saw when I made the reservation, but I noticed that my credit card was authorized for about $30 more for the week. I assumed that it was some kind of a surcharge that would be credited when I returned the car. I enjoy driving the Nissan Rogue throughout the week. It did great and I enjoyed the extra headroom. When I returned the car the gentlemen who attended me questioned the extra charge and looked into it. It turns out dollar Rent-A-Car charges you for crediting frequent flyer miles to your account. Since I did not need the frequent flyer miles I told him to take it off. So at the end of the day I was charged but I anticipated when I made the reservation. I filled up with gasoline just prior to returning the car and save my receipt but was not required to show it. When returning rental cars at this airport you need to park the car in an empty spot in the appropriate lane, then complete the transaction inside the airport at the rental desk (across the hall from the luggage carousels). While they could use some lessons in positive communication with customers, they did a good job once they got to me and got me in a nice vehicle. read more

Worst Rent-A-Car company I've ever dealt with. If I had poorly trained and asinine employees like this company I would not have a business. I reserved a car online weeks in advance. I presented my credit card and drivers license and a digital copy of my drivers license renewal, which I had done a few days ago but had not yet received the drivers license hardcopy. The lady at the counter would not accept my digital copy of my renewal even though she had a copy of my drivers license in hand as well . I was stuck away from home no way to drive to our destination in South Padre Island . I had my son with me who is only 18 and could not drive the car. I was turned away and worst of all the woman showed no sense of compassion and was a total b****. I asked to talk to the manager who was apparently hiding in the office and would not come out. After waiting about 10 minutes and becoming very frustrated , we walked two counters over to Hertz, showed them my credentials and they had no problem renting a car, and even matched my online price. I travel a lot and would never rent from Dollar again, EVER! read more

The worst car rental place I have been to. I went to a general car rental website that compares the prices from all car rental locations in the area instead of going straight to avis.com like I'd normally do. They did have the best rate out of everyone. The saying "you get what you pay for" cant be more correct in this situation. I showed up about an hour after my said reservation time. Waited in line behind another customer for about 10mins then I was told by their representative that my car has been given to someone else since I was late, and they would only hold the car for up to 30mins after the actual reservation time, not only that, there was about 30-40mins for them to get another car ready for me. What kind of BS is that? Never had I had to experience waiting that long for a car rental with a prior reservation! Especially being at an airport, shouldn't they know better to prepare for more cars just in case???? The girl who works at the front desk didnt help much with the situation either. She was chewing gum and talking to all the customers the whole time. She said she would call me and let me know once the car is ready, just find a seat somewhere nearby. I picked a seat right in front of their booth, about 25ft away. She didn't bother to come and get me to let me know the car was ready. I ended up wasted another 15mins until I decided to go up and ask her. Never again would I come here or use any of Dollar Rent a Car period. Spend a little more money to save yourself some frustration and especially time if you're in a hurry to go somewhere or see your loved ones like I did. read more

DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM THIS COMPANY! I rented a car from Dollar at the airport in McAllen for a trip to South Padre Island. On the way back, I used a toll road. There were no toll booths at the entrance or exit. I had no idea what tolls, if any, were due or how to pay them. Two weeks later I receive an invoice from Dollar billing me for $46.67. It seems that within a nine minute period, the State of Texas electronically monitored my rental car three times, assessing tolls of 50 cents, 50 cents, and 67 cents and sent the bill to Dollar. Dollar paid the combined tolls of $1.67 and added three $15 administrative fees for a grand total of $46.67. After wasting two hours making a dozen phone calls, I was able to negotiate the administrative fee down to $7.50. I was told that this was one-time relief, and that I would not be granted similar relief in the future. I assured the nice lady that there was no chance I would ever be making a similar request of Dollar. P.S., did I mention that they charge $10 a gallon to fill the tank if you don't return it full? Surprisingly horrible service. Called ahead and talked to a very accommodating manager, who assured me they would have a SUV available when I arrived, but when I showed up at the desk the employee completely ignored my mentioning I had talked to the manager. After 10 minutes of puzzled looks at her computer and paperwork she then handed over keys to a Passat. When I repeated I reserved/needed a SUV she mumbled incoherently for a few minutes, disappeared, reappeared, continued mumbling incoherently until I asked her to speak up. Long story short, had to wait 45 minutes for a dirty, smelly, clunky SUV that had all sorts of warning lights going off and shook noticeably at highway speeds. After dropping it off (after hours) repeated calls to this office to email my receipt have promised everything but delivered nothing. My advice: avoid this rental spot! read more

I travel frequently, and this was the WORST customer service I have ever received. Do not rent from Dollar in McAllen UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. When I called to confirm my reservation with them (made several weeks in advance), the customer service representative at the desk told me they didn't have a car for me and laughed when I inquired why. I immediately went to Kayak, where it said they had several cars available, and booked ANOTHER car with them. When I showed up at the desk, with two valid reservations at this point, the man again told me they had no cars for me and couldn't care less that I had a reservation. I asked for his name and his supervisor's name, which he refused to give me. The Avis representatives next door helpfully told me that they had a car I could rent and that they were interested in my business since this man was not. I again asked for his contact information to complain and he again refused, saying I could call the 1800 number, but that they wouldn't do anything for me. I told him this wasn't over and I planned on following up. At this point, he HIT THE PANIC BUTTON under his desk and told the airport police that I had threatened him and his security. They warned him that this was a misuse of the panic button and forced him to give me contact information for his supervisor. I'm not sure how to express how horrible/rude/condescending this man was. Spare yourself and stay as far away from Dollar as possible. read more

Rented auto online. They did not show it at desk. After dealing with a not friendly woman agent, got the vehicle keys and when I tried starting the vehicle, it was dead, would not turn over. When I trudged back to rental desk in airport, I was met with disdain and told to sit down and wait, still no car. Terrible service! read more

If it were left up to me, I would not even give them one star!! The customer service sucks here. I was very unhappy with this experience. Clerk, in my opinion was rude, unconcerned and assigned me a car that had apparently been wrecked. The emblem was missing off the front of the car, the passenger side back door was discolored with obvious signs of repair and the trunk had standing water in the compartment for the spare tire. I took that one back and assigned me another one that had a bad pull to the right. I was delayed 3 hours from my trip having to go back and forth to the airport. Makes no sense what so ever. read more
