I'd rather check out a different free park in the area, like Whitnall.

This park is just one of the many gems that the award winning Waukesha Park and Rec Department has to offer. Nestled along the Fox River and the city's wonderful river walk, this 35 acre park features a formal garden, an amphitheater, lighted and fenced baseball diamond, indoor rec center, event hall, large playground, a bubbling spring, restrooms, bike & boat rentals from High Roller Fun Rentals and tons of parking. On top of all of that, Fiesta Waukesha, Badgerland Water Ski Show, Old Car Club Car Show, Oktoberfest and other events are held here. The eastern playground on a spring day is absolute heaven, as the playground is surrounded by lilacs. I've never experienced such a wonderful scent at a playground before, and you can tell it lifted the spirits of everyone around. The playground has a rubber playing surface, except for one area where there is a sandpit. The equipment shows some age, but is in great shape. The little kids side is pretty basic, but the big kids side is cool as the setup is a bit different. It's very long, and kids can go from one end to the other without stepping on the ground. A huge variety of slides, gliders, steps, rock walls, and more. Plus, there is a bathroom and drinking fountain right next to the playground!!! There is a second playground on the western edge, near the Schuetze Rec Center. This playground also has a rubber playing surface, and is new as of 2015. It is an all accessible playground, and has a transportation theme. This playground is also unique as it is tailored towards little kids rather than big kids, which rarely ever happens. The formal gardens date back to 1928, and features 18 annual flower beds, 6 colorful perennial areas and eleven fragrant rose beds. With 100s of tulips and daffodils, 1,000s of flowering annual plants, and over 150 roses in bloom and countless perennial this place is always beautiful are serene. Note, professional photoshoots require a permit! There are so many more things to talk about here, but really, just go and see for yourself. It's a beautiful park.

Officially you have to have a state park sticker or come prepared with you 5 dollars to drop in little boxes along the trail for a day pass. I've taken the trail from waukesha (trailhead on college ave) almost to the end of the paved portion of the trail in dousman. You can go further to lake mills but its crushed limestone on that part. I can't put my finger on what I liked so much about this trail...the scenery was really pastoral and bucolic and the inclines weren't too bad. Just a really nice place to ride. The whole trip from waukesha to dousman is about 28 miles round trip. Mama Ds coffee etc spot is about 5 or 6 miles past the waukesha trailhead. See you on the trail!

There were plenty of cyclists out but they were all very polite about passing us (a quick "on your left" and a socially distant pass). The trail itself is paved and appears to be beautifully maintained. The views in some areas of the trail are lovely (and other areas a little industrial). If you're looking to get out of the house and maybe enjoy a little nature to boot, this is a great option. Get to it!

I took botany in college so I'm familiar with the most of plants in Wisconsin. So when I have scratching my head with unfamiliar flora, that means something. This time I came to test out the full expanse of the water with my paddle board. I came with my brother who had his kayak and fished. He caught a rainbow trout (and released). We stayed on the water for almost 4 hours - the water was nice and clean and it was busy but not crazy. The beach area was definitely a popular busy zone but most the people were in the designated swimming area versus the open lake. Just a great time and will be back! If looking to grab a spot on the dry land I would recommend arriving before 11am- that's when it started filling up more.

We went cross country skiing with rentals from Nordic Specialists located in the Evergreen Shelter next to the Evergreen lodge. Entry is with a fee or free with your purchase annual WI State parks pass. Not too far from the city, this place has the solitude and nature getaway not too far from the city. Xski rentals were $30 for classic ski that came with shoes poles and skis for two hours. It's also nice in the summer for getting a hike in whether you want a short one or a challenging long hike. There's also an observatory tower you can hike up flights of stairs for a nice view! The evergreen lodge is new and spacious to stay warm during the winter or cool in the shade in the off-winter time.

This place used to be landfill a long time ago and they filled the place up and now it's a park. As a little boy I used to come here a lot. It's a nice and quite little park. There's just a few swings and some sand to play in and of course, there is that kiddy pool for the summer. I probably pee'd in it, haha... Next to the soda machine used to be a pay phone, you know? The one that you put in one finger at a time and turned it in a circular motion. Ah, rotary phones were cool, not! Soda in that machine was 25 cents and they had a machine inside the building that made a cup of chicken broth soup, hot coco or, coffee. Yes, no Starbucks back then. In the summer you can expect to see men dressed up in uniforms playing baseball. You can also play tennis. They have two courts here. Hopefully the nets are new. The most fun is probably during the winter months when snow is on the hill. Take a sled, grease it down with left over lard from Christmas dinner and your in for a joy of a life time. We also learned about the all upcoming presentations and we plan to attend as often as possible. This is a little theater that is so unique and should not be dismissed. The entire nature center and grounds are beautiful, and hiking the woods is always a pleasure. The downside is that dogs are not allowed, but that is understandable since they protect nature as much as possible. Please take a look at their website and do yourself a favor by attending an event or two. It really is a great way to spend an evening or hike for the day. The entire area is 483 acres, and is open at 6:00 am until 10:00 pm. There is no charge for parking or entering the park. Only the events have a fee, and it is not expensive. And everything inside is easily accessible for anyone with mobility issues.
