LOST IN BRIXTON It was an absolute Joke!! We booked a table…read morewhich I got sent and email for, for it not to even be confirmed that we had a table. The lady was nice enough to get us a table even though they were fully booked. What was ridiculous was that we looked on the website which clearly stated you were doing bottomless brunch to find out that they don't even serve brunch which means food. We brushed it off and thought okay £25 for bottomless drinks that's okay we went there to find out that the website is wrong and there is no bottomless brunch. They suggested that we sit and have a drink which is £10-12 for 1 cocktail which is tiny! The security was also sooo rude they were looking down at us like we were trash! I feel that this a lot of false advertisement and they should sort out there website as it's super misleading! WING AND TINGS They were amazing! Super lovely staff, amazing food! Great beer! I will be going back again and again!

Market Row is very small & it consists primarily of food stalls, and it was very unappealing. Brixton Village is a little larger (although not nearly as large as the description had sounded), and it has lots of small restaurants plus a few tiny shops. We ate dinner at one of the restaurants and it was pretty bad (see my separate review).

Persepolis is a hipster restaurant and market offering vegetarian eats and sweets inspired by the…read moreflavors of Iran and the Middle East. Their signature offering is the "Persepolis Feasting Menu," which came with multiple courses to share. There's no set menu and the dishes offered change by the day, so there's always an element of surprise! We were started with ramekins of a sweet potato soup with yogurt, but my favorite course was the meze platter, which came with pasta salad, falafels, sweet potato fritters, pickles, a cottage cheese dip, tahini, and hummus with cheese puffs sticking out! The mezes were served with pita bread slices, which were perfect for eating with the dips. The next three dishes were amazing as well: crispy halloumi with sesame and honey; fattet, or pita chips with spinach, chickpeas, and tahini; and a creative dish of chips, melted cheese, cauliflower, mushrooms, tomato, and onion, all seasoned with a yellow spice mixture. Finally, the last two dishes were pakora, or battered mixed vegetables (onion, cauliflower, pickles) served with saffron and dill aiolis on the side; and a final platter of rice, cucumber/onion/tomato salad, a red kidney bean stew, and a potato stew. While decent, the fried vegetables were on the greasy side, and the stews had an overly sweet flavor, and I was more impressed with the earlier courses. Finally came a colorful platter of dessert, which included ice cream topped with rose syrup; two different types of baklava; a cream-filled cake roll; jalebis; Turkish delight; cookie sandwiches; dates; and sliced strawberries/oranges. Everything we had here was flavorful, delicious, creative, and beautifully-presented, and enjoying the Middle Eastern hospitality was a great experience!

Still my fave veg restaurant, for the tasty food, the huge portion sizes and cheap prices. Yes, you…read moreshould make a reservation and you'll likely still have to wait to be seated, for a server to arrive at your table and for your food to arrive. But even this impatient native New Yorker is more then happy to deal. The avo smoothie is incredibly rich and whilst I thought the rose taste was a bit overpowering at this visit (my husband said it tasted like soap haha), I overall still loved it. My husband's date smoothie on the other hand was sadly underwhelming. My spiced broccoli soup was thick and creamy and full of flavour. I was so stuffed I regretted ordering the fried plaintains and eggs on bread as my main so my husband ended up eating it haha. But as I've ordered this before, I know how great it is. And he agreed, as it's slightly spicy and full of flavour. His main dish sadly again was bland: similar to a stir fry of veg and bread. He did enjoy the sahlep for takeaway though.

I have been wanting to go here for ages and finally managed to last Saturday night. First lesson -…read moredon't go on a Saturday night! It was heaving, and when the tables are so closely packed together as to make you wonder which person is actually your date, it ends up being pretty claustrophobic. Plus there seemed to be an entire rugby team gathered round the table behind us, which made our conversation absolutely impossible. Due to the place being packed out with severely limited room for the wait staff to get to us, we were horribly neglected service-wise. One very nice chap was great for the first ten minutes, but after that we literally had to shout 'excuse me' over several couples when someone got within hearing distance - usually to rush on either without hearing or without wanting to hear. The food was also below par - I did have four very nice oysters to start with, but my lamb wasn't terribly flavourful and the spiced aubergine it was sitting on didn't work for me. My side of Savoy cabbage was cooked in such a way as to mean I had to chew each mouthful for a full minute before I could swallow. My dining companion's Glamorgan sausage to start was alright (nothing special) and they described their asparagus main as "a dish that a meat-eater would invent for a vegetarian without actually trying it". The pudding of cinnamon chocolate parfait was lovely and we ate every scrap. To their credit they took the Savoy cabbage off of the bill, but it was still fairly substantial for the rather uncomfortable and unsatisfying experience we had had. I may go back and try it on a less busy night, just to see if they can function better when not stretched to breaking point.

I'm not entirely sure why this is being called Franklins Pub…read more It does have a pub / bar area at the front and seating outside n the street, and though a good place for a few drinks, nice lager on tap and good wine selection, but the place is really more of a restaurant, I'd be hard pressed to call it a pub. Anyway, it's small and intimate, very much a neighbourhood restaurant. The food is of the St Johns 'nose-to-tail' style so great for carnivores. There will be one vegetarian dish so if it's not to your liking as a veggie then choice will be very limited (though the cheese selection is fab). The quality of the food is why you go though; I've very rarely had anything that wasn't superb from stalwarts like the steak to more adventurous game dishes or sweetbreads. Like anywhere it can have the odd day when a dish has been merely competent and delicious as opposed to the usual excellence. The service is also good and strikes a good balance between formal and friendly. Wine list is excellent, talking of which I marked it £££, but if you're tempted down list from the 3-4 (of each colour) house type wines it will quickly become a ££££ (there's a great Margaux, a steal at £45,half price you'll find it anywhere up town). I've been going for the best part of a decade and it remains not only a local favourite for me but has trumped many a pricier option in town. Definitely worth a try.

As the sun made an unexpected appearance today (spare a thought and prayer for those poor people…read moreflooded out in Wales today in the middle of our alleged summer), I took advantage by walking from Tooting Bec to Tooting Broadway station today, a walk which takes you through an area filled with ethnic food shops and restaurants. I was pleased to see that it's mango season back in Pakistan and India, which means that the ethnic supermarkets and greengrocers' shopfronts fill up with boxes upon boxes of yellow Asian mangos. Beware, the price and quality can vary and quite often, the mangos are over-ripe. These over-ripe ones are fine for putting into desserts (in fact, they may be sweeter and more fragrant for this purpose) but they're too far gone to slice and eat fresh. There's such a wide choice of vendors that you should always insist on feeling and smelling the fruit from the actual box that you're buying and not the box on display. The colour and the wrinkliness of the flesh isn't actually that accurate a test of the ripeness and sweetness of the mango. Instead, use your nose - a ripe mango will smell sweet and it should give slightly under the thumb when you exert a little pressure. The slightly longer honey mangos come from Pakistan and the shorter rounder Alphonso mangos come from India. They're both wonderfully sweet and aromatic. Certainly several notches above the South American mangos you find in the conventional supermarkets Also, this being Tooting, haggle! If you buy a few boxes, you can always secure a discount. Daily Fresh Fruits is a bustling shop with a large selection of fruit and veg from a lot of ethnic backgrounds. They had some nice ripe mangos and I secured a good price from the chap outside. Cold mango is a perfect antidote to a hot day!

A screen replacement should not be difficult but it has been made worse by the chaps at Daily Fresh Foods. Apparently they don't know when staff are coming back from holiday and are just plan rude. Avoid at all costs.
