Primal Grounds BJJ is an amazing Jiu Jitsu spot located in the heart of downtown Roseville. Dom and Andre are great people and I love what they are doing with the place. What sets them apart from other BJJ gyms especially in the Roseville area is their focus on Nogi version of Jiu Jitsu (without the Gi). The culture and atmosphere is amazing, the people are very friendly. Just about every weekend there is a UFC watch party at the gym and Dominic's parents have been known to bring some amazing Italian food on special occasions. They do have BBQs and get togethers quote a bit. A great place to make some new friends. You'll be able to work with some high level martial artists as well as up and comers. If you're a beginner -- this gym is great to teach you the fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu. If you're a hardcore nogi athlete with goals and aspirations this is the perfect spot to maximize the amount of Nogi rolls and to find like minded training partners that will help you up your game. They offer classes in the morning, noon, and evenings and even have a Kids program. Very impressive for a gym that's just starting out. Overall I couldn't be happier to be part of Primal Grounds BJJ.

Tu&Th @5p, beginner no gi BJJ class.

We're regulars at the 5:30 AM Zombie Class -- yes, it's early, but 100% worth it! The atmosphere here is welcoming, supportive, and full of positive energy. Everyone we've trained with has been incredibly patient, caring, and fun to roll with. The instructors are fantastic across the board -- Keith goes above and beyond, dedicating a ton of his personal time to help us grow. David is calm, patient, and excellent at breaking things down, and I've really appreciated Alex's wisdom and thoughtful insights as well. Whether you're a complete beginner or experienced practitioner, this is one of the best jiu-jitsu studios in town. I highly recommend dropping in and becoming part of the Infinite family!

However, the details of instruction and the friendliness of everyone at Infinite, from the owner to beginners, is unmatched. Gustavo (owner/instructor) continues to compete and master his own craft while stressing the importance of technique over brute force to students. I appreciate this approach as an older practitioner, especially after training overseas at an MMA gym which had the opposite mentality. Gustavo is also supportive of kids and adults who want to compete and does his best to be mat-side with them at tournaments. Regarding the kids classes, I also appreciate the few minutes he spends a with them at the beginning of class talking about their day and trying to connect BJJ lessons to proper behavior off the mat.

Update: Darren did reach out and his sincerity was felt. I…read morecan tell coach Darren is a great coach but doesn't have enough of him to go around. I hope he finds another coach as passionate as him who can help assist him in his class so it can shine to its brightest. ----------------- We wanted our daughter (6 years old) to start doing a self defense class and was recommended jujitsu. We were trying places out that were under our charter. We called this place and left a message as it says to do. Coach Darren called us back a couple days later and was very kind and accommodating. We came into his class and he was kind enough to loan us a pink GI :). Upon starting the class it was similar as the last one we tried out the week prior ( my daughter loved the last class we tried out at Cassio Jujitsu in Carmichael but we found out they do not accept our school funds so we tried this place). There was probably 14 kids in this class maybe a few more. There was only 1 Darren. They began to do drills like "knee to the gut" which my daughter was paired with a similarly sized kid but much more advanced and I watched as they were supposed to be only doing 6 to each other but my daughters pal did 19 I counted. My daughter had a brave face but I would see she was uncomfortable. I should have stood up and said something because that's my job and I will next time something like this happens. Darren was to busy to be sure the new kids in his class where being treated properly. She was complaining of her belly pain and they moved on to shoving each other down. He didn't explain how to properly fall before he paired my daughter with a boy similar size but he pushed her so hard in the stomach. She began to cry and pushed him back. Coach finally took noticed and told her to go get water and calm down. She drank one drink and puked in my hands. I can tell he is an excellent coach and I understand this might be the nature of martial arts but the other place did a much better job and had two coaches to keep an eye on each child match to be sure each child knew what was being taught. I felt like she was met with a sink or swim coach. I felt like his class was to big for him to properly monitor the class. And I fell dropped as he never checked in on us or even helped us understand how to help my daughter to either learn the techniques or help us know what we should have done. I hope when he reads this and when anyone reads this it is to understand my situation and not to say anything bad on Darrin. The other parents in that class seemed to really love that class and love Darrin's approach. I can tell coach Darrin is a great coach but I do think he dropped the ball with our kid and unfortunately she is terrified to ever go back.

If you are looking for a place that goes beyond just physical techniques, this is it. Kovar's focuses heavily on building character and self-discipline. Over the past year, we've seen a massive boost in our child's confidence, which has translated into how they carry themselves outside of the dojo. One of the most valuable aspects of the program is the emphasis on anti-bullying. The instructors don't just teach kids how to protect themselves; they teach them the importance of standing up for others and de-escalating situations with integrity. The teachers are phenomenal--they are patient, encouraging, and truly know how to engage with younger children to keep them focused while having fun. We are so grateful to be part of this community and highly recommend Kovar's to any parent looking to empower their kids!

Marinoble's offers a variety of instruction in different disciplines! We went in and told them exactly what we wanted, and did not want, for the first few months and they were able to accommodate us with everything we needed. We love our instruction here so far, we look forward to going, and are sad to leave. My littlest is sleeping in his Gi uniform right now. Marinoble's offers such a variety of classes it will accommodate any child and adult. The facility is huge! They have five separate "floors" to instruct various classes simultaneously; including a cage, a boxing ring, a knife throwing center. This means parents can work out in their own class while the kids are having fun learning in another part of the gym. They offer MMA, Kickboxing, JuJitsu, Submission Grappling, BOK FU, Weapons Disarming, and traditional Boxing by actively competing trainers at both the amateur and professional level. My only requests would be large fans, please. The room smells of many sweating people. Okay, not major BO or anything, just man sweat. Of course, the women smell wonderful when we sweat [wink, wink] which can only help deodorize it so much! And the some of the equipment could be maintained better, but it's minor stuff, like having enough properly pumped and working speed bags. **So this is what sold me! The prices are reasonable and they offer family discounts off both the enrollment and tuition anywhere from 25% - 50% off. Then the owner, Dave Marinoble, offered free passes good for a few days of classes to try it out. When I asked when the days would begin, the manager, Kim, told me not to worry about it; to take my time sampling the various classes to help make a better decision. No pressure, wonderful. I brought the boys in and they happily welcomed them and gave them semiprivate instruction to catch up with the group. The looks on their faces said it all. The instructors were so happy and fun while they taught, my boys were grinning ear to ear the entire time. When they finished, their first question was, "When can we come back"? Another good sign! Happy, nurturing teachers, great management and the owner is awesome too. He teaches many of the classes. He has more energy than I've seen any person have! Maybe he can lend me some for my "tired parent" days? Instead, they got me working out in the back room and even I had a blast. After the first day, I told Kim, "We're sold! Give us a few more days to choose which classes", which was fine. For every age 5-85 and every skill level. They train active competitors, kids, soccer moms and everyone in between. The gym is female friendly. The variety of classes and times makes it easy to get a butt-kicking workout in every day. The coaching is fantastic! So far I've had Kim and Abrahm, and the boys have had Tiffany? and Dave Marinoble, plus a few others. We've liked them all! **I strongly recommend checking this place out for fitness, self defense training, and competitive sport, for an adult or a child! We're having lots of fun so far. More updates to come....
