Since its considered an airport location you can drop off the rental anytime even if they are closed for the day. Although, you can only pick up your car when they are open of course. Gave me a car to drive 400 miles one way, with expired tags. I called them 200 miles into the journey, and they said that I could not return it to another shop as they were an affiliate and not a full Budget. If I did they would charge me 200 dollars. So I was left driving 4 days with an expired inspection. Does this sound right? I will no longer use Budget. read more

Budget is located on Hwy. 83, in between Bicentennial and Main St., less than a mile from the McAllen Miller Airport. They offer free shuttle service to and from the airport. OK, it wasn't me renting the car, but my son. But I accompanied him when he rented it and when he returned it. I have rented quite a few cars from several different companies, and I was impressed with the staff and their friendly, efficient and superior service. Right now there is construction traffic on the portion of Hwy. 83 directly in front of the car rental agency. So it can be tricky getting in and out at high traffic hours for the time being. Hopefully that will be finished soon! Another plus from Budget is that they are still open till 9 PM whereas the rental places at the airport are closing up at 6. It also helps that their prices are competitive. For a last minute car rental, they had the best prices in town. The car was clean, virtually new, and everything it was supposed to be. My son was very happy with it on his whirlwind trip to north Texas and back. Highly recommended. read more

I would give this a 0 star if I could. They are not located at the airport, so it's already a problem trying to get to them. Also their hours are terrible. Good luck getting a car if your flight arrives later than 7pm on a Monday or 5pm on a Tuesday/ Wednesday. Also when I called the next day to try to find a time to get my car the person I spoke to was very rude and not helpful. Made my Budget reservation in Jan 2024. Pick up and drop off locations were listed as McAllen Miller International Airport. Today May 3rd, the day before I travel to McAllen, I get a call from the woman (Marie) working the Budget desk in McAllen and she was calling me to inform me that the business office would be closed at 1pm the day(May 4th) I'm arriving and I'ld have to be there before that time. My flight doesn't arrive until 1:20pm. She said nobody would be around that late to help. I find it amazing that I can plan my travels over 100 days before my actual travel and my reservation is reviewed by the McAllen branch of Budget less than 24 hours before leading to this mess. Upon pressing Marie that I find it hard to believe the airport location would be closed at 1pm she remarked we say we are the airport location but we are actually OFF-SITE!! What?? My reservation form shows they are at the McAllen International Airport. I asked to have her boss (Angie) call me and she said it's her weekend off and she wouldn't bother her. Told her to cancel my reservation to which she said to call corporate . I ultimately got my reservation canceled but reimbursement takes 7-10 business days. Worst rental experience in my life. Been renting vehicles for the past 30 years and I will never go back here again. They quoted me a price of 76.00 for two days. Car was retuned on time with full tank of gas as required. I received my invoice that I was charged the $76.00. Two days later I get a charge of 436.00 on my card from budget. I went to complain and received no help from the female employee at the location. She stated that the charges were for clean up fees for stains and cigarette burns on the seat. I don't even smoke. I went alone on this trip and they claimed stains were in passenger side and rear seat. No one even sat there. Told lady I wanted to dispute the charges and she told me do what you gotta do. She seemed upset and bothered that i even walked into the business. Horrible customer service. Contacted my credit card company to cancel the charges and making a complain at their district office along with the better business bureau. Do not rent from here! Crooks and thieves!!!! This is a company that prioritizes their profits and personal interest above the safety of their customers. First time and definitely the last I ever rent a vehicle from Budget. On my most recent work trip to Texas with triple digits on the weather, I was given a vehicle with no AC on my way to my lodging realized this and had to drive back 15 miles and exchange the car! Next day on my way to work, I realize the passenger tire is flat. I contact road side assistance who advices to put air in the tire and take it to the nearest office to exchange as their wait time is 4 hours. I follow their lead put air in the tire the car continues to shake as it's more than a "flat" apparently. I arrive at the Budget office speak to the Manager Angie who is more concerned about the gas not being completely full and proceeds to inform me that in order to exchange the vehicle I must take it to get gas or my original contract would be void.... how is the priority here placed on gas vs. safety? Advising me to drive a vehicle that is a hazardous safety? Absolutely ridiculous! I had to reschedule my work meeting and lost a full day dealing with very unhelpful customer service corporate. It is OBVIOUS from reading prior reviews that Mary has had the lap of luxury displaying her arrogance. From what I've read, management has mastered the skill of avoidance and will continue to