We popped into Primark and the first thing I saw were their PRIDE T-shirts. Turns out Pride was the following weekend (Well one of the pride parades, the free one. The corporate one is in a few weeks.) I took a look at it and knew I had to buy several items. Their shirts were well made, I ended up buying a couple for me, including a half shirt, a rainbow shirt and a black shirt with rainbow side stripes that has PRIDE embroidered over the heart. When I went to pay, the line down stairs was unforgivably long and my foot wasn't having it, so I went up the escalator to find the 2nd floor cash wrap where the line was short. I was so happy with my purchase, I came back the day after the pride parade and bought 4 more shirts for friends. I will share the love. read more

The prices you see in here are sometimes beyond a joke. Even in the men's section you could buy a whole outfit for about twenty quid, and a suit for not much more. Obviously at the price you pay the clothes aren't of quite the highest quality, but there's a lot worse out there. The homewear section is probably the best of the lot, with bed linen, towels etc at prices cheaper than the Barras, and not full of holes. With prudency being the key word these days Primark is mobbed all the time and their clientele seems to include demographics that wouldn't have come within a mile of the place just a few years ago. Due to it being always rammed, it can be an even more stressful experience than the sweatshops where the clothes are made. read more

I occasionally make the mistake of thinking "I need new work trousers so I'll nip in here and get a cheapy pair". I never fail to leave without feeling utterly depressed. From the moment you enter you are hit by a barrage of (predominantly) women clawing, pointing, waddling around trying to find their next £1.50 purchase. I try to keep my eyes focused and move through this wave of fake tan as quick as possible. Getting to the second floor men's department you have to absurdly walk past the women's lingerie section and when you do get to the menswear bit, the clothes on display have, I can only assume, been designed with an overgrown neon gnome in mind. It's utterly ridiculous. When did the young male population of Scotland submit to this horrific High School Musical/Glee version of reality where everyone dresses like a backing dancer from an 80s version of Top of the Pops? When you finally are able to pick out a pair of kecks, you will be hit with a queue longer than the toilet line at Glastonbury and a sour faced cashier who has resigned themselves to misery in order to pay the bills during their student life. When the Mrs had to spend the night in the hospital after a wee 'I'm sure it's nothings, but let's keep you in for 24hrs' thing with spawn/2, I was sent with pennies in hand to purchase PJs, pants and other lady type stuff from the nearest/cheapest lady-type-stuff emporium. Now these kinda places usually give me mild to medium level heart palpitations at the best of times, but given that my time of shopping was Saturday... 3pm, with toddler in hand, I was sure i might actually die. Like a cheaply stitched together maze of fake baked/hair, extension-ed, shit tattooed, shaven headed consumers, this is my hell. It's busy. It's full of shiny things (cue small child picking up everything) and filled with the kinda people who stare at you with disgust and distrust as you fluster around the ladies pants section looking for something that doesn't say something like 'slut bunny' and does cover more than a midges arse. I am the Duchess of Primark! Ha ha! Wow. What a super title. One to write home about for sure. I love Primark and I have done ever since I first stepped my tippy toes into Penney's, Primark's Irish sister store, whilst on holiday in Dublin many years ago. I longed for them to open one in Glasgow and eventually they did..although inbetween that time (or The Darks Ages as I call them) I had to make do with the odd (and sometimes cheeky) visit to Primark in that place they call England. I would shop with pure glee in the Norwich branch (and once also, whilst on a 'business trip', the Manchester store) until they decided to land on our Scottish soil. Praise be! Mucho cheapness galore! Now some, nae, LOTS of people regard Primark as a very 'throwaway fashion' shop. Now, if anyone knows me at all they will know that I don't do 'throwaway fashion', the mere mention of anything such as clothes being 'throwaway' I gasp in horror. Nothing should be 'throwaway' unless it is designed for that sole purpose, such as toilet roll or a bin bag. Now some hilarious snobby folks out there may argue 'Well, you may as well be wearing a bin bag if you shop in Primark!...' Ha ha. Do you see me laughing. No. So shut up. If you LIKE to pay £100 for a t-shirt or £200 for a pair of pre-ripped jeans then by all means go ahead, I ain't gonna stop you. I just think maybe you've obviously got more money than sense OR you are Sean 'Diddy Ride' Combs. FACT. I have dresses that I bought about 8 years ago from P'mark and they are still intact and not falling to pieces as some people will have you believe. Don't get me wrong, not all of their wears are long-lasting pieces that will make their way in to the future Vintage shops of 2178 BUT for clothes that you're going to wear & want to wear whilst you still like them/can they're absolutely fine. A few common complaints I usually hear: Not as cheap as they used to be ~ But damn! They're still the cheapest out there! 