Primark (shop)
Every time I see people coming out of Primark with huge bags in both hands not being able to walk even, I wish to do exactly like them. I just couldn't do it. I'm not trying to say here that I'm too proud to buy from Primark, but, for me, not everything can be bought from this shop.
"Primark is a retail group in the value sector and operates a total of 181 stores in Ireland (where it trades under the Penneys brand), Spain and the UK. Primark employs in excess of 25,000 people." They claim to offer competitive prices and mainstream market product quality, and they attribute their success partly to the high street locations of their stores.
Their motto is "Look Good Pay Less" for they say they offer the best value and they target "young, fashion-conscious under 35's" offering them the best quality at the best prices. Primark is a member of the ethical trading initiative, and they were awarded 'Town Centre Retailer of the Year' , 'UK Retailer of the Year' , 'Best Value' , 'Best Budget' and 'Best Overall High Street Shop' Awards in 2008 alone.
The other day I needed socks and so I went directly to Primark. I visited TK Maxx previously and looked for socks there. The quality was really good and the price was somewhere between £2 to £5 for the 3 pair pack. In Primark, I found a pack of reduced white cotton Primark Essential socks that contains ten pairs (six sports socks and four trainer socks) for £2. The original price for this pack was £5, which is also a bargain. But what about quality?
This is not the first time I buy socks from Primark; I bought several packs of cotton socks (five pairs for £2). I cannot say that it's a terrific quality; it is average or even below average, but it does last long enough for socks. Who wants to keep their socks forever? I'm sure the ones in TK Maxx are much better, but I buy new socks every couple of months anyway.
I bought several cotton and wool tops from Primark as well; the price can be as low as £1.50 for cotton sleeveless tops to £8 or £10. All the tops I bought were what I call normal; mostly casual and one colour only. This is what you find in Primark in most cases, so don't expect to find something very stylish or fashionable. There is an attempt at making new and different styles, but you have to be careful for sometimes they end up being showy and vulgar.
The reason why I could not buy so many things from Primark is that, for me, certain things shouldn't be bought from this shop. For example, although they are cheap (£8-£12) denim trousers don't look good in Primark. Moreover, I don't think I will ever buy shoes from there, although the slipper boots look nice. Buying the cheap foldable umbrellas is not an option for me at all; I never trust them.
Still, everything is available in Primark: clothes for men, women and children, shoes, accessories, homeware and even some makeup. Large bags are provided so that you carry your stuff around till you reach the fitting rooms. Normally, there's a queue to the fitting rooms which are generally spacious, and you can take eight items with you at a time.
When it is not very crowded, you see girls sitting in the fitting rooms just making phone calls. When it is crowded in the shop, things become noisy and crazy. As you try to find your way in the huge shop, you see members of staff rearranging the clothes which the customers throw all over all the time. They seem to be nice and helpful, yet the cashiers appear to be somewhat stressed probably because the number of buyers is incredible.
The queue to the cashiers is long especially in the morning. Fortunately, when you finally make it to the cashier, you don't have to pay for the carrier bags you get. You are given plastic bags of various sizes or nice, large paper bags depending on what you buy, for free.
Is it recommended? I don't think that it's just for students as some people think; this shop is for any of you if you cannot afford to buy from the more expensive stores at a certain time of your life, or even if your finances are good but you don't want to spend much money for a certain item like socks or travel clothes, etc. Finding your way in the huge store can be a little difficult, and finding the right item is not easy. In every five items you consider, you might end up buying one or none. If you are lucky enough to find items that suit you, you will end up buying three items for the price of one item from Next for example. And, let's admit it, finding bargains feels good.