allow their employees to get away with misguiding customers. Though people may still rent from this establishment (wish I had read the reviews firsthand); I hope I can save someone the headache of dealing with the trash customer service I received. Warning ! Bad business practices. They are charging me for gas and a miscellaneous charge totaling $380!! I never got a receipt or explanation. I had to return the car to a hotel because they are not open Sunday evenings. I did so with a full tank of gas. They called on Wednesday checking if I returned the car because they had not been to the hotel to check yet!! 3 days of not checking on the car. I noticed online that budget charged my card. $638!!! My rental was $200 - so I gave them a call to ask why. They then emailed me a receipt which showed the gas charges and a miscellaneous charge. I called back saying I had a picture of the full gas tank and then stamp and wanted to know why they charged me for gas and what the miscellaneous charge was. They said the misc charge was for a crack in windshield. That was not there when I returned it! Maybe because they left it at a hotel for at least 3 days. Besides, they never called to ask for insurance or even tell me- they just charged whatever they liked! I was able to get corporate to refund gas because I have receipts and the pic of the full tank. But they said that since it is a franchise location they can't help me out with the miscellaneous charges. Mary, who I spoke to at the budget in McAllen, told me the management wasn't there until next week and it would have to wait. This is incompetence at its highest level. We called to confirm Budget would pick us up from the airport earlier in the day as our flight was getting in a little later than planned and we had reservations for a car. When we landed, we tried calling, maybe 10 times. No answer and no shuttle to get us. Long time Budget Fastbreak member, I rent all over the US each year. First time here. I land at around 11 AM during the week, Budget has no counter in the airport but a sign says call the phone number and they will send a shuttle for me. I call, they tell me they have no cars available despite that I reserved this car months earlier. I ask, when will it be ready? She says later this afternoon and says she will call my mobile phone when its ready. Luckily my hotel offered to come get me with their local shuttle that was not typically used for airport runs. At 5:30 PM that evening, still no phone call from Budget for a car that was supposed to be ready over 6 hours before. I call and they say yes we have your car. I get a hotel shuttle ride to pick it up, but the only person working is gone doing something with another car. I wait for quite some time in the parking lot talking to another rental customer that is also waiting a long time for his car. This Budget location is far off site from the airport in a crummy very small lot on the expressway frontage road. The guy finally comes back who is real nice and eventually I get my SUV. Its now an hour later after arriving that I am driving out of the parking lot. The Dodge Journey is not very clean, has higher miles than an average rental and has enough scent squares hidden in various places inside the car to choke out a moose. Smelled like an overwhelmingly strong bathroom disinfectant. No idea what smell they were there to hide. Possibly the car had been heavily smoked in. I fished most of these out and threw them away as the smell was absolutely overpowering. In summary, Budget failed to have my reservation ready even 6 hours after the agreed time, the woman on the phone failed to call me back as I was told and the SUV was not very clean and was heavily scented to cover some type of smell. The guy that actually got me my rental however was very nice and helpful. Lastly, I had to return the car early on a Sunday morning and I was told they did not open until around 11 AM. What??? So instead I was told to leave the vehicle at the Wingate Hotel parking lot and drop the keys at the front desk. Which is very unusual for Budget but it worked out fine and the terminal is only a short walk across the street. Very strange Budget location compared to what I'm used to. Will likely avoid this one next time in McAllen. read more

I am disappointed in the horrific customer service at this Budget Car Rental. I received a call from Minnie and Mary, letting me know they were going to cancel my reservation I made a whole week ago. I locked in a great deal of $30 a day for a 2 week reservation as our car was in the shop after a devastating car accident. They said the van we asked for was not available and they would be cancelling our reservation, even though they had cars available. They said they would NOT be honoring our rate, but that if we wanted to rent a smaller economy size car they would charge us $85 a day. A reservation is a promise and commitment. I commit to paying the price they set forth and picking up the car at a specific time. They promise a car at that rate- sure I get it if the minivan is out and the renter extended it. However, Minnie and Mary did NOTHING to rectify or problem solve. They also threw their management under the bus and said the manager was not in and never works on weekends and could not help me until Monday. When I said I refused to pay $85 a car for a car that was promised to me for $30, they said not to bother coming to the counter and they have a right to refuse service. I expect a call from management if they are people of their word and care about their word and reputation. read more