'It's always so messy!' ~ That's because many items are piled up & not on hangers and lots of people are ignorant t*ssers and think it's okay to pick up a pair of jeans and go '£2 for a pair of jeans!?! I'm not not paying that!' *throws jeans on floor* (I actually stole that line from a VERY funny Tom Stade joke - if you haven't seen it YouTube it!) Long queues at the tills ~ So be a decent & patient human being for once and stand in line & wait. You WILL get served. Don't worry. Unhelpful staff ~ They're probably on not much above minimum wage, not that this is an excuse but I don't find their staff to be any more unhelpful than any other clothes shop in town. I LIKE that they don't follow me around asking 'Can I help you!?' a million feckin' times. 'I will see loads of other people wearing the same item as me!' ~ This can happen if you shop in any modern clothes store. It's not unique to Primark. If you want true uniqueness shop vintage or handmade. 'They use 3rd world countries/children to make their clothes!' ~ This is not true; P'mark are part of the Associated British Foods company & as such share their core values which are: 'taking care of our people, being good neighbours, and fostering ethical business relationship.' Also they make sure their workers are looked after. Also on the same note I think you will find most high street retailers use factories in the same countries as P'mark. So whether you shop in the Gap, Top Shop or P'mark there is no difference, in fact after the press hounding P'mark got a couple of years ago I would say P'mark are probably on top for stamping out unethical production of clothing in poorer countries. Now even if you're not a fan of their 'fashion' pieces P'mark are great for basics & nightwear. I know lots of folk come here purely for the vest tops/t-shirts & pyjamas. Personally I like everything they sell here apart from their knickers ~ they're not designed for ladies with even slightly larger than minute bum-bums. Hmph. Nae bother though, I can get big bummed lady panties elsewhere, yay! So, Primark - not for the faint hearted (especially on a Saturday or Sunday! Crowd rage! The Argyle Street branch is the better of the two in town - bigger selection, therefore, better. It's a given that the quality of clothes you'll find here isn't the best, they won't last forever, but I went in a few weeks ago, got a pair of tweeds, some boots, a cardigan and some jammies - and it only came to £40. It's a no frills approach to fashion and convenience clothing that Primark does so well, and for that, I return fairly regularly to get odds and ends. read more

theres a rule of thumb I employ whilst in Primark - would I buy it for double the price elsewhere? If the answer is yes, then go go go! If I am only buying it because it is so cheap then its just a false economy. This rule has served me well and get just as many compliments on my Primark clothes as I do as those bought from Zara et al. Primark itself stops me from buying things I do not love, it takes so long to queue to buy the sodding things that unless I'm in love with it or need it, back on the rack it goes. The clothes will not last you a lifetime, you may go to your local and find someone in the same outfit as you and you do not want to linger too long on how it is made, but if you are prepared for all that then lets all wallow in our fast fashion together. Primark seems to have become a staple of the bargain hunters and is the champion of the 'disposable fashion' trend. This is largely because of the sometimes questionably low price of their stock, and the long-term structural integrity of many of their fabrics. For those who are unaware, Primark have been in and out of the news for ethical violations and have breached their own code of ethics before. They were also one of the companies involved in the Rana Plaza disaster, but to be fair to them they are the company leading in the provision of long-term compensation for victims. If you're interested in Primark's ethical score, Ethical Consumer rates them 3 out of 20. I'm a fair trade girl as a rule, but I'm also on a tight budget and sometimes I need knickers and socks! So I should be clear that where I can afford to wait for better sourced clothing, I do. My rating is based on service, quality of products, and store layout leaving out the ethics because many High Street chains are guilty of the same. I did feel the need to mention it in my review because a company's transparency is important to me as a consumer and I think others feel the same. This store is one of two city centre locations, and this one is better situated. I would say that this bigger than the one on Sauchiehall Street, but the footprint