A very special place…read more The building is unique, the teachers are caring and professional, and the school has a community-like vibe that I simply have never seen in a school before. It is so warm and inviting. The students have a meeting in the morning-with the whole school-and teachers and students are congratulated for their hard work as individuals and groups. This isn't just for those kids with the best grades but for kids who have made great progress or done kind acts as well. Its a very compassionate place. This is a diverse school and allows many opportunities for all kids. The wonderful field trips, extracurriculars, and interesting classes/lessons that are added in can really motivate kids. Learning to make pottery, playing the drums, or performing in school plays can give kids a neat push and help them learn to work towards their goals. The principal and vice principal are wonderful and really involved. They visit the classrooms and the kids know who they are. Students are encouraged to think critically. This is how all schools should be!

This event was full of great vendors wonderful artists and some of the best wine and burton vendors of Kentucky! Everything was free bc of our donation for the ticket purchase! I recorded friendly hellos,, warmed welcomes, and wonderful generosity tonight! All of the bodies were very willing to share information about their business and tell me about great events by have coming up! Some of the more memorable ones include BBC, elk creek vineyards winery, and atria senior living catering. The overall philosophy of the place was akin to 70's free love, communal education. We addressed our teachers by their first names. My English class was held in a room with few tables and no desks. There were sofas and floor cushions everywhere. Most of the teachers were awesome. There were a few boneheads (you know who you are). Martha Ellison and Doug Proctor were a finely tuned educational machine. They churned out many creative, balanced, independent thinkers. Once they were no longer involved with the Brown School, everything seemed to slide downhill. The new regime swung in the direction of traditional education with standardized testing driving the process. It seriously sucked. I was fortunate enough to graduate the year that this regime took power. I was also fortunate enough to reap the benefits of the patient, devoted teachers at the Brown School. Special thanks go to Lois, Karen, and Gaye. They know know why. The dream team of Martha and Doug get five stars. Today, the Brown School hardly pays homage to her roots. So, we'll settle at three stars and call it even.

This is a different kind of school. The students get a say in what/how they learn by picking…read morethemes, being able to move around in class, having the ability to think outside the box, and they learn how to think critically and solve problems with direction rather than being taught to sit down, be quiet, and do exactly as told. They have some choice in how things go and learn in a slightly off-beat way, making this great for kids with attention issues, kids who do not fit into a cookie-cutter mold, and parents who want a less traditional experience. The school has a "whole-child" approach meaning they do not focus solely on academics but also on things like kindness, diversity, proper health, etc. There is no cafeteria so students must bring their own lunch and those lunches are expected to be healthy. Many of the lessons are hands-on, especially in science. The preschool program is really top-notch and results in students learning reading skills and math in a quicker and more efficient way. Class sizes are small and the school itself is quite little. The big downsides are the price and location. Its not conveniently located by much of anything but this allows for a huge lot to play on, learn on, and use for gardening/greenhouses, and cross country running. The school has large windows and does not cover them with blinds so kids cannot see outside--there is more freedom than that here. The tuition is HIGH and this is not a place most can afford which is very unfortunate as so many kids could benefit from it. Of course, much of that tuition goes to the "higher ups" and results in huge salaries and you do get quite a lot of the private/independent school politics here.

He can be around neurotypical kids, he is high functioning although it is difficult for him to do something new. He needs a little extra support and love to start something new like this. Camp is only 3 hours. This is all information that was provided months before camp started. Although I provided all of this information to them, and I have seen him succeed in these environments in the past, they informed me they did not have the staff to assist him. This was very unfortunate and could have been completely avoided if they had reached out before camp. Their sign says everyone is welcome....that just is not the case. If you child needs any help, extra care, or just a little more attention, don't send them here.

Any sort of neurodivergence that is outwardly perceivable WILL be targeted and you will be pressured to conform by administration. Another issue was the extreme lack of diversity. Caucasian is 90% of the student body and staff, which caused feelings of alienation. The one good thing about this school were most of the teachers. Most of them really did or do try (did as in a large portion of staff were fired or resigned due to grievances with administration) but I fear this is not nearly enough to be worth it. I find this school a disgrace to Maria Montessori and an utter mutilation of her teachings.