This rental location is not at the airport although they say they are on their website. It is a mile and a half away by car. There's a shuttle but it doesn't come on regular schedule. I guess I'm just used to having rental car locations attached to the airport or rental car centers with a regular shuttle bus. After waiting and figuring out there's no spot for rental bus shuttles, I called them up. I was already frustrated at that point so I just cancelled the rental reservation. read more

One can get a cab which are lined up ready to take anyone anywhere. For locals it is great. Good deals. And I found the staff friendly. Not impressed at all and definitely won't be renting with them again. The first issue is that they aren't located at the airport, however if you call they will come and get you. The catch is the 18.50 charge for less than 1 mile so you can rent their car. Then there is another 35.00 charge for the title - what is this? The girl at the counter was polite, however she took no ownership of the issues and said she doesn't make the policies and she kept saying you agreed to them when you booked your car. Then to top it off I get in the car and one of the tires is low and it says it right in the dash - and not a little low - it's suppose to be at 36psi and its at 28psi. The building and location are a dive. The car was a mostly crappy Kia and the driver's seat seemed to have a bolt loose. But Minerva, a new staff member at the location, saved the whole experience. We were picked up quickly and efficiently, and she was a total delight. She remembered us on our return trip to the airport, and we'll remember her for a long time as a great part of our trip. Your branch that is affiliated with the McAllen International Airport has THE WORST customer service imaginable. We flew with 2 kids, both under 3 years old, for the first time last week. Our flight was delayed and we called to let them know. The agent said that although they close at 8pm (even though flights come into that airport way later than that) it would not be an issue and to simply call when we landed. We landed at 8:05pm and called from the runway. No answer. We tried for a half hour after we retrieved our luggage. Nothing. Due to the time change and the long travel day, we were all tired and frustrated. Ever travel with a teething 1 year old that is up past their bedtime? Well, add the disappointment of a once reliable company into the mix of emotions and you'll get a sense for what I was feeling. At 8AM sharp the next day, I dutifully called to fulfill my part of the reservation, since I figured Budget must have gone out of their way to put a car aside for me and foregone another's request for a vehicle. The morning agent was even more of a jackass than the one from the previous evening. Telling me that "if you made a reservation through the company's website, you're out of luck. They do not know what cars we have and don't have." He basically told me that my reservation was for not. They didn't have anything for me and I should have called them directly. Is this how you want your company represented? Is this how you treat loyal customers? I hope not. The gentleman at your competitor's kiosk was all too happy to match your quoted price for the vehicle and effectively steal your dime. It was yours to lose, after all. I was dropped off by a friend and picked up my car. They didn't charge airport tax which I thought was cool. Lady at the desk warmed up pretty quickly and was nice. Great car, new-ish car. Returned it and checked it back in just fine. Marina drove me back to the airport and was very, very nice. Part of the reason I wrote the review at all. Never Again will I be reserving with Budget let alone their McAllen branch!! Listed for pick up at MFE but located off premises, apparently you call a number and they send a shuttle, should have been the first sign everything was going to go downhill.That was not explained in the reservation. Upon entering their dilapidated lobby there was already an existing client that was being handled, and the guy working was all over the place, lost confused and kept blaming some dude that was there prior shift. Waited patiently for 30 minutes and when it was my turn, no apology or acknowledgement just indifferent, he proceeds to tell me the minivan that I reserved just got back and it needs to be cleaned, vacumed and only has less than half a tank of has. He then ask for 2 utility Bill's and proof of insurance. I provide him with insurance, my ID and credit card and try to explain that I'm here to pick up a "confirmed reservation" and all I was asked to bring with my was a valid credit card and ID. The guy said "oh this our policy and to take it up with management". Its 9pm 30minutes past my pickup time because of their fault, where am I supposed to go find utility receipts this late ? He didn't care for reasoning either, after spending an hour on my phone trying to come up with 2 utility bills from my phone he proceeded to tell me that the utility bill I have provided are NOT to his satisfaction and was denied rental. So not only did I not get my rental, had to cancel my trip since we had 7 passengers and none of the other rental companies had a large suv or vans, lost money to hotels that we had reserved since the hotels were non refundable rates. The guy refused to give me his last name, this is licensed and run by Payne dealership group which explains a lot. I contacted budget corporate and even they were shocked to hear that I was asked for these unnecessary documentation and they explained that they do not enforce or have these policies in place.