is so different that it is sometimes hard to tell. This one does have three floors, so I would give it the edge in the size department. It's sometimes hard to keep track of where each department is in this store, as it is shuffled about often. I like to get in and out as soon as possible after I have what I need, and this makes that very difficult indeed. The staff are generally pretty efficient, especially given the amout of foot traffic and the number of people who attack the clothes displays leaving naught but chaos in their wake. You can sometimes wait a while in line, but again that is due to customer numbers. The clothes because of their low price were never meant to be durable, but it is extremely irritating to see something start to get holes in it after a couple of washes. This is mostly their light cotton clothes, but very occasionally it happens with others. Now my bugbear with many clothes shops. Anything above a ladies size 14 is an utter PAIN to get. Although Primark does supply up to size 22 (I believe, if not it's 20), they don't stock nearly enough of those sizes so they vanish quickly. Size 16 is always the first to vanish (sometimes on the first day of stocking a new item) because it is the UK average now. They need to make sure more of these are available to their customers or they lose them to other shops. All in it's an OK shop, typical of the High Street if a lot cheaper. But there are better out there. read more

Primark is a place where I can easily squander £30 in the blink of an eye, and walk away with a bag full of goodies that more than satisfies by need to shop and quest for a bargain. Absolutely one of the best places to pick up all of the essentials, including marvellously thick and stretchy tights, cheap and cheerful shoes, make up for 50p and knickers for a quid! My most recent purchase from this particularly big branch was a lovely little blusher stick for only fifty pennies. Their ever increasing men's department is pretty good too, selling plimsolls for just £2 and some decent Topman-alike shirts and tshirts for a pretty penny indeed. Primark is hell on earth. Seriously, I have never been in a shop that is so consistently uber busy. That said, it's cheap, cheerful and the quality of the clothes is pretty good nowadays. The ground and about 2/3 of the 1st floor is reserved for the ladies. Guys things are crammed into the remaining 1/3 on the 1st floor. Because clearly we don't need clothes. Great shop with really cheap and cheerful stuff. As you walk in you might be forgiven for thinking its a ladies shop as the ground floor and most of the second is all girls. However up near the back i found what i was looking for! I was buying a mens black suit for halloween and as im a big guy i couldnt find a jacket that fit across the shoulders, cue Kath an amazing wee worker for this store. She went up and down the stairs and into the warehouse twice for me to find different sizes and styles and also explained what the labels meant and the different style of clothes whilst suggesting possible accompaniements to my ensemble. Got to teh till and it was mega busy but the call went out and operators turned up and the queue was down in no time. Kath gave me a wee survey to fill in which i did as it helps to give brilliant staff feedback so hopefully it helps her or she gets a wee something. All in all my shopping experience was great, quick and very friendly, would efinetely go back here! read more

Primark, or prada mark as those who think shopping in Primark in glamorous call it, is a necessary evil living in the UK. It's probably the cheapest department store you can find, but it's handy when you're needing clothes for painting a house or something of that ilk. There's a Primark in Hamilton where I live, so I'm very rarely ever in this one, but on the occasions I have been in they've not been particularly pleasant ones. I think it's some sort of unwritten rule that Primark workers are not allowed to be friendly, helpful or smiling - because that's exactly what you get. The shop is huge, but unfortunately so are a lot of the customers and you end up getting trampled on in their crazy stampedes. If you can avoid going to this Primark, I would. read more

The introduction of Dublin's Penneys to the UK market had ramifications which rippled throughout the clothing industry. Later named Primark, the store's unique selling point was its incredible value for money, with knickers and accessories as cheap as £1, tops £3 and jeans £8. Unlike other discount stores, the clothes were actually fashionable. British shoppers flocked in droves as Vogue used its 2005 £12 military jacket in its magazine spread, claiming it was as good as any version on the catwalk. However, like all fairytales, there had to be a twist. A 2008 BBC investigative documentary entitled "The Devil Wears Primark" exposed child labour in three of India's sub garment factories subcontracted by the chain. Viewers were appalled at the sight of children sewing gold sequins on that season's must have gold bolero. Primark halted all business with said suppliers, claiming they would never have knowingly permitted such activities. They also claimed the clothes in the stores are cheap because they are made with simple designs and fabrics, in only the most popular sizes and are bought in huge bulks and varieties with no money spent on advertising. Judging the crowds Glasgow's Argyle Street store attracts, this explanation seems reasonable enough. Or perhaps the customers just don't care about working practices in third world countries as they feast their eyes upon three floors of v neck jumpers, stone wash jeans and turquoise pea coats, not to mention a rail of direct copies of the dress Cheryl Cole wore on The X Factor a few weeks ago, all for under fifteen pounds. Primark arrived in Argyle Street in 2005 following the success of its smaller Sauchiehall Street store. It offers womenswears, meanswear, childrenswears, accessories and a small homes section. Unlike other fashion retailers, the staff wear a plain black shirt and black trousers instead of acting as a clothes horse for the shop's latest deliveries. Customers are extremely unlikely to receive a personal shopping experience as the staff are more concerned with keeping the till queues down and getting everyone into the fitting room as quickly as possible (if you want to try something in a smaller size you will be getting it yourself). As is life, you get what you pay for, so a handy tip is to buy everything at least one size larger than you usually wear. Don't be surprised if a 40 degree wash results in a slightly shrunken t shirt or bobbly jumper. Based directly across the road from Glasgow's flagship Topshop store, the rival chain, along with every other fashion retailer, has seen its market share suffer as Primark's fairytale rise continues. During my last visit here I queued with two middle-aged women who spent five minutes informing a fairly gormless student in front that the stench coming from his attire was, and I quote, "giving them the boak". I guess that sums this place up - these days it attracts anyone and everyone, from the bohemian students to the scarily disconcerting. And it's no wonder. Primark prices are astoundingly cheap for relatively good stuff. A suit will set you back little over twenty quid, while t-shirts vary from a quid to a tenner. Recently when visiting I had to purchase a small pair of flat shoes - five quid, and they're absolutely fine. I agree with my fellow Yelper's assertion that the homeware department is where Primark really shines. While the clothing has a tendency to fall apart after a few months, things like towels and linen are genuinely decent and much cheaper than you would expect to pay elsewhere. read more

Visiting from the USA, I was so excited to stop in at my first Primark! It was pretty decent in terms of having a variety of sizes of everything available. Took a tip from another Yelper and showed up close to opening time and it was definitely worth it to avoid the congestion of people that showed up as I was leaving. A little disappointed there weren't more Scottish/UK related items that I could purchase as souvenir gifts. Prices were great compared to competitors. Popped into Primark to get a few essentials and I have to say, I have a love/hate relationship with this store. It's on a prime location on Argyle Street which is ideal if you're having a shopping day! Love: It's large and there's a huge selection of items (clothes, shoes, accessories, pyjamas, beauty products etc) that are well laid out. The store is easy to navigate, spacious changing rooms and a large till desks on each floor so even the largest queues don't usually last that long. Hate: How busy it can get! When it's ridiculously crowded, it can be a nightmare to try and walk around, I just lose patience and leave. At really busy times, the store can become untidy as people just pick up and throw down items (staff try to keep ontop of it but I would struggle to so I can sympathise!). Also, double check the size of everything you pick up, the size on the hanger never seems to matches the actual size of the garment! Overall, I am a fan of Primark. I don't expect their items to last forever (you'd be crazy to, they are so cheap!) but if you're looking for a few essentials to last a couple of months or so...it's a good place to shop! read more

i adore primark!! it has everything you need!! Ground floor is ALL womenswear, then upstairs is menswear, shoes, bags and accessories AND underwear and nightwear!! Then upstairs AGAIN is homeware and kids!! Its neverending in this place. Make sure to pick up your basket at the door!! this branch is great but there are far too few staff on the tills and too many taking up aisle space on the shop floor. The largest Primark shop in Glasgow still with the cheapest bargains and usual awful customer service. Although not nearly as bad as the Sauchiehall Store in Glasgow so saying something! Is very well and neatly laid out so you don't feel as though you are in a jumble sale as in some Primark stores so well worth a visit. The biggest problems with Primark are 1 Lack of appropriate sizes for people with LONG legs, a butt and a bust. They do not have LONG LEG trouser length but they're more than happy to cater for petite. 2 The staff - There are never enough of them and the ones who are there are RUDE, DISORGANISED, DISMISSIVE, UNHELPFUL and highly UNPROFESSIONAL 3 The general layout of the store 4 The length of the lines at the tills vs the number of tills open. I hate clothes shopping with a passion; this would only change if I had a windfall and a couple of hours to wander around independent shops with a retro/vintage theme. I had a need for a plain black, long sleeved formal shirt that could be worn with a tie. I rarely wear men's clothing so had no idea what size I was. Having tried two shops already and discovering a) which collar size was definitely too small for me; b) which size was definitely too big for me; c) short sleeved shirts are far easier to find than long sleeved shirts; d) finding a long sleeved black shirt in women's sections is impossible; e) shirts tend to be jumbled up in no order of sleeve lengths or fits (regular or slim); and f) men's shirts have far too much packaging, I was beginning to lose the plot. The last point being particularly annoying when I hate trying on clothes in fitting rooms more than the actual shopping and walking round and round in circles trying to find what I've gone in for. I bought one 'not too small, not too big, that'll do' shirt in another budget department store and they only had one in the size I kind of fitted (but would have preferred a 1/2 size smaller but they didn't have that at all) then I went to Primark to try to find a second shirt to buy. So many shirts! Still with packaging but not actually in a wrapper! And when I took it to the fitting room they had sample sizes on hangers so you didn't need to take the packaging from the shirts to try them them on! Probably the best Primark in town, set over two floors and housing womens, mens and kids clothes. It doesn't just cater in clothing though, you can find bags, jewellery, undies, shoes, make-up, luggage and gift wrap/cards. Everything you could need on a budget under one roof. Let's not get carried away here, you kind of get what you pay for, however the value in here is second to none. I often pop in here before a last minute night out and grab a cute wee skirt or vest for under a tenner. Holiday time equals Primark time, and you can fill up your case with an array of shorts, bikinis and sandals for a fraction of the price than if you went to Topshop or even New Look. The stuff is getting more and more stylish, which means you can easily pick up an outfit for under £20, sometimes with shoes included. The accessories are great and if you're like me, you buy jewellery all the time to match every outfit you have. I recently got a huge oval black stone ring for just £1, and a gold chunky battered bangle for the same. It's really impressive. You can't beat a Primark bra either, the ones with inserted gel pads are awesome and cost only £4. It would be easy to spend a pay cheque in here! Ethics aside, Primark is a rediculously cheap place for clothes and homeware. It's handy for all sorts of reasons. Bend over and rip your trousers? Jump into primark. Did the rain just come pouring out of nowhere? Grab a coat in here for a fiver. I wouldn't buy my normal day to day clothes in here. Almost everyone i know swears by Primark for nice cheap clothes, everytime I ask friends where they bought their nice new outfit they always say Primark! Me? I'm not so convinced that its value for money, I've bought clothes from here before and after about 3 washes the threads are coming out and they are out of shape or discoloured, I dont think this is good value at all not matter what the price. Anytime I go into this store, there are clothes lying all over the floor its as though people dont care about picking things up just because its cheap! I can never find any of the nice clothes that my friends can, perhaps this has something to do with me not having any patience for how crowded the shop always it though! This store is huge and very very busy. It is so cheap that they are virtually giving the stuff away. If you are a Primark fan then you will love this store as is really big with loads of stock. I personally am not a fan as I would rather pay a bit extra for better quality stuff and hate the pushing and shoving and hanging about waiting to get served that seems to go hand in hand when shopping at Primark. There always seems to be clothes lying everywhere as people drop things and don't bother picking them up and staff can't keep up. Primark has very quickly become a landmark store in Glasgow. It is always busy, and usually has a parade of people queuing to buy. I am a bit ambivalent about it. Of course it is staggeringly cheap. If you are looking for some summer tops or cheap knickers then it is hard to beat. As an experience though it is not always satisfactory. A lot of the stuff looks cheap, and it certainly doesn't last for long. The lighting is too bright, so that makes the stuff look even worse than it is. Also, it is nearly always really messy.
